We report on simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of the repeating fast radio burst source FRB 180916.J0158+65 using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), Effelsberg, and ...Deep Space Network (DSS-14 and DSS-63) radio telescopes and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. During 33 ks of Chandra observations, we detect no radio bursts in overlapping Effelsberg or Deep Space Network observations and a single burst during CHIME/FRB source transits. We detect no X-ray events in excess of the background during the Chandra observations. These non-detections imply a 5 limit of <5 × 10−10 erg cm−2 for the 0.5-10 keV fluence of prompt emission at the time of the radio burst and 1.3 × 10−9 erg cm−2 at any time during the Chandra observations. Given the host-galaxy redshift of FRB 180916.J0158+65 (z ∼ 0.034), these correspond to energy limits of <1.6 × 1045 erg and <4 × 1045 erg, respectively. We also place a 5 limit of <8 × 10−15 erg s−1 cm−2 on the 0.5-10 keV absorbed flux of a persistent source at the location of FRB 180916.J0158+65. This corresponds to a luminosity limit of <2 × 1040 erg s−1. Using an archival set of radio bursts from FRB 180916.J0158+65, we search for prompt gamma-ray emission in Fermi/GBM data but find no significant gamma-ray bursts, thereby placing a limit of 9 × 10−9 erg cm−2 on the 10-100 keV fluence. We also search Fermi/LAT data for periodic modulation of the gamma-ray brightness at the 16.35 days period of radio burst activity and detect no significant modulation. We compare these deep limits to the predictions of various fast radio burst models, but conclude that similar X-ray constraints on a closer fast radio burst source would be needed to strongly constrain theory.
Abstract
Fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20180916B exhibits a 16.33-day periodicity in its burst activity. It is as of yet unclear what proposed mechanism produces the activity, but polarization ...information is a key diagnostic. Here we report on the polarization properties of 44 bursts from FRB 20180916B detected between 2018 December and 2021 December by CHIME/FRB, the FRB project on the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment. In contrast to previous observations, we find significant variations in the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of FRB 20180916B. Over the 9-month period 2021 April and 2021 December we observe an apparent secular increase in RM of ∼50 rad m
−2
(a fractional change of over 40%) that is accompanied by a possible drift of the emitting band to lower frequencies. This interval displays very little variation in the dispersion measure (ΔDM ≲ 0.8 pc cm
−3
), which indicates that the observed RM evolution is likely produced from coherent changes in the Faraday-active medium’s magnetic field. Burst-to-burst RM variations appear unrelated to the activity cycle phase. The degree of linear polarization of our burst sample (≳80%) is consistent with the negligible depolarization expected for this source in the 400–800 MHz bandpass of CHIME. FRB 20180916B joins other repeating FRBs in displaying substantial RM evolution. This is consistent with the notion that repeater progenitors may be associated with young stellar populations by their preferential occupation of dynamic magnetized environments commonly found in supernova remnants, in pulsar wind nebulae, or near high-mass stellar companions.

The Swift/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) hard X-ray transient monitor provides near real-time coverage of the X-ray sky in the energy range 15-50 keV. The BAT observes 88% of the sky each day with a ...detection sensitivity of 5.3 mCrab for a full-day observation and a time resolution as fine as 64 s. The three main purposes of the monitor are (1) the discovery of new transient X-ray sources, (2) the detection of outbursts or other changes in the flux of known X-ray sources, and (3) the generation of light curves of more than 900 sources spanning over eight years. The primary interface for the BAT transient monitor is a public Web site. Between 2005 February 12 and 2013 April 30, 245 sources have been detected in the monitor, 146 of them persistent and 99 detected only in outburst. Among these sources, 17 were previously unknown and were discovered in the transient monitor. In this paper, we discuss the methodology and the data processing and filtering for the BAT transient monitor and review its sensitivity and exposure.We provide a summary of the source detections and classify them according to the variability of their light curves. Finally, we review all new BAT monitor discoveries. For the new sources that are previously unpublished, we present basic data analysis and interpretations.
