The aims of this study were to characterize and investigate antimicrobial susceptibility and presence of integrons in 161 Aeromonas spp. isolated from ornamental freshwater fish farming environment, ...apparently healthy and diseased fish. Phylogenetic analyses of the gyrB gene sequences identified Aeromonas veronii as the most abundant species (75.8%) followed by Aeromonashydrophila (9.3%), Aeromonas caviae (5%), Aeromonas jandaei (4.3%), Aeromonas dhakensis (3.7%), Aeromonas sobria (0.6%), Aeromonas media (0.6%), and Aeromonas popoffii (0.6%). Susceptibility to thirteen antimicrobials was determined and antimicrobial resistance frequencies were: amoxicillin (92.5%), enrofloxacin (67.1%), nalidixic acid (63.4%), erythromycin (26.1%), tetracycline (23.6%), imipenem (18%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (16.8%), and gentamicin (16.8%). Multi-drug resistance (MDR) was widespread among the isolates (51.6%, 83/161) with 51.6% (63/122) A. veronii isolates being MDR. In addition, 68.3% of isolates had multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) indexes higher than 0.2, suggesting that they originated from a high-risk source of contamination where antimicrobials are often used. In all, 21.7% isolates carried class 1 integrons, with 97.1% having gene cassettes, while there were 12 isolates carrying class 2 integron gene cassettes. Our findings highlight that the aquatic environment and ornamental fish act as reservoirs of multidrug resistant Aeromonas spp. and underline the need for a judicious use of antimicrobials and timely surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquaculture.
The site of Dmanisi, Georgia, has yielded an impressive sample of hominid cranial and postcranial remains, documenting the presence of Homo outside Africa around 1.8 million years ago. Here we report ...on a new cranium from Dmanisi (D4500) that, together with its mandible (D2600), represents the world's first completely preserved adult hominid skull from the early Pleistocene. D4500/D2600 combines a small braincase (546 cubic centimeters) with a large prognathic face and exhibits close morphological affinities with the earliest known Homo fossils from Africa. The Dmanisi sample, which now comprises five crania, provides direct evidence for wide morphological variation within and among early Homo paleodemes. This implies the existence of a single evolving lineage of early Homo, with phylogeographic continuity across continents.
Clinical outcome of pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) has been predominantly focused on the reoccurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) and the maintenance of sinus rhythm. However, there has been a ...limited intermediate follow-up on health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) of patients. Given the relatively high recurrence rate of persistent AF after PVI treatment, it is important to follow up with clinical outcomes on symptom improvement as well as health-related quality-of-life. This study was designed to investigate the recurrence rate of atrial tachyarrhythmia (ATa), AF-related symptoms and HRQoL after PVI in patients with persistent AF who were treated with the second generation cryoballoon.
Total 148 patients participated in the study who were treated by PVI between 2013 and 2017 for persistent AF. All patients visited the out-patient clinic 2-5 years after PVI. During this visit all patients filled-out an AF Effect on Quality-of-life (AFEQT) questionnaire and a seven-day Holter was applied. All rhythm recordings acquired post ablation were collected and analysed, and the modified European Heart Rhythm Association score (mEHRA) scores were calculated before and after the ablation.
The average age of patients was 63±9 year old and 44 (27.9%) were female. Mean CHA2DS2 VASc score was 1.9±1.4, and moderate and severe left atrial (LA) dilation was present in 53 (36.1%) and 15 (10.2%) patients, respectively. After a follow-up of 3.7±1.0 years, 81 (54.7%) patients had an ATa recurrence and 35 (23.6%) patients underwent a repeat LA ablation. However, the mEHRA score significantly improved in 80.4% of the patients (p <0.001), with the median overall AFEQT score of 88.9 70.4-97.2.
There is a considerable ATa recurrence rate after PVI of persistent AF at intermediate-term follow-up. However, our data indicate that PVI significantly improved AF-related symptoms and resulted in a high HRQoL for 2-5 years in patients with persistent AF.
Glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) is involved in the phosphorylation and inactivation of glycogen synthase. GSK-3 inhibitors have been associated with a variety of diseases, including Alzheimer´s ...disease (AD), diabetes type II, neurologic disorders, and cancer. The inhibition of GSK-3β isoforms is likely to represent an effective strategy against AD.
The present work aimed to design and synthesize coumarin derivatives to explore their potential as GSK-3β kinase inhibitors.
The through different synthetic methods were used to prepare coumarin derivatives. The GSK-3β activity was measured through the ADP-Glo™ Kinase Assay, which quantifies the kinasedependent enzymatic production of ADP from ATP, using a coupled-luminescence-based reaction. A docking study was performed by using the crystallographic structure of the staurosporine/GSK-3β complex Protein Data Bank (PDB) code: 1Q3D.
