The hybrids UENF N01, N02 and N03 have enhanced nitrogen-use efficiency, particularly in terms of N responsiveness, which makes them ideal for low-input cultivation. Even under abiotic stress, ...popping expansion is not reduced, indicating these hybrids for growth in the N and NW of Rio de Janeiro State.
Endosymbiont-bearing trypanosomatids have been considered excellent models for the study of cell evolution because the host protozoan co-evolves with an intracellular bacterium in a mutualistic ...relationship. Such protozoa inhabit a single invertebrate host during their entire life cycle and exhibit special characteristics that group them in a particular phylogenetic cluster of the Trypanosomatidae family, thus classified as monoxenics. In an effort to better understand such symbiotic association, we used DNA pyrosequencing and a reference-guided assembly to generate reads that predicted 16,960 and 12,162 open reading frames (ORFs) in two symbiont-bearing trypanosomatids, Angomonas deanei (previously named as Crithidia deanei) and Strigomonas culicis (first known as Blastocrithidia culicis), respectively. Identification of each ORF was based primarily on TriTrypDB using tblastn, and each ORF was confirmed by employing getorf from EMBOSS and Newbler 2.6 when necessary. The monoxenic organisms revealed conserved housekeeping functions when compared to other trypanosomatids, especially compared with Leishmania major. However, major differences were found in ORFs corresponding to the cytoskeleton, the kinetoplast, and the paraflagellar structure. The monoxenic organisms also contain a large number of genes for cytosolic calpain-like and surface gp63 metalloproteases and a reduced number of compartmentalized cysteine proteases in comparison to other TriTryp organisms, reflecting adaptations to the presence of the symbiont. The assembled bacterial endosymbiont sequences exhibit a high A+T content with a total of 787 and 769 ORFs for the Angomonas deanei and Strigomonas culicis endosymbionts, respectively, and indicate that these organisms hold a common ancestor related to the Alcaligenaceae family. Importantly, both symbionts contain enzymes that complement essential host cell biosynthetic pathways, such as those for amino acid, lipid and purine/pyrimidine metabolism. These findings increase our understanding of the intricate symbiotic relationship between the bacterium and the trypanosomatid host and provide clues to better understand eukaryotic cell evolution.
The first cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Brazil were diagnosed in February 2020. Our Emergency Department (ED) was designated as a COVID-19 exclusive service. We report our first 500 ...confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia patients.
From 14 March to 16 May 2020, we enrolled all patients admitted to our ED that had a diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. Infection was confirmed via nasopharyngeal swabs or tracheal aspirate PCR. The outcomes included hospital discharge, invasive mechanical ventilation, and in-hospital death, among others.
From 2219 patients received in the ED, we included 506 with confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia. We found that 333 patients were discharged home (65.9%), 153 died (30.2%), and 20 (3.9%) remained in the hospital. A total of 300 patients (59.3%) required ICU admission, and 227 (44.9%) needed invasive ventilation. The multivariate analysis found age, number of comorbidities, extension of ground glass opacities on chest CT and troponin with a direct relationship with all-cause mortality, whereas dysgeusia, use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin-ii receptor blocker and number of lymphocytes with an inverse relationship with all-cause mortality.
This was a sample of severe patients with COVID-19, with 59.2% admitted to the ICU and 41.5% requiring mechanical ventilator support. We were able to ascertain the outcome in majority (96%) of patients. While the overall mortality was 30.2%, mortality for intubated patients was 55.9%. Multivariate analysis agreed with data found in other studies although the use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin-ii receptor blocker as a protective factor could be promising but would need further studies.
The study was registered in the Brazilian registry of clinical trials: RBR-5d4dj5.
In this work, the impact of the doping process on the photoluminescence emission of CaWO4 as a function of the concentration of Eu3+ cation (0.01 mol%, 0.02 mol%, 0.04 mol%, 0.06 mol%, 0.08 mol%, and ...0.10 mol%) is discussed in detail. Ca1−xWO4:xEu3+ samples were successfully synthesized by a simple co-precipitation method followed by microwave irradiation. The blue shift in the absorption edge confirms the quantum confinement effect and the band gap energy covers the range from 3.91 to 4.18 eV, as the amount of Eu3+ cations increases. The experimental results are sustained by first-principles calculations, at the density functional theory level, to decipher the geometry and electronic properties, thereby enabling a more accurate and direct comparison between theory and experiment for the Ca1−xWO4:xEu3+ structure.
