Recognition and epidemiological control of childhood and adolescent tuberculosis (TB) is essential to achieve effective control of TB in general as it presents high risk for transmission in the ...community. The aim of the study is to provide a descriptive and analytic overview of the trends in childhood and adolescent TB notifications and treatment outcomes and to identify factors associated with treatment success in a twelve-year period in Serbia.
We performed a retrospective trend analysis and analysis of treatment outcomes of 596 child and adolescent TB cases notified in Serbia in the period 2005-2016 from all health facilities, as well as logistic regression analysis to identify predictors of treatment success.
Factors independently associated with treatment success were: new TB (OR=2.60; 95% CI: 1.45-3.74), male sex (OR=2.55; 95% CI: 2.09-3.00), pulmonary TB (OR=3.34; 95% CI: 2.34-4.34), comorbidities (OR=2.58; 95% CI: 2.24-2.91), age below 5 years (OR=0.37; 95% CI: 0.32-0.43), and social vulnerability (OR=0.40; 95% CI: 0.34-0.46).
In order to improve TB treatment outcomes among children and adolescent population in Serbia, it is important to focus on female, age group 5-18, EPTB, retreatment cases and socially vulnerable groups.
Introduction. The aim of this research was to assess the efficiency and safety of a natural product N-acetylcysteine and propolis in the children with acute respiratory infections with increased ...mucus production and cough. Material and Methods. The research was conducted in the period April 2016 - February 2017 among 145 pediatric patients aged 3 to 14 years with symptoms of acute respiratory infection. They were divided into two groups. Group A-preschool and Group B - school children. The first clinical examination included demographic data, physical examination. filling out the quality of cough questionnaire, and taking nasal and pharyngeal swabs. After a ten-day therapy, physical examination was conducted, quality of cough questionnaire was refilled and swabs were taken. Results. Group A included 73 and Group B 72 children. No statistically significant difference was observed in the incidence of respiratory disease episodes. In Group B children received antibiotics less often. started school at an early age and more children had daily activities in regard to children in Group A. Statistically, both groups of children coughed early in the morning more than during the day. The results of control swab tests were negative in both groups. No side effects were reported in either group. Conclusion. The propolis combined with N-acetylcysteine in a pediatric syrup is a good choice in the treatment of acute respiratory infections in children with accompanied mucus production and cough. Cilj naseg istrazivanja bio je da se proceni efikasnost i kvalitet zivota primenom prirodnog preparata propolisa i N-acetilcisteina kod dece sa akutnim respiratornim infekcijama pracenim povecanom produkcijom sekreta i kasljem. Materijal i metode. Istrazivanje je sprovedeno u periodu april 2016--januar 2017. godine kod 145 dece, uzrasta od tri do 14 godina sa simptomima akutne respiratorne infekcije. Podeljena su u dve grupe, grupa A - deca predskolskog, a grupa B - deca skolskog uzrasta. Pri prvoj poseti su uzeti demografski podaci, brisevi nosa i zdrela, uradeni fizikalni pregledi i popunjen upitnik o kvalitetu kaslja. Nakon desetodnevne terapije, pored fizikalnog pregleda, ponovljen je upitnik o kvalitetu kaslja i uzeti brisevi. Rezultati. U grupi A bilo je 73 i u grupi B 72 dece. Nije bilo statisticki zanacajne razlike u ucestalosti epizoda respiratornih bolesti. Deca u grupi B su rede dobijala antibiotike, ranije su kretala u zajednicki kolektiv i vise dece je imalo dodatnih aktivnosti od dece grupe A. U obe grupe statisticki vise dece je kasljalo rano ujutru i tokom dana. Kontrolni brisevi bili su negativni u obe grupe. Nije zabelezeno nijedno nezeljeno dejstvo u obe grupe. Zakljucak. Kombinacija propolisa i N-acetilcisteina u sirupu za decu predstavlja dobar izbor u lecenju akutne respiratorne infekcije kod dece, pracenih produkcijom sekreta i kasljem. Preparat je efikasan i bezbedan za primenu u svim dobnim grupama. Between February and November 2016, 17 tuberculosis (TB) cases were identified among high school students in Novi Pazar, Serbia. The objectives of our study were to describe the outbreak, to identify ...potential risk factors and to evaluate the applied control measures.
The outbreak was described by time, person and place. A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Attack rates, unadjusted relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Multiple log-binomial regression analysis was performed to calculate adjusted RR.
Sixteen of the total 17 cases occurred among grade 3 students, AR 5.5%. Previous TB family history, (RR = 5.29; 95% CI = 1.63-17.12), spending time with a known TB case at school (RR = 5.38; 95% CI = 1.48-19.55) and exposure to secondhand smoke (RR = 3.37; 95% CI = 1.11-10.29) were all significantly and independently associated with the occurrence of TB.
Delayed diagnosis and reporting resulted in delayed initiation of the contact investigation and non-identification of latent TB cases probably favored the occurrence of this outbreak in a low incidence country. Public health authorities should consider revising the existing guidelines, promoting inter-sectorial collaboration and increasing awareness of public health professionals.
