Moreover, a new nonlinear fatigue damage accumulation model is proposed to account for these two effects. Experimental datasets of pressure vessel steel P355NL1 and four other materials under two‐block loadings are used for model comparative study. Results indicate that the proposed model yields more accurate fatigue life predictions for the five materials than the other models.
Ammonia, one of the major limiting environment factors in aquaculture, may pose a threat to the shrimp growth, reproduction and survival. In this study, to understand molecular differences of ...transcriptomic and metabolomic responses and investigate the tolerance mechanisms underlying ammonia stress in Litopenaeus vannamei, ammonia-tolerant family (LV-AT) and ammonia-sensitive family (LV-AS) of these two extreme families were exposed to high-concentration (NH4Cl, 46 mg/L) ammonia for 24 h. The comparative transcriptome analysis between ammonia-treated and control (LV-C) groups revealed involvement of immune defense, cytoskeleton remodeling, antioxidative system and metabolic pathway in ammonia-stress response of L. vannamei. Likewise, metabolomics analysis showed that ammonia exposure could disturb amino acid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism and lipid metabolism, with metabolism related-genes changed according to RNA-seq analysis. The comparison of metabolite and transcript profiles between LV-AT and LV-AS indicated that LV-AT used the enhanced glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle strategies for energy supply and ammonia excretion to adapt high-concentration ammonia. Furthermore, some of genes involved in the detoxification and ammonia excretion were highly expressed in LV-AT. We speculate that the higher ability of ammonia excretion and detoxification and the accelerated energy metabolism for energy supplies might be the adaptive strategies for LV-AT relative to LV-AS after ammonia stress. Collectively, the combination of transcriptomics and metabolomics results will greatly contribute to incrementally understand the stress responses on ammonia exposure to L. vannamei and supply molecular level support for evaluating the environmental effects of ammonia on aquatic organisms. The results further constitute new sights on the potential molecular mechanisms of ammonia adaptive strategies in shrimps at the transcriptomics and metabolomics levels.

In the low cycle fatigue (LCF) regime, fatigue failure of metallic materials with high strength and less impurities generally dominates by multiple surface crack propagation and coalescence, in which its final failure shows a stochastic nature on crack initiation, propagation and coalescence under cyclic loadings. According to this, the competing failure modes of multiple surface cracks and interior cracks are studied through coupling numerical simulations with fracture mechanics methods. In particular, a probabilistic procedure for modeling multiple surface crack propagation and coalescence is established by incorporating Monte Carlo simulation with experimental evidences, including surface crack density and crack length distributions measured from LCF replica tests of 30NiCrMoV12 steel. In addition, it calculates the probability of coalescence of neighboring cracks with allowance for their interactions and local plastic deformation at the crack tips. Finally, it estimates the remaining usage lives of specimens from initial state to critical cracks by propagation and coalescence of dispersed cracks.
Water pollution caused by the highly toxic metal hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) creates significant human health and ecological risks. In this study, a novel adsorbent was used to treat ...Cr(VI)-containing wastewater; the adsorbent was prepared using red mud (RM) generated from the alumina production industry and the rare earth element lanthanum. This study explored adsorption performance, kinetics, and mechanisms. Results showed that the adsorption kinetics of the RM modified by lanthanum (La-RM), followed the pseudo-second-order model, with a rapid adsorption rate. Cr(VI) adsorption was positively associated with the absorbent dose, pH, temperature, and initial Cr(VI) concentration; coexisting anions had little impact. The maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity was 17.35 mg/g. Cr(VI) adsorption on La-RM was a mono-layer adsorption pattern, following the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic parameters showed the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on La-RM occurred as a result of LaOCl formation on the RM surface, which in turn further reacted with Cr(VI) in the wastewater. This study highlighted a method for converting industrial waste into a valuable material for wastewater treatment. The novel absorbent could be used as a potential adsorbent for treating Cr(VI)-contaminating wastewater, due to its cost-effectiveness and high adsorption capability.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are violent ejections of magnetized plasma from the Sun that can trigger geomagnetic storms, endanger satellite operations, and destroy electrical ...infrastructures on the Earth. After systematically searching Sun-as-a-star spectra observed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from 2010 May to 2022 May, we identified eight CMEs associated with flares and filament eruptions by analyzing the blue-wing asymmetry of the O
iii
52.58 nm line profiles. Combined with images simultaneously taken by the 30.4 nm channel of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board SDO, the full velocity and propagation direction for each of the eight CMEs are derived. We find a strong correlation between geomagnetic indices (
Kp
and Dst) and the angle between the CME propagation direction and the Sun–Earth line, suggesting that Sun-as-a-star spectroscopic observations at extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths can potentially help to improve the prediction accuracy of the geoeffectiveness of CMEs. Moreover, an analysis of synthesized long-exposure Sun-as-a-star spectra implies that it is possible to detect CMEs from other stars through blue-wing asymmetries or blueshifts of spectral lines.
Odor emissions from intensive livestock farms have attracted increased attention due to their adverse impacts on the environment and human health. Nevertheless, a systematic summary regarding the ...characteristics, sampling detection, and control technology for odor emissions from livestock farms is currently lacking. This paper compares the development of odor standards in different countries and summarizes the odor emission characteristics of livestock farms. Ammonia, the most common odor substance, can reach as high as 4100 ppm in the compost area. Sampling methods for point and area source odor emissions are introduced in this paper, and odor analysis methods are compared. Olfactometers, odorometers, and the triangle odor bag method are usually used to measure odor concentration. Odor control technologies are divided into three categories: physical (activated carbon adsorption, masking, and dilution diffusion), chemical (plant extract spraying, wet scrubbing, combustion, non-thermal plasma, and photocatalytic oxidation), and biological (biofiltration, biotrickling, and bioscrubbing). Each technology is elucidated, and the performance in the removal of different pollutants is summarized. The application scopes, costs, operational stability, and secondary pollution of the technologies are compared. The generation of secondary pollution and long-term operation stability are issues that should be considered in future technological development. Lastly, a case analysis for engineering application is conducted.

