Detailed analysis of the microstructural changes during lithiation of a full‐concentration‐gradient (FCG) cathode with an average composition of LiNi0.75Co0.10Mn0.15O2 is performed starting from its ...hydroxide precursor, FCG Ni0.75Co0.10Mn0.15(OH)2 prior to lithiation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that a unique rod‐shaped primary particle morphology and radial crystallographic texture are present in the prelithiation stage. In addition, TEM detected a two‐phase structure consisting of MnOOH and Ni(OH)2, and crystallographic twins of MnOOH on the Mn‐rich precursor surface. The formation of numerous twins is driven by the lattice mismatch between MnOOH and Ni(OH)2. Furthermore, the twins persist in the lithiated cathode; however, their density decrease with increasing lithiation temperature. Cation disordering, which influences cathode performance, is observed to continuously decrease with increasing lithiation temperature with a minimum observed at 790 °C. Consequently, lithiation at 790 °C (for 10 h) produced optimal discharge capacity and cycling stability. Above 790 °C, an increase in cation disordering and excessive coarsening of the primary particles lead to the deterioration of electrochemical properties. The twins in the FCG cathode precursor may promote the optimal primary particle morphology by retarding the random coalescence of primary particles during lithiation, effectively preserving both the morphology and crystallographic texture of the precursor.
Crystallographic twins form by the precipitation of MnOOH in full‐concentration‐gradient precursors, Ni0.75Co0.10Mn0.15(OH)2, for Li‐ion batteries. The twins persist in cathodes through lithiation, but with varying density depending on the temperature of lithiation. The twin density influences the size and crystallographic orientation of primary particles in cathodes, which unequivocally affect their electrochemical properties.

To achieve optimal bone marrow engraftment during bone marrow transplantation, migration of donor bone marrow cells (BMCs) toward the recipient's bone marrow is critical. Despite the enhanced ...engraftment of BMCs by co-administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), the efficiency can be variable depending on MSC donor. The purpose of this study is to examine the functional heterogeneity of tonsil-derived MSCs (TMSCs) and to identify a marker to evaluate efficacy for the enhancement of BMC migration.
To examine the donor-to-donor variation of TMSCs in potentiating BMC migration, we isolated TMSCs from 25 independent donors. Transcriptome of TMSCs and proteome of conditioned medium derived from TMSC were analyzed.
Enhanced BMC migration by conditioned medium derived from TMSCs was variable depending on TMSC donor. The TMSCs derived from 25 donors showed distinct expression profiles compared with other cells, including fibroblasts, adipose-derived MSCs and bone marrow-derived MSCs. TMSCs were distributed in two categories: high- and low-efficacy groups for potentiating BMC migration. Transcriptome analysis of TMSCs and proteome profiles of conditioned medium derived from TMSCs revealed higher expression and secretion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 1 in the high-efficacy group. MMP1 knockdown in TMSCs abrogated the supportive efficacy of conditioned medium derived from TMSC cultures in BMC migration.
These data suggest that secreted MMP1 can be used as a marker to evaluate the efficacy of TMSCs in enhancing BMC migration. Furthermore, the strategy of analyzing transcriptomes and proteomes of the MSCs may be useful to set the standard for donor variation.
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by neutrophils provide a frontline defence against invading pathogens. We investigated the supportive effect of tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells (TMSCs) ...on ROS generation from neutrophils using promyelocytic HL-60 cells. Methods: Differentiated HL-60 (dHL-60) cells were cocultured with TMSCs isolated from 25 independent donors, and ROS generation in dHL-60 cells was measured using luminescence. RNA sequencing and real-time PCR were performed to identify the candidate genes of TMSCs involved in augmenting the oxidative burst of dHL-60 cells. Transcriptome analysis of TMSCs derived from 25 independent donors revealed high levels of procollagen C-endopeptidase enhancer 2 (PCOLCE2) in TMSCs, which were highly effective in potentiating ROS generation in dHL-60 cells. In addition,
knockdown in TMSCs abrogated TMSC-induced enhancement of ROS production in dHL-60 cells, indicating that TMSCs increased the oxidative burst in dHL-60 cells via PCOLCE2. Furthermore, the direct addition of recombinant PCOLCE2 protein increased ROS production in dHL-60 cells. These results suggest that PCOLCE2 secreted by TMSCs may be used as a therapeutic candidate to enhance host defences by increasing neutrophil oxidative bursts. PCOLCE2 levels in TMSCs could be used as a marker to select TMSCs exhibiting high efficacy for enhancing neutrophil oxidative bursts.

