Abstract We have searched for radio pulsations toward 49 Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) 1FGL Catalog γ -ray sources using the Green Bank Telescope at 350 MHz. We detected 18 millisecond pulsars ...(MSPs) in blind searches of the data; 10 of these were discoveries unique to our survey. 16 are binaries, with eight having short orbital periods P B < 1 day. No radio pulsations from young pulsars were detected, although three targets are coincident with apparently radio-quiet γ -ray pulsars discovered in LAT data. Here, we give an overview of the survey and present radio and γ -ray timing results for the 10 MSPs discovered. These include the only isolated MSP discovered in our survey and six short- P B binary MSPs. Of these, three have very-low-mass companions ( M c ≪ 0.1 M ⊙ ) and hence belong to the class of black widow pulsars. Two have more massive, nondegenerate companions with extensive radio eclipses and orbitally modulated X-ray emission consistent with the redback class. Significant γ -ray pulsations have been detected from nine of the discoveries. This survey and similar efforts suggest that the majority of Galactic γ -ray sources at high Galactic latitudes are either MSPs or relatively nearby nonrecycled pulsars, with the latter having on average a much smaller radio/ γ -ray beaming ratio as compared to MSPs. It also confirms that past surveys suffered from an observational bias against finding short- P B MSP systems.
We report on the discovery of eight repeating fast radio burst (FRB) sources found using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) telescope. These sources span a dispersion measure ...(DM) range of 103.5-1281 pc cm−3. They display varying degrees of activity: six sources were detected twice, another three times, and one 10 times. These eight repeating FRBs likely represent the bright and/or high-rate end of a distribution of infrequently repeating sources. For all sources, we determine sky coordinates with uncertainties of ∼10′. FRB 180916.J0158+65 has a burst-averaged DM = 349.2 0.3 pc cm−3 and a low DM excess over the modeled Galactic maximum (as low as ∼20 pc cm−3); this source also has a Faraday rotation measure (RM) of −114.6 0.6 rad m−2, which is much lower than the RM measured for FRB 121102. FRB 181030.J1054+73 has the lowest DM for a repeater, 103.5 0.3 pc cm−3, with a DM excess of ∼70 pc cm−3. Both sources are interesting targets for multi-wavelength follow-up due to their apparent proximity. The DM distribution of our repeater sample is statistically indistinguishable from that of the first 12 CHIME/FRB sources that have not yet repeated. We find, with 4 significance, that repeater bursts are generally wider than those of CHIME/FRB bursts that have not repeated, suggesting different emission mechanisms. Many of our repeater events show complex morphologies that are reminiscent of the first two discovered repeating FRBs. The repetitive behavior of these sources will enable interferometric localizations and subsequent host galaxy identifications.
We report on the discovery and analysis of bursts from nine new repeating fast radio burst (FRB) sources found using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) telescope. These ...sources span a dispersion measure (DM) range of 195-1380 pc cm−3. We detect two bursts from three of the new sources, three bursts from four of the new sources, four bursts from one new source, and five bursts from one new source. We determine sky coordinates of all sources with uncertainties of ∼10′. We detect Faraday rotation measures (RMs) for two sources, with values −20(1) and −499.8(7) rad m−2, that are substantially lower than the RM derived from bursts emitted by FRB 121102. We find that the DM distribution of our events, combined with the nine other repeaters discovered by CHIME/FRB, is indistinguishable from that of thus far non-repeating CHIME/FRB events. However, as previously reported, the burst widths appear statistically significantly larger than the thus far non-repeating CHIME/FRB events, further supporting the notion of inherently different emission mechanisms and/or local environments. These results are consistent with previous work, though are now derived from 18 repeating sources discovered by CHIME/FRB during its first year of operation. We identify candidate galaxies that may contain FRB 190303.J1353+48 (DM = 222.4 pc cm−3).
