The Daya Bay experiment has observed correlations between reactor core fuel evolution and changes in the reactor antineutrino flux and energy spectrum. Four antineutrino detectors in two experimental ...halls were used to identify 2.2 million inverse beta decays (IBDs) over 1230 days spanning multiple fuel cycles for each of six 2.9 GW_{th} reactor cores at the Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power plants. Using detector data spanning effective ^{239}Pu fission fractions F_{239} from 0.25 to 0.35, Daya Bay measures an average IBD yield σover ¯_{f} of (5.90±0.13)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission and a fuel-dependent variation in the IBD yield, dσ_{f}/dF_{239}, of (-1.86±0.18)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission. This observation rejects the hypothesis of a constant antineutrino flux as a function of the ^{239}Pu fission fraction at 10 standard deviations. The variation in IBD yield is found to be energy dependent, rejecting the hypothesis of a constant antineutrino energy spectrum at 5.1 standard deviations. While measurements of the evolution in the IBD spectrum show general agreement with predictions from recent reactor models, the measured evolution in total IBD yield disagrees with recent predictions at 3.1σ. This discrepancy indicates that an overall deficit in the measured flux with respect to predictions does not result from equal fractional deficits from the primary fission isotopes ^{235}U, ^{239}Pu, ^{238}U, and ^{241}Pu. Based on measured IBD yield variations, yields of (6.17±0.17) and (4.27±0.26)×10^{-43} cm^{2}/fission have been determined for the two dominant fission parent isotopes ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu. A 7.8% discrepancy between the observed and predicted ^{235}U yields suggests that this isotope may be the primary contributor to the reactor antineutrino anomaly.
Schisandrin B is an active monomer of the Chinese magnolia vine (Schisandra chinensis) that can reduce transaminase activity in liver cells, inhibit lipid peroxidation, enhance antioxidant status, ...has protective effects in the liver and has antitumor effects. The present study investigated the potential protective effects of schisandrin B on the p53 signaling pathway in attenuating the inflammatory response, oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) in adult rats. Behavioral examination, inclined plate test and spinal cord water content were used to evaluate the protective effect of schisandrin B in TSCI rats. The expression levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), nuclear factor (NF)‑κB subunit p65 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‑α were examined using ELISA kits. Western blot analysis was performed to analyze the protein expression of caspase‑3 and phosphorylated (p)‑p53 in TSCI rats. In the present study, schisandrin B improved behavioral examination results and the maximum angle of inclined plate test, and inhibited spinal cord water content in rats with TSCI. Notably, schisandrin B reduced the activation of traumatic injury‑associated pathways, including SOD, MDA, NF‑κB p65 and TNF‑α, in TSCI rats. In addition, schisandrin B suppressed the TSCI‑induced expression of caspase‑3 and p‑p53 in TSCI rats. These results indicated that schisandrin B may attenuate the inflammatory response, oxidative stress and apoptosis in TSCI rats by inhibiting the p53 signaling pathway in adult rats.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty using conventional PMMA bone cements have been effectively used to treat osteoporotic spine fractures with good short- and medium-term results. However, PMMA has some undesirable properties, including its high setting temperature, lack of osseointegration, and large stiffness mismatch with osteoporotic bone. These properties are responsible for some postoperative complications.
Strontium-containing hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) bioactive bone cement consists of a filler blend of strontium-containing hydroxyapatite, fumed silica and benzoyl peroxide; and a resin blend of bisphenol A diglycidylether methacrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate, and N, N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. Its properties, including mechanical strength, setting temperature, biocompatibility, and osseoinduction, were compared with other cements in vitro and in vivo. Early clinical results are presented.
The Sr-HA cement has a setting time of 15 to 18 minutes, a maximum setting temperature of 58 degrees C, a compressive strength of 40.9 MPa, bending strength of 31.3 MPa, and a bending modulus of 1,408 MPa. The bending strength and modulus are closer to human cancellous bone. Sr-HA cement promotes osteoblast attachment and mineralization in vitro and bone growth and osseointegration in vivo. In a pilot study, 23 cases of osteoporotic fractures treated with this cement with a mean follow-up of 18 months suggest that it is as effective as PMMA in relieving pain.
Oral strontium has been shown to induce new bone formation and is effective in reducing fracture risk in osteoporosis. Our data suggest that strontium delivered locally has the same effect; thus, the combination of strontium with HA in a cement with a low setting temperature, adequate stiffness, and low viscosity makes this a good bioactive cement for vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty.