The eleven coumarin derivatives were obtained and evaluated as potential GSK-3β inhibitors. Additionally, in silico studies were performed. The results revealed that the compounds 5c, 5d, and 6b inhibited GSK-3β enzymatic activity by 38.97-49.62% at 1 mM. The other coumarin derivatives were tested at 1 mM, 1 µM, and 1 nM concentrations and were shown to be inhibitor candidates, with significant IC50 (1.224-6.875 µM) values, except for compound 7c (IC50 = 10.809 µM). Docking simulations showed polar interactions between compound 5b and Lys85 and Ser203, clarifying the mechanism of the most potent activity.
The coumarin derivatives 3a and 5b, developed in this study, showed remarkable activity as GSK-3β inhibitors.
Disturbances induce changes on habitat proprieties that may filter organism's functional traits thereby shaping the structure and interactions of many trophic levels. We tested if communities of ...predators with foraging traits dependent on habitat structure respond to environmental change through cascades affecting the functional traits of plants. We monitored the response of spider and plant communities to fire in South Brazilian Grasslands using pairs of burned and unburned plots. Spiders were determined to the family level and described in feeding behavioral and morphological traits measured on each individual. Life form and morphological traits were recorded for plant species. One month after fire the abundance of vegetation hunters and the mean size of the chelicera increased due to the presence of suitable feeding sites in the regrowing vegetation, but irregular web builders decreased due to the absence of microhabitats and dense foliage into which they build their webs. Six months after fire rosette-form plants with broader leaves increased, creating a favourable habitat for orb web builders which became more abundant, while graminoids and tall plants were reduced, resulting in a decrease of proper shelters and microclimate in soil surface to ground hunters which became less abundant. Hence, fire triggered changes in vegetation structure that lead both to trait-convergence and trait-divergence assembly patterns of spiders along gradients of plant biomass and functional diversity. Spider individuals occurring in more functionally diverse plant communities were more diverse in their traits probably because increased possibility of resource exploitation, following the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis. Finally, as an indication of resilience, after twelve months spider communities did not differ from those of unburned plots. Our findings show that functional traits provide a mechanistic understanding of the response of communities to environmental change, especially when more than one trophic level is considered.
The worldwide appeal has increased for the development of new technologies that allow the use of green energy. In this category, photovoltaic energy (PV) stands out, especially with regard to the ...presentation of forecasting methods of solar irradiance or solar power from photovoltaic generators. The development of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) has been investigated to overcome difficulties in electric grid operation, such as using energy in the peaks of load or economic dispatch. These technologies are often applied in the sense that solar irradiance is used to charge the battery. We present a review of solar forecasting methods used together with a PV-BESS. Despite the hundreds of papers investigating solar irradiation forecasting, only a few present discussions on its use on the PV-BESS set. Therefore, we evaluated 49 papers from scientific databases published over the last six years. We performed a quantitative analysis and reported important aspects found in the papers, such as the error metrics addressed, granularity, and where the data are obtained from. We also describe applications of the BESS, present a critical analysis of the current perspectives, and point out promising future research directions on forecasting approaches in conjunction with PV-BESS.

We consider a finite system of interacting point processes with memory of variable length modeling a finite but large network of spiking neurons with two different leakage mechanisms. Associated to ...each neuron there are two point processes, describing its successive spiking and leakage times. For each neuron, the rate of the spiking point process is an exponential function of its membrane potential, with the restriction that the rate takes the value 0 when the membrane potential is 0. At each spiking time, the membrane potential of the neuron resets to 0, and simultaneously, the membrane potentials of the other neurons increase by one unit. The leakage can be modeled in two different ways. In the first way, at each occurrence time of the leakage point process associated to a neuron, the membrane potential of that neuron is reset to 0, with no effect on the other neurons. In the second way, if the membrane potential of the neuron is strictly positive, at each occurrence time of the leakage point process associated to that neuron, its membrane potential decreases by one unit, with no effect on the other neurons. In both cases, the leakage point process of the neurons has constant rate. For both models, we prove that the system has a metastable behavior as the population size diverges. This means that the time at which the system gets trapped by the list of null membrane potentials suitably re-scaled converges to a mean one exponential random time.
To investigate the association between body image disorders and the lifestyle and body composition of female adolescents.

The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and Silhouette ...Scale and Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 were used to evaluate the participants' body image. Body composition was evaluated by a Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry equipment, and lifestyles were identified by latent class analysis (LCA) using the poLCA package for R.
Female adolescents aged 14-19 years old, in the city of Viçosa-MG, Brazil.
In total, 405 girls participated in the study. Almost half of the participants were dissatisfied with their current physical appearance (51·4 %), presented body perception distortions (52·9 %). 47·3 % of the adolescents were dissatisfied with their body according to the BSQ, and another 8 % severely so. Subjects with an 'Inactive and Sedentary' latent lifestyle were 1·71 times as likely to feel dissatisfied as those with active and sedentary or inactive and non-sedentary lifestyles (95 % CI 1·08, 2·90, P = 0·047). Body image disorders showed an association with decreased amounts of moderate and vigorous physical activity, high screen time, increased alcohol consumption and excess body fat.
Particular patterns of lifestyle and body composition seem to be associated in female adolescents with dissatisfaction with, distortion of and excessive concern about appearance. Specifically, physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour, alcohol consumption and high body fat percentage may be strongly linked to body image disorders.