In a search for radio pulsations from the magnetar 1E 1841-045, we have discovered the unrelated pulsar J1841-0500, with rotation period P = 0.9 s and characteristic age 0.4 Myr. One year after ...discovery with the Parkes telescope at 3 GHz, radio emission ceased from this bright pulsar. After 580 days, emission resumed as before. The P during both on states is 250% of the average in the off state. PSR J1841-0500 is a second example of an extremely intermittent pulsar, although with a much longer off period and larger ratio of spin-down rates than PSR B1931+24. The new pulsar is hugely scattered by the interstellar medium, with a fitted timescale referenced to 1 GHz of tau sub(1) = 2 s. Based on polarimetric observations at 5 GHz with the Green Bank Telescope, the intrinsic pulse profile has not obviously changed between the two on states observed so far, although relatively small variations cannot be excluded. The magnitude of its rotation measure is the largest known, RM = -3000 rad m super(-2), and with a dispersion measure DM = 532 pc cm super(-3) implies a large electron-weighted average magnetic field strength along the line of sight, 7 mu G.
In the last few years, over 43 millisecond radio pulsars have been discovered by targeted searches of unidentified gamma -ray sources found by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. A large fraction of ...these millisecond pulsars are in compact binaries with low-mass companions. These systems often show eclipses of the pulsar signal and are commonly known as black widows and redbacks because the pulsar is gradually destroying its companion. In this paper, we report on the optical discovery of four strongly irradiated millisecond pulsar companions. All four sources show modulations of their color and luminosity at the known orbital periods from radio timing. Light curve modeling of our exploratory data shows that the equilibrium temperature reached on the companion's dayside with respect to their nightside is consistent with about 10%-30% of the available spin-down energy from the pulsar being reprocessed to increase the companion's dayside temperature. This value compares well with the range observed in other irradiated pulsar binaries and offers insights about the energetics of the pulsar wind and the production of gamma -ray emission. In addition, this provides a simple way of estimating the brightness of irradiated pulsar companions given the pulsar spin-down luminosity. Our analysis also suggests that two of the four new irradiated pulsar companions are only partially filling their Roche lobe. Some of these sources are relatively bright and represent good targets for spectroscopic follow-up. These measurements could enable, among other things, mass determination of the neutron stars in these systems.
We search for an isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background (GWB) in the newly released 11 year data set from the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). ...While we find no evidence for a GWB, we place constraints on a population of inspiraling supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries, a network of decaying cosmic strings, and a primordial GWB. For the first time, we find that the GWB constraints are sensitive to the solar system ephemeris (SSE) model used and that SSE errors can mimic a GWB signal. We developed an approach that bridges systematic SSE differences, producing the first pulsar-timing array (PTA) constraints that are robust against SSE errors. We thus place a 95% upper limit on the GW-strain amplitude of AGWB < 1.45 × 10−15 at a frequency of f = 1 yr−1 for a fiducial f−2/3 power-law spectrum and with interpulsar correlations modeled. This is a factor of ∼2 improvement over the NANOGrav nine-year limit calculated using the same procedure. Previous PTA upper limits on the GWB (as well as their astrophysical and cosmological interpretations) will need revision in light of SSE systematic errors. We use our constraints to characterize the combined influence on the GWB of the stellar mass density in galactic cores, the eccentricity of SMBH binaries, and SMBH-galactic-bulge scaling relationships. We constrain the cosmic-string tension using recent simulations, yielding an SSE-marginalized 95% upper limit of G < 5.3 × 10−11-a factor of ∼2 better than the published NANOGrav nine-year constraints. Our SSE-marginalized 95% upper limit on the energy density of a primordial GWB (for a radiation-dominated post-inflation universe) is GWB(f) h2 < 3.4 × 10−10.
