Microbiological contamination in the food industry is often attributed to the presence of biofilms in processing plants. Bacterial biofilms are complex communities of bacteria attached to a surface ...and surrounded by an extracellular polymeric material. Their extreme resistance to cleaning and disinfecting processes is related to a unique organization, which implies a differential bacterial growth and gene expression inside the biofilm. The impact of biofilms on health, and the economic consequences, has promoted the development of different approaches to control or remove biofilm formation. Recently, successful results in phage therapy have boosted new research in bacteriophages and phage lytic proteins for biofilm eradication. In this regard, this review examines the environmental factors that determine biofilm development in food-processing equipment. In addition, future perspectives for the use of bacteriophage-derived tools as disinfectants are discussed.
Response to antidepressants is related to hippocampal neurogenesis integrity, a process mediated by neurotrophins, such as Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). In turn, pro-inflammatory state ...appears to reduce neurogenesis, and has been associated with refractory depressive states. We propose to analyze the human neural progenitor cells derived from the olfactory epithelium (HNPCs-OE) as an indicator of neurogenesis in humans. Therefore, we compared the number and content of HNPCs-OE in depressed patients taking antidepressants, according to response to treatment. Twenty depressed patients were followed during eight weeks after antidepressant treatment was prescribed. At the end evaluation they were divided in two groups according to Hamilton depression rating scale (HDRS) scores: responders and non-responders. We compared the number and components of HNPCs-OE between groups and observed an elevation of interleukine-8 in those patients who do not achieve response to treatment, BDNF levels were no related to antidepressant response.

This article includes an updated review of the classification, uses and side effects of surfactants for their application in the cosmetic, personal care and pharmaceutical industries. Based on their ...origin and composition, surfactants can be divided into three different categories: (i) synthetic surfactants; (ii) bio-based surfactants; and (iii) microbial biosurfactants. The first group is the most widespread and cost-effective. It is composed of surfactants, which are synthetically produced, using non-renewable sources, with a final structure that is different from the natural components of living cells. The second category comprises surfactants of intermediate biocompatibility, usually produced by chemical synthesis but integrating fats, sugars or amino acids obtained from renewable sources into their structure. Finally, the third group of surfactants, designated as microbial biosurfactants, are considered the most biocompatible and eco-friendly, as they are produced by living cells, mostly bacteria and yeasts, without the intermediation of organic synthesis. Based on the information included in this review it would be interesting for cosmetic, personal care and pharmaceutical industries to consider microbial biosurfactants as a group apart from surfactants, needing specific regulations, as they are less toxic and more biocompatible than chemical surfactants having formulations that are more biocompatible and greener.
A mediados del siglo XIX se desarrollaron varios proyectos mineros en el oeste de la provincia de Catamarca (Argentina) dedicados principalmente a la explotación de cobre. En ese contexto, la Casa ...Lafone se destacó –entre otras cosas– por presentarse como un emprendimiento de “estilo inglés”, diferenciado del resto por la tecnología empleada y por el modo en que se organizaban las faenas y diferentes aspectos relativos a la vida de los trabajadores. En este artículo buscamos caracterizar el funcionamiento de dicho establecimiento minero poniendo el foco en el modo en que habitaron, trabajaron y circularon las personas como resultado de las reconfiguraciones espaciales y arquitectónicas y, en consecuencia, de tiempos, ritmos, tipos y formas de trabajo. Proponemos que esas reconfiguraciones constituyeron formas sutiles pero no menos potentes de control y disciplinamiento de la mano de obra que, junto a otras acciones, implicaron grandes cambios e impactos sobre el paisaje y los recursos y principalmente sobre la vida de las personas que allí vivieron y trabajaron.
The health crisis resulting from the global COVID-19 pandemic highlighted more than ever the need for rapid, reliable and safe methods of diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory diseases. To study ...pulmonary involvement in detail, one of the most common resources is the use of different lung imaging modalities (like chest radiography) to explore the possible affected areas.
The study of patient characteristics like sex and age in pathologies of this type is crucial for gaining knowledge of the disease and for avoiding biases due to the clear scarcity of data when developing representative systems. In this work, we performed an analysis of these factors in chest X-ray images to identify biases. Specifically, 11 imbalance scenarios were defined with female and male COVID-19 patients present in different proportions for the sex analysis, and 6 scenarios where only one specific age range was used for training for the age factor. In each study, 3 different approaches for automatic COVID-19 screening were used: Normal vs COVID-19, Pneumonia vs COVID-19 and Non-COVID-19 vs COVID-19. The study was validated using two public chest X-ray datasets, allowing a reliable analysis to support the clinical decision-making process.
The results for the sex-related analysis indicate this factor slightly affects the system in the Normal VS COVID-19 and Pneumonia VS COVID-19 approaches, although the identified differences are not relevant enough to worsen considerably the system. Regarding the age-related analysis, this factor was observed to be influencing the system in a more consistent way than the sex factor, as it was present in all considered scenarios. However, this worsening does not represent a major factor, as it is not of great magnitude.
Multiple studies have been conducted in other fields in order to determine if certain patient characteristics such as sex or age influenced these deep learning systems. However, to the best of our knowledge, this study has not been done for COVID-19 despite the urgency and lack of COVID-19 chest x-ray images. The presented results evidenced that the proposed methodology and tested approaches allow a robust and reliable analysis to support the clinical decision-making process in this pandemic scenario.
