In the United States, lactation milk yields are not measured directly but are calculated from the test-day milk yields. Still, test-day milk yields are estimated from partial yields obtained from ...single milkings. Various methods have been proposed to estimate test-day milk yields, primarily to deal with unequal milking intervals dating back to the 1970s and 1980s. The Wiggans model is a de facto method for estimating test-day milk yields in the United States, which was initially proposed for cows milked 3 times daily, assuming a linear relationship between a proportional test-day milk yield and milking interval. However, the linearity assumption did not hold precisely in Holstein cows milked twice daily because of prolonged and uneven milking intervals. The present study reviewed and evaluated the nonlinear models that extended the Wiggans model for estimating daily or test-day milk yields. These nonlinear models, except step functions, demonstrated smaller errors and greater accuracies for estimated test-day milk yields compared with the conventional methods. The nonlinear models offered additional benefits. For example, the locally weighted regression model (e.g., locally estimated scatterplot smoothing) could utilize data information in scalable neighborhoods and weigh observations according to their distance in milking interval time. General additive models provide a flexible, unified framework to model nonlinear predictor variables additively. Another drawback of the conventional methods is a loss of accuracy caused by discretizing milking interval time into large bins while deriving multiplicative correction factors for estimating test-day milk yields. To overcome this problem, we proposed a general approach that allows milk yield correction factors to be derived for every possible milking interval time, resulting in more accurately estimated test-day milk yields. This approach can be applied to any model, including nonparametric models.
Globular star clusters are compact and massive stellar systems old enough to have witnessed the entire history of our Galaxy, the Milky Way. Although recent results suggest that their formation may ...have been more complex than previously thought, they still are the best approximation to a stellar population formed over a relatively short time scale (less than 1 Gyr) and with virtually no dispersion in the iron content. Indeed, only one cluster-like system (omega Centauri) in the Galactic halo is known to have multiple stellar populations with a significant spread in iron abundance and age4,5. Similar findings in the Galactic bulge have been hampered by the obscuration arising from thick and varying layers of interstellar dust. Here we report that Terzan 5, a globular-cluster-like system in the Galactic bulge, has two stellar populations with different iron content and ages. Terzan 5 could be the surviving remnant of one of the primordial building blocks that are thought to merge and form galaxy bulges.
We report the detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from the fast millisecond pulsars (MSPs) B1937+21 (also known as J1939+2134) and B1957+20 (J1959+2048) using 18 months of survey data recorded by ...the \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT) and timing solutions based on radio observations conducted at the Westerbork and Nançay radio telescopes. In addition, we analyzed archival \emph{RXTE} and \emph{XMM-Newton} X-ray data for the two MSPs, confirming the X-ray emission properties of PSR B1937+21 and finding evidence (\(\sim 4\sigma\)) for pulsed emission from PSR B1957+20 for the first time. In both cases the gamma-ray emission profile is characterized by two peaks separated by half a rotation and are in close alignment with components observed in radio and X-rays. These two pulsars join PSRs J0034-0534 and J2214+3000 to form an emerging class of gamma-ray MSPs with phase-aligned peaks in different energy bands. The modeling of the radio and gamma-ray emission profiles suggests co-located emission regions in the outer magnetosphere.
Over the past decade, the discovery of three unique stellar populations and a large number of confirmed pulsars within the globular cluster Terzan 5 has raised questions over its classification. ...Using the long-term radio pulsar timing of ms pulsars in the cluster core, we provide new measurements of key physical properties of the system. As Terzan 5 is located within the galactic bulge, stellar crowding and reddening make optical and near-infrared observations difficult. Pulsar accelerations, however, allow us to study the intrinsic characteristics of the cluster independent of reddening and stellar crowding and probe the mass density profile without needing to quantify the mass-to-light ratio. Relating the spin and orbital periods of each pulsar to the acceleration predicted by a King model, we find a core density of × 106 pc−3, a core radius of pc, a pulsar density profile of , and a total mass of ( pc) 3.0 × 105 , assuming a cluster distance of 5.9 kpc. Using this information, we argue against Terzan 5 being a disrupted dwarf galaxy and discuss the possibility of it being a fragment of the Milky Way's proto-bulge. We also discuss whether low-mass pulsars were formed via electron-capture supernovae or exist in a core full of heavy white dwarfs and hard binaries. Finally, we provide an upper limit for the mass of a possible black hole at the core of the cluster of .

Durum producers face a range of factors spanning abiotic (frost damage, drought, and sprouting) and biotic (weed, disease, and insect pests) stresses that impact yields and quality specifications desired by export market end-users. Serious biotic threats include Fusarium head blight (FHB) and weed pest pressures, which have increased as a result of herbicide resistance. While genetic progress for yield and quality is on pace with common wheat (
Triticum aestivum
L.), development of resistant durum cultivars to FHB is still lagging. Thus, successful biotic and abiotic threat mitigation are ideal case studies in Genotype (G) × Environment (E) × Management (M) interactions where superior cultivars (G) are grown in at-risk regions (E) and require unique approaches to management (M) for sustainable durum production. Transformational approaches to research are needed in order for agronomists, breeders and durum producers to overcome production constraints. Designing robust agronomic systems for durum demands scientific creativity and foresight based on a deep understanding of constitutive components and their innumerable interactions with each other and the environment. This encompasses development of durum production systems that suit specific agro-ecozones and close the yield gap between genetic potential and on-farm achieved yield. Advances in individual technologies (e.g., genetic improvements, new pesticides, seeding technologies) are of little benefit until they are melded into resilient G × E × M systems that will flourish in the field under unpredictable conditions of prairie farmlands. We explore how recent genetic progress and selected management innovations can lead to a resilient and transformative durum production system.
