•A 2E-LR problem for designing recycling network is presented.•MILP model with profit and distance dependent collection rate.•Efficient heuristics to solve large problem instances is developed.
This ...paper presents a mathematical formulation of a two-echelon location-routing problem in case of non-hazardous recyclables collection with a profit and distance dependent collection rate. The proposed model simultaneously determines collection points' locations respecting the dependency of collected recyclables’ quantities on the distance between end users and collection points, the location of intermediate consolidation points (transfer stations) and routing of collection vehicles. For solving large problem instances, we have developed heuristics for obtaining good solutions in reasonable time. We tested our approach for different system parameters in order to get better insight into the system performance.
•We consider the dynamic multisize multi-trailer container drayage problem.•The problem is mathematically formulated as MILP.•We propose heuristic algorithm based on the VNS metaheuristic ...framework.•Numerical results show effectiveness of proposed algorithms.•We tested effects of different rolling horizon parameters and strategies.
We consider the multisize multi-trailer drayage problem in which dynamism is treated by the re-optimization concept. Information on vehicles' current positions and their distances to all task locations are available in real-time. All vehicles in the fleet can be of longer combination sizes. The results of this study provide an efficient solution approach for solving real-size problem instances in a dynamic surrounding of container drayage processes. The solving approach is based on the implementation of a variable neighborhood search based heuristic algorithm. The testing results confirmed the benefits of using longer combination size vehicles by indicating potential reductions in overall traveled distances for up to approximately 30%, and in a total number of required trips for up to approximately 40%. Eventually, we tested the effects of implementing an assignment strategy in which an active task can be taken away from the assigned vehicle before it starts container (un)loading at the task's premise. That strategy proved to reduce tasks' lateness aspect of the problem but on the cost of increased traveling distances.
This article presents a bi-objective mixed-integer linear model for the waste management system design. Two types of facilities, landfills and transfer stations (TSs), are identified based on two ...objectives: minimising the total system’s costs and the total negative impact of located facilities on end users as waste generators through a defined pollution decay function. Landfills and TSs are categorised as undesirable facilities due to associated environmental risks. In this article undesirability of a located facility is defined as a two-threshold linear decreasing function of the distance between the end users and the located facility. Also, we considered additional restrictions that no two selected landfills or TSs are within a pre-specified distance from each other, limiting the superimposed pollution generated in these facilities. The model performances are tested on a real-scale example for Vojvodina (Serbia). Results showed that the proposed model has potentials and can be beneficial for government organisations, local authorities and other organisations related to waste management issues.
