Intraventricular meningiomas are rare and make up between 0.5% and 3% of all intracranial meningiomas, representing one of the most challenging tumors in neurosurgery due to their difficult location. ...Being initially asymptomatic, such tumors usually attain large size before clinical presentation and diagnostic detection. Available literature concerned with their surgical management remains scarce. Herein, we present a case of microsurgical resection of incidental intraventricular meningioma in a 32-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital due to the sudden loss of consciousness, retrograde amnesia, and nausea following a head trauma. Routine brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed an irregular expansive formation located in the occipital horn of the right lateral ventricle showing heterogeneous contrast enhancement. The patient underwent right-side temporal osteoplastic craniotomy with total tumor microsurgical resection followed by external ventricular drainage, and recovered fully afterwards. Histopathologic analysis of tumor tissue samples confirmed the tumor as meningioma WHO grade I. Postoperative brain computed tomography confirmed complete tumor resection. In conclusion, intraventricular meningiomas are rather rare extra-axial tumors and may present with various symptoms depending on their size and difficult location. The development of most modern neuroimaging methods offers the opportunity of their precise and accurate diagnosis, better surgical planning, and favorable outcome. Microsurgical gross resection utilizing intraoperative neuromonitoring and cutting-edge neurosurgical armamentarium remains the treatment of choice for these location-challenging and surgically demanding, predominantly benign intracranial tumors.
The objective of this study was to compare the psysico-chemical composition and fatty acid (FFA) profile of traditional dry cured bacon Slavonska slanina, produced from the authentic Black Slavonian ...Pig (BP) and modern pigs (MP), using traditional homemade principles. The samples of Slavonska slanina produced from BP had a significantly (p < 0.05) higher fat content (78.32%) than the samples produced from MP (46.47%), while the samples produced from MP showed significantly higher (p < 0.05) protein and moisture content. The samples produced from BP also showed lower aw and salt content but higher pH. Determination of fatty acid composition was performed at the end of the production process. The composition of fatty acids with respect to the groups of saturated (SFA), monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fatty acids was determined, as well as the ratios n-6/n-3 and PUFA/SFA. The results of fatty acid composition determination of Slavonska slanina produced from BP and MP show that oleic acid (C18: 1n9) is the most dominant fatty acid from the MUFA group (47.02 and 46.25%), the most common SFA acid was palmitic acid (C16: 0) (23.44 and 24.96%), and PUFA linoleic acid (C18: 2n-6c) (10.76 and 9.74%). The genotype had a significant (p < 0.05) effect on the SFA and USFA composition of Slavonska slanina. The ratios PUFA/SFA (0.34−0.28) and n-6/n-3 (31.84−27.34) for samples of Slavonska slanina produced from BP and MP are in concordance with previously published data for different dry cured meat products, and do not comply with the nutritionally recommended values of international health organizations (PUFA/SFA > 0.4 and n-6/n-3 < 4).
Recurrence of intracranial aneurysm after initial microsurgical or endovascular treatment is uncommon. Although the exact etiology remains unknown, recurrent aneurysms may be observed in surgical ...patients with big and multiple aneurysms, arterial hypertension, non-atherosclerotic cerebrovascular arteriopathies, as well as in those with a familial history of the disease. Such recurrence can occur over a wide period ranging from several months to years after the initial aneurysm treatment. Still, the occurrence delayed by more than 20 years is rather unusual. Herein, we present a case of a 70-year-old female patient who developed late intracranial aneurysm relapse 30 years after successful microsurgical clipping of the middle cerebral artery aneurysm. We also provide a brief review of relevant literature, discussing the etiology and pathophysiology of aneurysm reappearance, as well as different treatment options available. In conclusion, one should always consider the possibility of intracranial aneurysm recurrence regardless of the mode and time of primary surgery. In such a case, a multidisciplinary management approach using flow diverting endovascular techniques is advised in selected patients.
Introduction: The aim of this study was to use cross-sectional research to determine the relationship between serum ferritin levels and arterial hypertension in women who work in shifts and women ...with regular daytime working hours.
Methods: The respondents included 67 female nurses divided into two groups: nurses working in 12-hour shifts (7 am to 7 pm/7 pm to 7 am) were the test group, while nurses regularly working for 8 hours (7 am to 3 pm) were the control group. Data collection included information on associated diseases, chronic medication, last menstruation, duration of menopause, cigarette smoking, number of years of employment in shift work and regular daytime work, laboratory and anthropometric parameters and blood pressure levels.
Results: In all respondents, there was a significant and positive relationship between ferritin and CRP levels, i.e. the higher the CRP levels, the higher the ferritin levels (Rho = 0.401; P = 0.001). Among respondents who have regular daytime working hours, there was no significant association between ferritin and other indicators, while in the group of those who work in shifts, there was a significant and positive association between ferritin and CRP (Rho = 0.468; P = 0.002). Finally, a positive correlation was found between the number of years of employment in shift work and systolic blood pressure levels, i.e. higher systolic pressure was observed in those respondents who worked longer in shifts (Rho = 0.424, P = 0.03).
Conclusion: The study demonstrated a significant correlation between the number of years of employment in shift work and systolic blood pressure. A positive correlation between serum CRP and ferritin levels was also observed in all respondents, and especially in shift workers.
Spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) can occur unexpectedly and independently of the classic risk factors. Several different factors could affect intracranial aneurysm (IA) rupture, such as ...morphological and hemodynamic factors. The aim of this study was to establish the potential association of meteorological data such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, and humidity, and the onset of clinical symptoms preceding hospital admission of patients with acute SAH due to IA rupture. This retrospective study included 130 consecutive patients admitted for non-traumatic SAH with a determinable onset of SAH symptoms. The effects of meteorological parameters of atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, and relative air humidity on the day of acute SAH onset and 24 hours prior to the onset of symptoms were recorded and analyzed in each patient. Spearman rank correlation analysis was used to assess the risks of incident SAH on the basis of daily meteorological data. Seasonal incidence of acute SAH showed the peak incidence in winter and a trough in summer, with monthly incidence peak in January and December. The circadian rhythm analysis showed the peak incidence of SAH in the forenoon, followed by the evening. Acute SAH incidence showed moderate positive association with daily atmospheric pressure (p<0.05), while no association was found with ambient temperature and relative air humidity. Our results suggested no significant association of changes in ambient temperature and relative humidity with the risk of SAH. Increases in atmospheric pressure were weakly associated with a higher SAH risk. Additional studies are needed to establish in detail both meteorological and morphological factors important to predict IA rupture and SAH.
Besides causing serious threats to people’s physical health and lives, pandemics can lead to psychological distress. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and ...mental health among adults in Croatia and its association with sociodemographic factors, perceptions of pandemic, locus of control, coping with stress and perceived social support. A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted using a snowball sampling technique. The online survey collected information on sociodemographics, chronic health conditions, self-isolation measure, perception of COVID-19, mental health status, locus of control, coping with stress and perception of social support. Mental health status was assessed by the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). A total of 1482 participants (252 males and 1230 females) completed the study. The mean age of the participants was 33.3 ± 12.2 years, 43 % of the participants had elevated levels of anxiety and 18 % suffered from severe and extremely severe anxiety, 33 % had elevated levels of depression and 12 % suffered from severe and extremely severe depression, and 55 % had elevated levels of stress with 13 % suffering from severe and extremely severe stress. The strongest predictors of mental health symptoms were coping with stress, locus of control, and perceived social support. These results highlight the necessity of implementing psychological interventions during the pandemic to improve the mental health of the adults and vulnerable groups in particular that should include identified factors associated with better mental health status such as coping with stress focused on problem, social diversion and social support.
