This is the first independent, full-life biography of Lu Xun, the most celebrated Chinese writer of the twentieth century, in any European language. It sets aside all the propaganda that has accrued ...over the sixty-six years since his death, and presents him as a credible human being, neither aggrandized nor belittled. While taking on board the findings of the most recent research on Lu Xun's life, and so being of interest to specialists, this biography is designed to be understood by any reader. As Lu Xun's life spanned the transition from Manchu empire to citizens' Republic, it can be seen as one man's history of China's progress to modernity—a progress in which he personally played a significant part. The facts of Lu Xun's life are presented objectively, but they do not always speak for themselves. The author has therefore drawn on his lifelong study of modern Chinese literature to offer intelligent interpretations where necessary. Since the subject of this biography was a writer, the author has appended to the chronicle some brief ‘sketches' of his work for the benefit of those unacquainted with it.
We describe the use of a Total Control Introducer (TCI) in combination with video laryngoscopy (VL) to place a left-sided double-lumen endotracheal tube (DLT) in a patient with a history of difficult ...laryngoscopy undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). VL was used to obtain visualisation of the glottis and a TCI articulating introducer was used to dynamically navigate the airway and access the trachea. A 39 French DLT was subsequently passed over the TCI shaft and into the trachea under indirect visualisation. The TCI shaft was removed and the DLT was gently guided into the left main bronchus. Successful endobronchial intubation was confirmed with capnography, auscultation and fibreoptic bronchoscopy. We propose that the combined use of VL and a TCI can facilitate placement of a DLT in a patient with a known difficult airway who may otherwise be limited to a bronchial blocker placement for lung isolation during VATS.
This paper provides an overview of the validation of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operational retrievals of atmospheric carbon trace gas profiles, specifically carbon ...monoxide (CO), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), from the NOAA-Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS), a NOAA enterprise algorithm that retrieves atmospheric profile environmental data records (EDRs) under global non-precipitating (clear to partly cloudy) conditions. Vertical information about atmospheric trace gases is obtained from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), an infrared Fourier transform spectrometer that measures high resolution Earth radiance spectra from NOAA operational low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, including the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) and follow-on Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) series beginning with NOAA-20. The NUCAPS CO, CH4, and CO2 profile EDRs are rigorously validated in this paper using well-established independent truth datasets, namely total column data from ground-based Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) sites, and in situ vertical profile data obtained from aircraft and balloon platforms via the NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission and NOAA AirCore sampler, respectively. Statistical analyses using these datasets demonstrate that the NUCAPS carbon gas profile EDRs generally meet JPSS Level 1 global performance requirements, with the absolute accuracy and precision of CO 5% and 15%, respectively, in layers where CrIS has vertical sensitivity; CH4 and CO2 product accuracies are both found to be within ±1%, with precisions of ≈1.5% and ⪅0.5%, respectively, throughout the tropospheric column.

In the late Qing period, from the Opium War to the 1911 revolution, China absorbed the initial impact of Western arms, manufactures, science and culture, in that order. This volume of essays deals ...with the reception of Western literature, on the evidence of translations made. Having to overcome Chinese assumptions of cultural superiority, the perception that the West had a literature worth notice grew only gradually. It was not until the very end of the 19th century that a translation of a Western novel (La dame aux camélias) achieved popular acclaim. But this opened the floodgates: in the first decade of the 20th century, more translated fiction was published than original fiction.The core essays in this collection deal with aspects of this influx according to division of territory. Some take key works (e.g. Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, Byron's "The Isles of Greece"), some sample genres (science fiction, detective fiction, fables, political novels), the common attention being to the adjustments made by translators to suit the prevailing aesthetic, cultural and social norms, and/or the current needs and preoccupations of the receiving public. A broad overview of translation activities is given in the introduction.To present the subject in its true guise, that of a major cultural shift, supporting papers are included to fill in the background and to describe some of the effects of this foreign invasion on native literature. A new unified theory and methodology is presented to characterize and model long-term memory effects of microwave components by extending the poly-harmonic distortion (PHD) model to include dynamics ...that are identified from pulsed envelope X-parameter measurements on an NVNA. The model correctly predicts the transient RF response to time-varying RF excitations including the asymmetry between off-to-on and on-to-off switched behavior as well as responses to conventional wide-bandwidth communication signals that excite long-term memory effects in power amplifiers. The model is implemented in the ADS circuit envelope simulator.
We have developed a pooled ORF expression technology, POET, that uses recombinational cloning and proteomic methods (two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry) to identify ORFs that ...when expressed are likely to yield high levels of soluble, purified protein. Because the method works on pools of ORFs, the procedures needed to subclone, express, purify, and assay protein expression for hundreds of clones are greatly simplified. Small scale expression and purification of 12 positive clones identified by POET from a pool of 688 Caenorhabditis elegans ORFs expressed in Escherichia coli yielded on average 6 times as much protein as 12 negative clones. Larger scale expression and purification of six of the positive clones yielded 47-374 mg of purified protein/liter. Using POET, pools of ORFs can be constructed, and the pools of the resulting proteins can be analyzed and manipulated to rapidly acquire information about the attributes of hundreds of proteins simultaneously.