The impact of the doping process on the photoluminescence emission of CaWO4 as a function of the concentration of Eu3+ cation is discussed in detail, and first-principles calculations endorsed the experimental results. Display omitted
(1) Introduction: Studies on respiratory muscle strength (RMS) in adolescents are controversial. Few studies so far have investigated respiratory muscle strength in Brazilian adolescents and the ...impact of body composition on it. (2) Objective: to evaluate the respiratory muscle strength of Brazilian adolescents and compare this with nationally and internationally predicted normality values. (3) Method: A cross-sectional study (CAEE: 34634414.5.0000.5479) was carried out with 98 adolescents, where both sexes were divided into four groups: eutrophic (n = 44); overweight (n = 15), obese (n = 25), and severely obese (n = 14). All were submitted to an anthropometric assessment, body composition analysis and manovacuometry. To interpret the results, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with Turkey’s post hoc test was used. The Kruskal–Wallis test and Friedman’s post hoc test were used to compare the observed vs. proposed results. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. (4) Results: There were no differences among the groups for maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressures. However, when considering the total sample, we could say that RMS was higher among boys, and there were no significant differences in RMS in relation to the maturational stage. The values obtained for MIP were lower than those suggested for the national equation and higher than those proposed for the international equation. Similarly, the values obtained for MEP were lower than those suggested for the national and international equation. (5) Conclusions: RMS was similar in adolescents with different body compositions and different maturation stages. Adiposity did not interfere with RMS in adolescents. Boys had higher MIP and MEP values compared to girls. Therefore, the reference values proposed by the equations do not consistently match RMS in the adolescents studied. This context reinforces the need for new studies that are related to RMS to establish normality values and propose equations that represent the youth population.
The pied tamarin, or
Saguinus bicolor
, is a callitrichid that inhabits Amazon Forest fragments encased within the municipalities of Manaus, Rio Preto da Eva, and Itacoatiara and their outskirts. ...Therefore, this primate lives in great proximity to humans, and is in critical danger of extinction, resulting from ongoing anthropogenic pressures, with habitat fragmentation being the most prominent threat. Greater conservation efforts and more studies concerning public health need to be carried out in this situation, such as the study of infectious diseases that can affect this primate, including those involving helminths. In this study, we combined necropsy, microscopy with blood smears and quick Panoptic stains, and molecular methods like nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS-1) region, Sanger sequencing and shotgun sequencing to detect and identify filarial parasites in 71
S. bicolor
samples. We detected 24 adult filarial worms in 6.45% of the thoracic cavities, microfilaria in 6.38% from blood smears, and filarial DNA in 28.57% positive blood samples via PCR. We identified eight of the adult worms as being from the Onchocercidae family using Sanger sequencing and one specifically as Dipetalonema gracile, using shotgun sequencing. For the positive blood samples, 70.58% of them were for Mansonella sp., 17.64% for
Dipetalonema
sp., and 11.76% could only be identified as belonging to the Onchocercidae family. There was an event of coinfection that involved
Dipetalonema
sp. adult worm and
Mansonella
sp. microfilaria. This is the first report of the detection of
Dipetalonema gracile
and the genus
Mansonella
in
S. bicolor
, as well as an event of coinfection, pointing out this primate as a new host. It is also another step to understand the situation of filarial infections occurring in Amazonian Regions and its municipalities.

The study and characterization of leaf venation plays a key role in the recognition of taxonomic groups that have been identified mainly based on reproductive traits. This study aimed at ...characterizing the pattern of leaf venation of Rubiaceae, recognizing individual characters among the taxa of this group and testing the use of leaf architecture as a taxonomic tool capable of providing vegetative and diagnostically characteristics between species. Leaves of 14 species distributed in eight genera from Rubiaceae were diaphanized and classified. The study area is located in Área de Proteção Ambiental Serra Branca/Raso da Catarina, Bahia State, Brazil. The characterization of secondary veins, including type, spacing and number of pairs, third veining patterns, fourth and fifth order, and the conformation of the areola were useful to delimit taxa when used together, providing subsidies to more comprehensive studies.