Experience in real clinical practice with ceftazidime/avibactam is limited, and there are even fewer data on infections due to OXA-48-producing Enterobacteriaceae.
We designed an observational study ...of a prospectively collected cohort of adult patients receiving ceftazidime/avibactam in our centre. Only the first treatment course of each patient was analysed. Efficacy and safety were evaluated as 14 and 30 day mortality, recurrence rate at 90 days, resistance development and occurrence of adverse effects.
Fifty-seven patients were treated with ceftazidime/avibactam. The median age was 64 years (range 26-86), 77% were male and the median Charlson index was 3. The most frequent sources of infection were intra-abdominal (28%), followed by respiratory (26%) and urinary (25%). Thirty-one (54%) patients had a severe infection (defined as presence of sepsis or septic shock). Most patients received ceftazidime/avibactam as monotherapy (81%) and the median duration of treatment was 13 days. Mortality at 14 days was 14%. In multivariate analysis, the only mortality risk factor was INCREMENT-CPE score >7 (HR 11.7, 95% CI 4.2-20.6). There was no association between mortality and monotherapy with ceftazidime/avibactam. The recurrence rate at 90 days was 10%. Ceftazidime/avibactam resistance was not detected in any case and only two patients developed adverse events related to treatment.
Ceftazidime/avibactam shows promising results, even in monotherapy, for the treatment of patients with severe infections due to OXA-48-producing Enterobacteriaceae and limited therapeutic options. The emergence of resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam was not observed.
The interest in biopreservation of food has prompted the quest for new natural antimicrobial compounds from different origins. Bacteriocins have been widely recognized as natural food ...biopreservatives but lastest advances on bateriocin biology have opened new fields to explore. On the contrary, the use of bacteriophages and endolysins has only been considered in the last five years and recent developments have produced promising perspectives. This review provides an overview of the current and foreseen applications of bacteriocins, bacteriophages and phage-encoded endolysins along the food chain and highlights research topics to be addressed in the future.
MDR3 (multidrug resistance 3) deficiency in humans (MDR2 in mice) causes progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 3 (PFIC3). PFIC3 is a lethal disease characterized by an early onset of ...intrahepatic cholestasis progressing to liver cirrhosis, a preneoplastic condition, putting individuals at risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Hepatocyte-like organoids from MDR2-deficient mice (MDR2KO) were used in this work to study the molecular alterations caused by the deficiency of this transporter. Proteomic analysis by mass spectrometry allowed characterization of 279 proteins that were differentially expressed in MDR2KO compared with wild-type organoids. Functional enrichment analysis indicated alterations in three main cellular functions: (1) interaction with the extracellular matrix, (2) remodeling intermediary metabolism, and (3) cell proliferation and differentiation. The affected cellular processes were validated by orthogonal molecular biology techniques. Our results point to molecular mechanisms associated with PFIC3 that may drive the progression to liver cirrhosis and HCC and suggest proteins and cellular processes that could be targeted for the development of early detection strategies for these severe liver diseases.
Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 3 (PFIC3) is a severe rare liver disease that affects between 1/50,000 and 1/100,000 children. In physiological conditions, bile is produced by the ...liver and stored in the gallbladder, and then it flows to the small intestine to play its role in fat digestion. To prevent tissue damage, bile acids (BAs) are kept in phospholipid micelles. Mutations in phosphatidyl choline transporter ABCB4 (MDR3) lead to intrahepatic accumulation of free BAs that result in liver damage. PFIC3 onset usually occurs at early ages, progresses rapidly, and the prognosis is poor. Currently, besides the palliative use of ursodeoxycholate, the only available treatment for this disease is liver transplantation, which is really challenging for short‐aged patients. To gain insight into the pathogenesis of PFIC3 we have performed an integrated proteomics and phosphoproteomics study in human liver samples to then validate the emerging functional hypotheses in a PFIC3 murine model. We identified 6246 protein groups, 324 proteins among them showing differential expression between control and PFIC3. The phosphoproteomic analysis allowed the identification of 5090 phosphopeptides, from which 215 corresponding to 157 protein groups, were differentially phosphorylated in PFIC3, including MDR3. Regulation of essential cellular processes and structures, such as inflammation, metabolic reprogramming, cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix remodeling, and cell proliferation, were identified as the main drivers of the disease. Our results provide a strong molecular background that significantly contributes to a better understanding of PFIC3 and provides new concepts that might prove useful in the clinical management of patients.
Proteomics analysis provides a detailed molecular landscape of PFIC3, pointing to several drivers of the progression of the disease that might prove useful for the management of patients.

, qnrA, qnrS, mecA, armA and sul1) were analyzed by qPCR in the phage DNA fraction. The genes were quantified, before and after propagation experiments in Escherichia coli, to evaluate the ability of ARG-carrying phage particles to infect and propagate in a bacterial host. According to microbiological parameters, all samples were acceptable for consumption. ARGs were detected in most of the samples after particle propagation indicating that at least part of the isolated phage particles were infectious, being sul1the most abundant ARG in all the matrices followed by β-lactamase genes. ARGs were also found in the phage DNA fraction of thirty-seven archive chicken cecal samples, confirming chicken fecal microbiota as an important ARG reservoir and the plausible origin of the particles found in meat. Phages are vehicles for gene transmission in meat that should not be underestimated as a risk factor in the global crisis of antibiotic resistance.