We report the discovery of the 20.7 ms binary pulsar J1952+2630, made using the distributed computing project Einstein@Home in Pulsar ALFA survey observations with the Arecibo telescope. Follow-up ...observations with the Arecibo telescope confirm the binary nature of the system. We obtain a circular orbital solution with an orbital period of 9.4 hr, a projected orbital radius of 2.8 lt-s, and a mass function of f = 0.15 solar masses by analysis of spin period measurements. No evidence of orbital eccentricity is apparent; we set a 2-sigma upper limit e < 1.7e-3. The orbital parameters suggest a massive white dwarf companion with a minimum mass of 0.95 solar masses, assuming a pulsar mass of 1.4 solar masses. Most likely, this pulsar belongs to the rare class of intermediate mass binary pulsars. Future timing observations will aim to determine the parameters of this system further, measure relativistic effects, and elucidate the nature of the companion star.
Fluorescent proteins are powerful reporters in biology, but most require O2 for chromophore maturation, making them inherently difficult to use in anaerobic bacteria. Clostridium difficile, a strict ...anaerobe with a genomic GC content of only 29%, is the leading cause of hospital-acquired diarrhea in developed countries, and new methods for studying this pathogen are sorely needed. We recently demonstrated that a cyan fluorescent protein called CFPopt that has been codon optimized for production in low-GC bacteria can be used to study protein localization in C. difficile provided the cells are fixed prior to exposure to air. We describe here a codon-optimized variant of mCherry (mCherryOpt) that exhibits faster acquisition of fluorescence and a better signal-to-noise ratio than CFPopt. We utilized mCherryOpt to construct plasmids for studying protein localization (pRAN473) and gene expression (pDSW1728) in C. difficile. Plasmid pRAN473 is an mCherryOpt fusion vector with a tetracycline-inducible promoter. To document its biological utility, we demonstrated septal localization of two cell division proteins, MldA and ZapA. Plasmid pDSW1728 is designed for cloning a promoter of interest upstream of mCherryOpt. As proof of principle, we studied the expression of the pdaV operon, which is required for lysozyme resistance. In confirmation and extension of previous reports, we found that expression of the pdaV operon requires the alternative sigma factor σ(v) and that induction by lysozyme is dose dependent and uniform across the population of lysozyme-treated cells.
We describe a comprehensive pulsar monitoring campaign for the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the {\em Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope} (formerly GLAST). The detection and study of pulsars in gamma ...rays give insights into the populations of neutron stars and supernova rates in the Galaxy, into particle acceleration mechanisms in neutron star magnetospheres, and into the "engines" driving pulsar wind nebulae. LAT's unprecedented sensitivity between 20 MeV and 300 GeV together with its 2.4 sr field-of-view makes detection of many gamma-ray pulsars likely, justifying the monitoring of over two hundred pulsars with large spin-down powers. To search for gamma-ray pulsations from most of these pulsars requires a set of phase-connected timing solutions spanning a year or more to properly align the sparse photon arrival times. We describe the choice of pulsars and the instruments involved in the campaign. Attention is paid to verifications of the LAT pulsar software, using for example giant radio pulses from the Crab and from PSR B1937+21 recorded at Nançay, and using X-ray data on PSR J0218+4232 from XMM-Newton. We demonstrate accuracy of the pulsar phase calculations at the microsecond level. (abridged) PSR J1903+0327, a millisecond pulsar in an eccentric (e = 0.44) 95-day orbit with a (~ 1Msun) companion poses a challenge to our understanding of stellar evolution in binary and ...multiple-star systems. Here we describe optical and radio observations which rule out most of the scenarios proposed to explain formation of this system. Radio timing measurements of three post-Keplerian effects yield the most precise measurement of the mass of a millisecond pulsar to date: 1.667 +/- 0.021 solar masses (99.7% confidence limit) (...). Optical spectroscopy of a proposed main sequence counterpart show that its orbital motion mirrors the pulsar's 95-day orbit; being therefore its binary companion (...) The optical detection also provides a measurement of the systemic radial velocity of the binary; this and the proper motion measured from pulsar timing allow the determination of the systemic 3-D velocity in the Galaxy. We find that the system is always within 270 pc of the plane of the Galaxy, but always more than 3 kpc away from the Galactic centre. Thus an exchange interaction in a dense stellar environment (like a globular cluster or the Galactic centre) is not likely to be the origin of this system. We suggest that after the supernova that formed it, the neutron star was in a tight orbit with a main-sequence star, the present companion was a tertiary farther out. The neutron star then accreted matter from its evolving inner MS companion, forming a millisecond pulsar. The former donor star then disappears, either due to a chaotic 3-body interaction with the outer star (caused by the expansion of the inner orbit that necessarily results from mass transfer), or in the case of a very compact inner system, due to ablation/accretion by the newly formed millisecond pulsar.