It was found beforehand that low nanoparticles loaded polymer composites with improved mechanical performance can be prepared by conventional compounding technique in which the nanoparticles are ...pre-grafted by some polymers using irradiation. To examine the applicability of the approach, a tougher polypropylene (PP) was compounded with nano-silica by industrial-scale twin screw extruder and injection molding machine in the present work. The results of tensile tests indicated that the nanoparticles can simultaneously provide PP with stiffening, strengthening and toughening effects at a rather low filler content (typically 0.5% by volume). The presence of grafting polymers on the nanoparticles improves the tailorability of the composites. Due to the viscoelastic nature of the matrix and the grafting polymers, the tensile performance of the composites filled with untreated and treated nanoparticles is highly dependent on loading rate. With increasing the crosshead speed for the tensile tests, the dominant failure mode changed from plastic yielding of the matrix to brittle cleavage.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of baclofen for treatment of refractory gastroesophageal reflux-induced chronic cough (GERC) unresponsive to standard anti-reflux therapy.
Sixteen patients with ...refractory GERC were given an 8-wk course of baclofen 20 mg three times a day as an add-on therapy to omeprazole. Changes in the cough symptom score, cough threshold to capsaicin, reflux symptom score and possible adverse effects were determined after treatment. The variables of multi-channel intraluminal impedance combined with pH monitoring were compared between responders and non-responders to baclofen.
Twelve of 16 patients completed treatment. Cough disappeared or improved in 56.3% (9/16) of patients, including 6 patients with acid reflux-induced cough (66.7%) and 3 patients with non-acid reflux-induced cough (33.3%). With baclofen treatment, the cough symptom score began to decrease at week 2, was clearly decreased at week 6 and reached a minimum at week 8. At the end of therapy, the lowest concentration of capsaicin required for induction of ≥ 2 and ≥ 5 coughs increased from 0.98 (1.46) to 1.95 (6.82) μmol/L (Z = -2.281, P = 0.024) and from 1.95 (7.31) to 7.8 (13.65) μmol/L (Z = -2.433, P = 0.014), respectively, and the reflux symptom score decreased from 8.0 ± 1.6 to 6.8 ± 0.8 (t = 2.454, P = 0.023). The number of acid reflux episodes was significantly lower in responders than in non-responders. The main adverse effects were somnolence, dizziness and fatigue.
Baclofen is a useful, but suboptimal treatment option for refractory GERC.
The present paper investigates the effect of fiber treatment on the mechanical properties of unidirectional sisal-reinforced epoxy composites. Treatments including alkalization, acetylation, ...cyanoethylation, the use of silane coupling agent, and heating were carried out to modify the fiber surface and its internal structure. As indicated by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and tensile tests, variations in composition, structure, dimensions, morphology and mechanical properties of the sisal fibers can be induced by means of different modification methods. When the treated fibers were incorporated into an epoxy matrix, mechanical characterization of the laminates revealed the importance of two types of interface: one between fiber bundles and the matrix and the other between the ultimate cells. In general, fiber treatments can significantly improve adhesion at the former interface and also lead to ingress of the matrix resin into the fibers, obstructing pull-out of the cells. As a result, the dependence of laminate mechanical properties on treatment methods becomes complicated. On the basis of a detailed analysis, the relationship between optimized fiber treatment and performance improvement of sisal composites was proposed.
Application of auto-SCT in the post-remission therapy for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with ALL is controversial. We analyzed the outcomes of 79 AYAs (15-24 years) with ALL who received our ...designed total therapy protocol with auto-SCT in first CR from 1990 to 2009. The estimated OS and EFS at 5 years for the cohort were 62.8±5.9 and 61.5±5.7%. The cumulative non-relapse mortality and relapse rate at 5 years for the cohort were 7.2±3.1 and 33.6±5.8%. Time to CR >4 weeks was the only independent unfavorable factor associated with OS, EFS and relapse in multivariate analysis. Patients in standard risk (SR) group and high risk (HR) group had better OS (78.3±7.4, 63.8±10.2 vs 38.1±11.6%) and EFS (78.0±7.4, 63.4±9.4 vs 32.4±11.3%), and lower relapse rate (15.9±6.5, 31.5±9.5 vs 65.7±11.8%) compared with patients in very high risk (VHR) group. Our data confirmed that auto-SCT-based total therapy might be an optional treatment strategy for AYAs with ALL in SR. Patients in HR also could get benefit from such schedule. But for those in VHR, allogenetic SCT is still the prior recommendation for the frequent recurrence after auto-SCT.

Current manufacturing industry requires product data management (PDM) for efficient product development and production. As an important part of effective PDM solutions, workflow management ...facilitates creating and executing workflow so as to streamline business processes. Unfortunately, existing workflow management solutions are designed to handle static business processes; when a workflow change occurs, these solutions usually stop the affected workflow completely and start the modified one from scratch. This over-simplified approach leads to re-execution of nodes whose work have been lost due to the restart process. This paper proposes an approach to facilitate efficient dynamic workflow change by minimising repetitive execution of finished workflow nodes. This approach also address the data integrity issue by managing various workflow data such as node properties and scripts. A case study has been carried out in a PDM system to illustrate the potential application of the approach.
