Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics is actively evolving the Super Charm-Tau Factory project. A drift chamber with a small hexagonal cell was proposed for this collider. For experimental measurements ...of a spatial resolution, a drift chamber small prototype consisting of seven cells has been developed. The experiments have been carried out in He/C3H8 (60/40) and He/C2H6 (50/50) gas mixtures at different gas gains using cosmic particles. For this purpose, a calibration procedure for R(t, α) has been developed and fine-tuned, taking into account small prototype features and an angular dependence of isochrones at the edge of the cells. As a result, the average spatial resolutions are less than 100μm for gas gains greater than 5⋅104.

The Philips Digital Photon Counter (DPC) is a silicon photomultiplier combining Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (G-APD) and dedicated readout electronics in the same chip. The DPC is a promising ...photon sensor for future RICH detectors. A known issue of G-APD is its sensitivity to radiation damage. Two DPC sensors were tested using 800MeV/c protons. An increase of dark counting rate with proton fluence up to 4·1011cm−2 has been measured.
•Radiation hardness of the Philips Digital Photon Counter was tested using protons.•Proton fluence of up to 4·1011cm−2 was accumulated.•Dark counting rate increased by about 4 orders of magnitude at maximum fluence.

Since recently, the design of the detector for the Super Charm-Tau Factory has been actively developed at the Budker Institute. The principal tasks of the detector tracking system are to provide ...efficient reconstruction of charged-particle tracks, to determine their momenta and impact parameters with high precision and to identify particles using their energy losses. This article describes various issues related to the development of the drift chamber, the main part of the tracking system.
Hundreds of concurrent collisions per bunch crossing are expected at future hadron colliders. Precision timing calorimetry has been advocated as a way to mitigate the pileup effects and, thanks to ...their excellent time resolution, microchannel plates (MCPs) are good candidate detectors for this goal. We report on the response of MCPs, used as secondary emission detectors, to single relativistic particles and to electromagnetic showers. Several prototypes, with different geometries and characteristics, were exposed to particle beams at the INFN-LNF Beam Test Facility and at CERN. Their time resolution and efficiency are measured for single particles and as a function of the multiplicity of particles. Efficiencies between 50% and 90% to single relativistic particles are reached, and up to 100% in presence of a large number of particles. Time resolutions between 20 ps and 30 ps are obtained.

A time-of-flight detector based on microchannel plates (MCP) is under development. The main goal is the creation of a radiation hard large area detector providing ∼10 ps time resolution for single ...charged particle in strong magnetic field. Conceptually, the detector consists of Cherenkov radiator covered with semitransparent photocathode followed by a chevron pair of MCPs. The detector design and the status of the development are reported.

The work concerns the development of aerogel radiators for RICH detectors. Aerogel tiles with a refractive index of 1.05 were tested with a RICH prototype on the electron beam on the VEPP-4M ...collider. It has been shown that polishing with silk tissue yields good surface quality, the amount of light loss at this surface being about 5–7%. The Cherenkov angle resolution was measured for a tile in two conditions: with a clean exit face and with a polished exit face. The number of photons detected was 13.3 and 12.7 for the clean and polished surfaces, respectively. The Cherenkov angle resolution for the polished surface is 55% worse, which can be explained with the forward scattering on the polished surface. A tile with a crack inside was also tested. The experimental data show that the Cherenkov angle resolution is the same for tracks crossing the crack area and in a crack-free area.