Abstract
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) display a confounding variety of burst properties and host-galaxy associations. Repeating FRBs offer insight into the FRB population by enabling spectral, temporal, ...and polarimetric properties to be tracked over time. Here, we report on the polarized observations of 12 repeating sources using multiyear monitoring with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) over 400–800 MHz. We observe significant rotation measure (RM) variations from many sources in our sample, including RM changes of several hundred radians per square meter over month timescales from FRBs 20181119A, 20190303A, and 20190417A, and more modest RM variability (ΔRM ≲ few tens of radians per square meter) from FRBs 20181030A, 20190208A, 20190213B, and 20190117A over equivalent timescales. Several repeaters display a frequency-dependent degree of linear polarization that is consistent with depolarization via scattering. Combining our measurements of RM variations with equivalent constraints on DM variability, we estimate the average line-of-sight magnetic field strength in the local environment of each repeater. In general, repeating FRBs display RM variations that are more prevalent and/or extreme than those seen from radio pulsars in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, suggesting repeating FRBs and pulsars occupy distinct magnetoionic environments.

We also report nebular emission-line fluxes for 24 highly secure FRB hosts (including 10 hosts for the first time), and assess their placement on a BPT diagram, finding that FRB hosts trace the underlying galaxy population. We further find that the hosts of repeating FRBs are not confined to the star-forming locus, contrary to previous findings. . Leveraging the CHIME/FRB catalog and existing ULX catalogs, we search for spatially coincident ULX–FRB pairs. We identify a total of 28 ULXs spatially coincident with the localization regions for 17 FRBs, but find that the DM-inferred redshifts for the FRBs are inconsistent with the ULX redshifts, disfavoring an association between these specific ULX–FRB pairs.
Abstract
We present a Monte Carlo–based population synthesis study of fast radio burst (FRB) dispersion and scattering focusing on the first catalog of sources detected with the Canadian Hydrogen ...Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) project. We simulate intrinsic properties and propagation effects for a variety of FRB population models and compare the simulated distributions of dispersion measures and scattering timescales with the corresponding distributions from the CHIME/FRB catalog. Our simulations confirm the results of previous population studies, which suggested that the interstellar medium of the host galaxy alone (simulated based on the NE2001 model) cannot explain the observed scattering timescales of FRBs. We therefore consider additional sources of scattering, namely, the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of intervening galaxies and the circumburst medium whose properties are modeled based on typical Galactic plane environments. We find that a population of FRBs with scattering contributed by these media is marginally consistent with the CHIME/FRB catalog. In this scenario, our simulations favor a population of FRBs offset from their galaxy centers over a population that is distributed along the spiral arms. However, if the models proposing the CGM as a source of intense scattering are incorrect, then we conclude that FRBs may inhabit environments with more extreme properties than those inferred for pulsars in the Milky Way.
Providing adequate bag-mask ventilation (BMV) is an essential skill for neonatal resuscitation. Often this skill is learned using simulation manikins. Currently, there is no means of measuring the ...adequacy of ventilation in simulated scenarios. Thus, it is not possible to ascertain proficiency. The first aim of this study was to measure the pressure generated during BMV as performed by providers with different skill levels and measure the impact of different feedback mechanisms. The second aim was to measure the pressure volume characteristics of two neonatal manikins to see how closely they reflect newborn lung mechanics.
In Phase I to achieve the first aim, we evaluated BMV skills in different level providers including residents (n=5), fellows (n=5), neonatal nurse practitioners (n=5) and neonatologists (n=5). Each provider was required to provide BMV for 2-min epochs on the SimNewB (Laerdal), which had been instrumented to measure pressure-volume characteristics. In sequential 2-min epochs, providers were given different feedback including chest-wall movement alone compared to manometer plus chest-wall movement or chest-wall movement plus manometer plus laptop lung volume depiction. In Phase II of the study we measured pressure-volume characteristics in instrumented versions of the SimNewB (Laerdal) and NeoNatalie (Laerdal).
In Phase I, all providers are compared with the neonatologists. All measurements of tidal volume (Vt) are below the desired 5 ml kg(-1). The greatest difference in Vt between the neonatologists and other providers occurs when only chest-wall movement is provided. A linear relationship is noted between Vt and PIP for both SimNewB and NeoNatalie. The compliance curves are not 'S-shaped' and are different between the two models (P<0.001).
Phase I of this study demonstrates that the SimNewB with the feedback of chest-wall movement alone was the best method of distinguishing experienced from inexperienced providers during simulated BMV. Therefore this is likely to be the best method to ascertain proficiency. Phase II of the study shows that the currently available neonatal simulation manikins do not have pressure-volume characteristics that are reflective of newborn lung mechanics, which can result in suboptimal training.