We describe an ongoing search for pulsars and dispersed pulses of radio emission, such as those from rotating radio transients (RRATs) and fast radio bursts, at 350 MHz using the Green Bank ...Telescope. With the Green Bank Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrument, we record 100 MHz of bandwidth divided into 4096 channels every 81.92 mu s. This survey will cover the entire sky visible to the Green Bank Telescope ( delta > -40degrees, or 82% of the sky) and outside of the Galactic Plane will be sensitive enough to detect slow pulsars and low dispersion measure (<30 pc cm super(-3)) millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with a 0.08 duty cycle down to 1.1 mJy. For pulsars with a spectral index of -1.6, we will be 2.5 times more sensitive than previous and ongoing surveys over much of our survey region. Here we describe the survey, the data analysis pipeline, initial discovery parameters for 62 pulsars, and timing solutions for 5 new pulsars. PSR J0214 + 5222 is an MSP in a long-period (512 days) orbit and has an optical counterpart identified in archival data. PSR J0636 + 5129 is an MSP in a very short-period (96 minutes) orbit with a very low mass companion (8 M sub(J)). PSR J0645 + 5158 is an isolated MSP with a timing residual RMS of 500 ns and has been added to pulsar timing array experiments. PSR J1434 + 7257 is an isolated, intermediate-period pulsar that has been partially recycled. PSR J1816 + 4510 is an eclipsing MSP in a short-period orbit (8.7 hr) and may have recently completed its spin-up phase.
The Green Bank North Celestial Cap (GBNCC) pulsar survey will cover the entire northern sky (δ > −40°) at 350 MHz, and is one of the most uniform and sensitive all-sky pulsar surveys to date. We have ...created a pipeline to reanalyze GBNCC survey data to take a 350 MHz census of all pulsars detected by the survey, regardless of their discovery survey. Of the 1413 pulsars in the survey region, we were able to recover 670. For these we present measured signal-to-noise ratios (S/N), flux densities, pulse widths, profiles, and where appropriate, refined measurements of dispersion measures (DMs) (656 out of 670) and new or improved spectral indices (339 out of 670 total, 47 new, 292 improved). We also measure the period-pulse width relation at 350 MHz to scale as . Detection scans for several hundred sources were reanalyzed in order to inspect pulsars' single pulse behavior and 223 were found to exhibit evidence of nulling. With a detailed analysis of measured and expected S/N values and the evolving radio frequency interference environment at 350 MHz, we assess the GBNCC survey's sensitivity as a function of spin period, DM, and sky position. We find the sky-averaged limiting flux density of the survey to be 0.74 mJy. Combining this analysis with PsrPopPy pulsar population simulations, we predict 60/5 nonrecycled/MSP discoveries in the survey's remaining 21,000 pointings, and we begin to place constraints on population model parameters.

. ...Using the Green Bank Telescope, we have detected radio pulsations from PSR J1813−1749 at 4.4–10.2 GHz. The pulse is highly scattered, with an exponential decay timescale

longer than that of any other pulsar at these frequencies. A point source detected at this position by Dzib et al. in several observations with the Jansky Very Large Array can be attributed to the pulsed emission. The steep dependence of
τ
on observing frequency explains why all previous pulsation searches at lower frequencies failed (
τ
≈ 0.25 s at 2 GHz). The large dispersion measure, DM = 1087 pc cm
−3
, indicates a distance of either 6.2 or 12 kpc according to two widely used models of the electron density distribution in the Galaxy. These disfavor a previously suggested association with a young stellar cluster at the closer distance of 4.8 kpc. The high X-ray measured column density of ≈10

cm
−2
also supports a large distance. If
d
≈ 12 kpc, HESS J1813−178 would be one of the most luminous TeV sources in the Galaxy.
We searched for radio pulsars in 25 of the non-variable, unassociated sources in the Fermi LAT Bright Source List with the Green Bank Telescope at 820 MHz. We report the discovery of three radio and ...Delta *g-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from a high Galactic latitude subset of these sources. All of the pulsars are in binary systems, which would have made them virtually impossible to detect in blind Delta *g-ray pulsation searches. They seem to be relatively normal, nearby (<=2 kpc) MSPs. These observations, in combination with the Fermi detection of Delta *g-rays from other known radio MSPs, imply that most, if not all, radio MSPs are efficient Delta *g-ray producers. The Delta *g-ray spectra of the pulsars are power law in nature with exponential cutoffs at a few GeV, as has been found with most other pulsars. The MSPs have all been detected as X-ray point sources. Their soft X-ray luminosities of ~1030-1031 erg s--1 are typical of the rare radio MSPs seen in X-rays.