At the end of 2019 Wuhan witnessed an outbreak of "atypical pneumonia" that later developed into a global pandemic. Metagenomic sequencing rapidly revealed the causative agent of this outbreak to be ...a novel coronavirus denoted SARS-CoV-2. To provide a snapshot of the pathogens in pneumonia-associated respiratory samples from Wuhan prior to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, we collected bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples from 408 patients presenting with pneumonia and acute respiratory infections at the Central Hospital of Wuhan between 2016 and 2017. Unbiased total RNA sequencing was performed to reveal their "total infectome", including viruses, bacteria and fungi. We identified 35 pathogen species, comprising 13 RNA viruses, 3 DNA viruses, 16 bacteria and 3 fungi, often at high abundance and including multiple co-infections (13.5%). SARS-CoV-2 was not present. These data depict a stable core infectome comprising common respiratory pathogens such as rhinoviruses and influenza viruses, an atypical respiratory virus (EV-D68), and a single case of a sporadic zoonotic pathogen-Chlamydia psittaci. Samples from patients experiencing respiratory disease on average had higher pathogen abundance than healthy controls. Phylogenetic analyses of individual pathogens revealed multiple origins and global transmission histories, highlighting the connectedness of the Wuhan population. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the pathogens associated with acute respiratory infections and pneumonia, which were more diverse and complex than obtained using targeted PCR or qPCR approaches. These data also suggest that SARS-CoV-2 or closely related viruses were absent from Wuhan in 2016-2017.
DNA methylation, which can affect the expression level of genes, is one of the most vital epigenetic modifications in mammals. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) plays an important role in ...muscle development; however, DNA methylation of the FGFR1 promoter has not been studied to date in cattle. Our study focused on methylation of the FGFR1 promoter and its effect on bovine myoblast proliferation and differentiation. We identified the FGFR1 core promoter by using luciferase reporter assays; we then studied FGFR1 expression by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the methylation pattern in the FGFR1 core promoter by bisulfite sequencing polymerase chain reaction in bovine muscle tissue at three different developmental stages. We used RNAi strategy to investigate the function of FGFR1 in myoblast proliferation and differentiation. Results showed that the FGFR1 core promoters were located at the R2 (−509 to ~−202 bp) and R4 (−1295 to ~−794 bp) regions upstream of the FGFR1 gene. FGFR1 expression level was negatively associated with the degree of methylation of the FGFR1 core promoter during the developmental process. In addition, we found that FGFR1 can promote myoblast proliferation, but had no effect on myoblast differentiation. In conclusion, our results suggest that FGFR1 can promote myoblast proliferation and its transcription can be regulated by the methylation level of the core promoter. Our findings provide a mechanistic basis for the improvement of animal breeding.

This study investigated the effects of denitrification sludge EPS enhanced (DS-EPSCN) by a fluctuating carbon and nitrogen ratio (C/N) cultivation strategy on the properties of Anammox granules under ...extreme acid or alkaline shock. The results showed that the DS-EPSCN significantly improved the nitrogen removal performance of low-density Anammox granular sludge (Granules-L) and high-density Anammox granular sludge (Granules-H) under extreme acid shock (pH 5.0). The contents of high-molecular-weight substances (such as aromatic proteins and polysaccharides) in the DS-EPSCN rose markedly, contributing to a substantial increase in the flocculation efficiency under acidic conditions and increasing the granule stability. In addition, abundant amounts of N-butyryl-dl-homoserine lactone (C4-HSL) and N-hexanoyl-dl-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) in the DS-EPSCN promoted the granule activity. However, under extreme alkaline shock (pH 10.5), the flocculation efficiency of the DS-EPSCN was poor, and the addition of DS-EPSCN had no influence on the stability of the granules but improved the activity of the Granules-H. The reason was that the release mechanism of the endogenous acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) signals in the Granules-H was activated by the exogenous C4-HSL and C6-HSL in the DS-EPSCN under alkaline conditions, leading to increased Granules-H activity. This research provides a novel approach to enhance the resistance of Anammox granular sludge to extreme pH shock.