The NiO cocatalyst was deposited on a GaN photoanode to improve the water splitting efficiency and to stabilize the photoelectrolysis of the GaN photoanode without corrosion of the GaN layer. The photoanode performance was investigated for various NiO deposition conditions based on metal organic decomposition. The GaN photoanode with the optimized NiO morphology showed significantly improved efficiency and photocurrent stability during water splitting compared to the reference GaN. No corrosion was observed for the GaN photoanode combined with NiO, which confirmed that the enhanced stability was related to the suppressed GaN etching at the surface. The improved water splitting performance was attributed to the fast transport of photo-generated holes in the valence band from GaN to NiO and the efficient water reduction at the NiO/electrolyte interface.
This cohort study aimed to investigate the factors associated with noninvasive positive pressure ventilation adherence and assess the long-term effects of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation ...adherence in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The medical records of patients with ALS admitted to a tertiary hospital for noninvasive positive pressure ventilation initiation were retrospectively reviewed. Pulmonary function parameters, variables of blood gas analysis, the site of symptom onset, the time from onset and diagnosis to noninvasive positive pressure ventilation application, ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised, neurophysiological index, and the length of hospital stay were evaluated. The adherence to noninvasive positive pressure ventilation was defined as the use of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation for ≥ 2 h/day or ≥ 4 h/day. The correlations between noninvasive positive pressure ventilation adherence or length of hospital stay and other clinical parameters were analyzed.
Fifty-one patients with ALS were included in the study. The time from onset and diagnosis to NIPPV application was reduced by 16 months in the adherent group than that in the non-adherent group; however, the parameters of blood gas analysis and pulmonary function tests did not differ significantly between the groups. Furthermore, the neurophysiological index of the abductor digiti minimi muscle was higher by 4.05 in the adherent group than that in the non-adherent group. The adherence to noninvasive positive pressure ventilation prolonged tracheostomy-free survival compared to that of non-adherence. Desaturation events, lower forced vital capacity, last pCO2, bicarbonate, and base excess, and higher differences in pCO2, were associated with an increase in the length of hospital stay.
Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation application shortly after symptom onset and ALS diagnosis in patients with CO2 retention and reduced forced vital capacity can be considered for successful adherence. Adherence to noninvasive positive pressure ventilation may result in reduced tracheostomy conversion rates and prolonged tracheostomy-free survival.

Botanical polysaccharides have been widely known to possess immunological activity. The objective of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the ...immunostimulatory properties of polysaccharides isolated from barley leaf (Hordeum vulgare L.) (BLE0) in splenocytes and cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced immunosuppressed mice. BLE0 showed cell proliferative activity and markedly increased the secretion of both Th1-cytokines (IFN-γ and IL-2) and Th2-cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10) in CD3/CD28-activated splenocytes. Molecular data revealed that BLE0 up-regulated the expression of T-bet with enhanced phosphorylation of Janus kinase (JAK)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 1 signaling pathway. BLE0 also increase the phosphorylation of GATA3 via toll-like receptor (TLR) 2-mediated signaling pathway with nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) activation. Oral administration of BLE0 effectively improved CYP-induced decrease of body weight, splenocyte proliferation, and natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxic activity and significantly increased Th1 and Th2 cytokines, T-bet, and GATA3 mRNA expression. Dietary intake of BLE0 improves the immunological manifestations by stimulating both Th1 and Th2 responses via JAK/STAT1/T-bet and TLR2/GATA3, respectively.
Background/purpose
Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and glutamine synthetase (GS) have been proposed to be promising markers for the differentiation of malignant and benign hepatocellular lesions. The ...aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological significance of the expression of HSP70 and GS in surgically resected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods
The authors collected 412 HCC samples and 120 non-neoplastic hepatic tissue samples and performed an immunohistochemical study.
Results
HSP70 staining was observed in 282 of 392 HCC samples (71.9%), and GS immunoreactivity was observed in 212 of 395 HCC cases (53.7%). Of the several clinicopathological parameters examined, microscopic vascular invasion, a large tumor size, and a high Edmonson–Steiner grade were found to be correlated with positive staining for HSP70 (
P
= 0.032, 0.002, and 0.012, respectively). Survival analysis showed a correlation between HSP70 expression and disease-free survival. GS was not found to be related to clinicopathological parameters.
Conclusions
The findings of the present study suggest that HSP70 be viewed as a predictor of prognosis as well as a useful diagnostic marker for HCC.
Background: This study assessed Korean residents’ health improvements by reducing chronic disease morbidity through customized health management. After identifying each participant’s strength and ...health through physical examinations and blood pressure tests, the effects of 24 weeks of online, non-face-to-face home workouts on body composition, physical fitness, cardiovascular function, and blood profiles in Korean adults with pre-metabolic syndrome were determined. Methods: Adults living in Chungcheongbuk-do, aged 19−65, and at the pre-metabolic syndrome stage were recruited at the Jeungpyeong-gun Public Health Center, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. For 24 weeks, from February 2022 to July 2022, they exercised for 60−70 min, three times a week, on average, at a maximum heart rate of 60−70%. The “Mobile Healthcare” application was used to record exercise time, number of exercises, number of sets, and Rating of Perceived Exertion at the end of each exercise. Body composition, physical fitness, cardiovascular function, and blood profiles were measured before and after participation. Results: There were no significant differences in weight, body mass index, body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, resting heart rate levels, or glucose levels after participation in the workout (p > 0.05). However, muscle strength/handgrip strength, sitting-rising test results, single-leg balance, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Although the 24 weeks of non-face-to-face home workouts did not positively affect body composition or cardiovascular function, it improved physical fitness and dyslipidemia.
