We show that confinement in the quantum Ising model leads to nonthermal eigenstates, in both continuum and lattice theories, in both one (1D) and two dimensions (2D). In the ordered phase, the ...presence of a confining longitudinal field leads to a profound restructuring of the excitation spectrum, with the low-energy two-particle continuum being replaced by discrete "meson" modes (linearly confined pairs of domain walls). These modes exist far into the spectrum and are atypical, in the sense that expectation values in the state with energy E do not agree with the microcanonical (thermal) ensemble prediction. Single meson states persist above the two-meson threshold due to a surprising lack of hybridization with the (n≥4)-domain wall continuum, a result that survives into the thermodynamic limit and that can be understood from analytical calculations. The presence of such states is revealed in anomalous postquench dynamics, such as the lack of a light cone, the suppression of the growth of entanglement entropy, and the absence of thermalization for some initial states. The nonthermal states are confined to the ordered phase-the disordered (paramagnetic) phase exhibits typical thermalization patterns in both 1D and 2D in the absence of integrability.

When discussing entrepreneurial behavior, TED-talker Jessica Jackley knows from whence she speaks. She's cofounded many altruistic organizations and has specialized in creating opportunities globally ...for those who generally find opportunities elusive. Living and dying by prioritization: It is a philosophy that has become essential to TMS as our leaders have worked hard over the last year to mindfully calibrate our aspirations with our capabilities. Historically, TMS has pursued numerous initiatives with a vigor that led us to realize many meaningful outcomes. In short: We have ingenuity, enthusiasm, and resources, so let's do it! One of the painful learnings of the pandemic era, however, is that seemingly plentiful resources can evaporate quickly when revenue streams are disrupted. Post-pandemic, we find it necessary to be more deliberative even as our ideas keep coming. Recognizing the need to prioritize, the Board of Directors adopted at TMS2023 a process for ranking our inventory of initiatives so that mission-critical projects were slotted to the top while promising--but less critical-initiatives were positioned into secondary or tertiary slots.

The periodical printing business is declining as people increasingly rely on digital devices for accessing content. TMS, a scholarly publisher, has been delivering journal content digitally since ...before the internet era. They have conducted experiments with web and multimedia components in their publications. Previously, only one TMS periodical, JOM, was printed and mailed to members for free, but now all TMS journal articles are accessible for free thanks to a partnership with Springer Nature. Despite the digital options available, TMS recognizes the value of print publishing in capturing attention and separating their message from online noise. They have made changes to their print delivery, including ceasing the printing and mailing of the thick JOM publication, and now only mailing the compact Magazine section to members. The remaining Magazine sections are available exclusively online.

The TMS Board of Directors recently adopted the TMS Position Statement on Climate Change. The statement begins, "Climate change is a critical global challenge that poses an existential threat to ...humanity and the planet," and it concedes that the TMS community "has had a role in legacy extraction, processing, and manufacturing methods that directly and indirectly contributed to historical greenhouse gas emissions." That same profession can nonetheless be part of the solution as the TMS community "continues to pursue more sustainable methods that can be implemented today and in the future." Here, Robinson discusses ways that the TMS community can solve this problem.

Beyond a quote, do people really need to know anything more about last March's TMS2023 to declare it a success? One of the 4,499 attendees inflated Robinson's ego, so "Victory!" His reliably ...ego-deflating conscience says, "Hang on a minute Mr. Executive Director. Your self-esteem should be very low." Okay, okay. Here, he looks at some less Jim-a-ta-tive and more quantitative numbers as to how well TMS did in convening and serving the materials community in a surprisingly cool and soggy San Diego CA can do.
The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) is a 10-item self-report measure of 2 emotion regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. It is a widely used measure of ...emotion regulation, but its factor structure has rarely been examined outside of university student samples, and some authors have recently questioned its factorial validity in general community samples. In this study, we examine the psychometric properties of the ERQ (original English version) in 3 Australian general community samples (N = 300, 400, 348). Confirmatory factor analyses in each sample demonstrated that the traditional 2-factor model (comprised of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression factors) was replicable and an excellent fit to the data. In all samples, ERQ cognitive reappraisal (α = .89-.90) and expressive suppression (α = .76-.80) scores had acceptable to excellent levels of internal consistency reliability. As expected, cognitive reappraisal scores were significantly negatively correlated with psychological distress and alexithymia, whereas expressive suppression scores were significantly positively correlated with psychological distress and alexithymia. We conclude that, similar to previous findings in student samples, the ERQ has strong psychometric properties in general community samples and can therefore be used confidently regardless of participants' student status.

The year 2022 was the year in which the impacts of the pandemic accumulated to the point that the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society could no longer lean into the philosophy of "waiting out the ...pandemic." Anticipating recovery sooner than it came, many had maintained full operating capacity, gone full speed in service of existing initiatives, and continued to undertake new initiatives. By Oct 2022, their events business was only sluggishly returning to normal losses mounted and a significant operating deficit became inevitable for 2022, and a sizeable one was looming for 2023. The Board's guidance? Cease maintaining operating capacity as if "normal" was to return in 2023 and instead govern from the perspective of developing a 2023 operating budget that would have a much-reduced deficit and that 2024 be either breakeven or generate a surplus. The reduction in the planned 2023 operating deficit was achieved by restructuring staff, renegotiating the headquarters lease to reduce the amount of office space required, and employing other cost-cutting/revenue-boosting tactics.

Robinson talks about the ChatGPT. The OpenAI website describes the tool as follows: "We've trained a model called ChatGPT which interacts in a conversational way. The dialogue format makes it ...possible for ChatGPT to answer follow up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests." He asserts that he prefers the human touch, but reminiscent of John Henry competing against a steam-powered drill it seems very likely that Als integration into our work and leisure activities will continue its encompassing ascend. We don't have to ask ChatGPT to read the writing on the wall.

For most of its history, TMS has enjoyed steady prosperity, albeit occasionally spiced with character-building adversity such as intermittent missteps, wince-worthy decisions, and outright ...donnybrooks. Despite such situational adversity, the Society's performance trendlines have been positive and up-curving. Decade after decade, TMS has consistently and successfully pursued its nobler aspirations, provided meaningful platforms to advance science and technology, and applied its reputation and influence in service of the global materials community. Here, Robinson discusses the efforts of TMS volunteers and staff.

When it comes to publishing periodicals, the gradual phase out of printing is ongoing and inevitable. For reasons both professional and personal, that makes Robinson wistful. His feelings aside, ...e-content delivery is just too convenient, too searchable, too immediate, too aggregated, and too scrollable to resist. What people miss, however, is the sheer tactility of paper in hand. A magazine invites you to study the cover, thumb its pages, and allow your eyes to linger on an intriguing headline, article, or image. Time was that every manner of periodical cascaded from newsstands; now, they are selective boutique experiences where one enjoys not only the content but also the physicality of the manner in which that content is presented. Within TMS, they are very attuned to the present and future of periodical publishing. They must be as TMS publishes six journals. From that portfolio, every article from every issue of every periodical is available to every TMS member via SpringerLink at no extra cost.
