However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has objectively assessed periorbital neoformation and ...remodeling of local cutaneous collagen, in a split-face model, from skin samples obtained during upper blepharoplasty.
The authors sought to objectively evaluate neoformation and remodeling of local cutaneous collagen after periorbital skin fractional CO2 laser resurfacing.
Sixteen female patients presenting with dermatochalasis and periorbital rhytids were evaluated in a prospective and comparative study. All patients underwent unilateral periorbital fractional CO2 laser resurfacing 30 days before upper blepharoplasty. Quantification of types I and III collagen from laser-treated and untreated eyelid skin samples obtained during upper blepharoplasty was assessed with histochemical analysis (Picrosirius Red staining). Laser resurfacing treatment was applied to the untreated side immediately after the upper blepharoplasty. Two blinded, independent physicians evaluated clinical improvement in pretreatment and 1- and 6-month posttreatment digital images.
Histochemical analysis showed significantly higher intensity in collagen types I (treated: 158.7 ± 5.3, untreated: 139.2 ± 5.0; P < 0.0001) and III (treated: 105.1 ± 7.7, untreated: 104.1 ± 7.1; P < 0.0001) in the fractional CO2 laser treatment samples; a greater difference was detected in collagen type I. A significant improvement in periorbital rhytidosis was observed 1 month after laser resurfacing (23%); a greater improvement in the periorbital region was observed 6 months after laser resurfacing and upper blepharoplasty (43.67%).
Periorbital fractional CO2 laser resurfacing was an effective method to improve palpebral skin, with histochemical evidence of increase in collagen types I and III.
Immediate postretrieval bilateral blockade of long-acting voltage–dependent calcium channels (L-VDCCs), but not of glutamatergic NMDA receptors, in the dorsal CA1 region of the hippocampus hinders ...retention of long-term spatial memory in the Morris water maze. Immediate postretrieval bilateral inhibition of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaMK) II in dorsal CA1 does not affect retention of this task 24 h later but does hinder it 5 d later. These two distinct amnesic effects are abolished if protein degradation by proteasomes is inhibited concomitantly. These results indicate that spatial memory reconsolidation depends on the functionality of L-VDCC in dorsal CA1, that maintenance of subsequent reconsolidated memory trace depends on CaMKII, and these results also suggest that the role played by both L-VDCC and CaMKII is to promote the retrieval-dependent, synaptically localized enhancement of protein synthesis necessary to counteract a retrieval-dependent, synaptic-localized enhancement of protein degradation, which has been described as underlying the characteristic labilization of the memory trace triggered by retrieval. Thus, conceivably, L-VDCC and CaMKII would enhance activity-dependent localized protein renewal, which may account for the improvement of the long-term efficiency of the synapses responsible for the maintenance of reactivated long-term spatial memory.
A few epidemiological studies are evaluating the prevalence and mortality rates of Alzheimer’s disease, with no one using a nationwide sample of Brazilian elderlies. This study aims to calculate the ...prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and investigate possible associations with sociodemographic and lifestyle factors and the presence of diseases non-communicable, and the prevalence and mortality for all Brazilian state capitals. This is an ecological design study made with secondary public data provided by the Ministry of Health. Prevalence rates were calculated based on the analysis of the dispensing of Alzheimer’s disease-specific drugs. Correlation analyzes were performed between rates and factors, and a multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze possible associations between variables, controlled for each other. AD prevalence was 313/100,000. Prevalence rates were positively associated with primary health care coverage factors and negatively associated with ultra-processed food consumption and physical activity levels. AD mortality was 98/100,000. Mortality rates were positively associated with the proportion of obese elderly and elderly living on up to half the minimum wage and were inversely associated with the proportion of elderly with diabetes factors. We found positive and negative associations of sociodemographic, behavioral and diabetes indicators with Alzheimer’s disease prevalence and mortality, which provide data that can be investigated by studies with different designs.

It has already been shown that both consolidation and reconsolidation of long-term memories require protein synthesis and de novo gene transcription immediately after training or mnemonic trace reactivation sessions. A few studies have also shown that consolidation of long-term memories also requires a late second wave of de novo gene transcription. Does such a requirement also occur for reconsolidation? By using two different mRNA synthesis inhibitors, we show that blockade of hippocampal late gene expression during a restricted post-training or postretrieval time window hinders the retention of long-term spatial memory for the Morris water maze task without affecting the functionality of the hippocampus. Our results indicate that spatial memory consolidation induces the activation of the late hippocampal genes transcriptional machinery and suggests a late gene expression-dependent reconsolidation process that operates in the dorsal hippocampus to stabilize the reactivated mnemonic trace.
Ozone as an alternative process for the clarification of sugarcane juice has been studied because it presents as an advantage the mineralization of organic compounds that cause color in the crystal ...sugar. No residues harmful to humans were found after ozonation in contrast to the sulphitation process traditionally used. In this work, the degradation by ozonation of flavonoids and phenolic acids were studied using two compounds: rutin and caffeic acid. Ozonation was efficient and was monitored by liquid chromatography, UV scanning and direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. From the collected data, degradation mechanisms and potential mineralization of rutin and caffeic acid after ozonation were proposed.
Neuroimaging studies have been steadily explored in Bipolar Disorder (BD) in the last decades. Neuroanatomical changes tend to be more pronounced in patients with repeated episodes. Although the role ...of such changes in cognition and memory is well established, daily-life functioning impairments bulge among the consequences of the proposed progression. The objective of this study was to analyze MRI volumetric modifications in BD and healthy controls (HC) as possible predictors of daily-life functioning through a machine learning approach.
Ninety-four participants (35 DSM-IV BD type I and 59 HC) underwent clinical and functioning assessments, and structural MRI. Functioning was assessed using the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST). The machine learning analysis was used to identify possible candidates of regional brain volumes that could predict functioning status, through a support vector regression algorithm. Patients with BD and HC did not differ in age, education and marital status. There were significant differences between groups in gender, BMI, FAST score, and employment status. There was significant correlation between observed and predicted FAST score for patients with BD, but not for controls. According to the model, the brain structures volumes that could predict FAST scores were: left superior frontal cortex, left rostral medial frontal cortex, right white matter total volume and right lateral ventricle volume. The machine learning approach demonstrated that brain volume changes in MRI were predictors of FAST score in patients with BD and could identify specific brain areas related to functioning impairment.

< 0.008) compared to that of healthy controls. Patients with Alzheimer disease studied present increase in biometal blood levels, especially of copper and iron, and such increase can be different according to the disease stage and can cause more impairment cognitive functions in AD.

In this study, the role of the prophylactic muscular strength exercise was investigated in order to verify ...whether it would diminish cognitive alterations and modify the antioxidant intracellular scenery in an animal neuroinflammatory model in of the CA1 region of the hippocampus.
The animals received muscular strength training (SE) three times a week for eight weeks. Subsequently, the stereotaxic surgery was performed with an intra-hippocampal infusion of either saline solution (SAL) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Next, we performed the behavioral tests: object recognition and social recognition. Then, the animals were euthanized, and their hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were collected. In another moment, we performed the dosage of the antioxidant activity and histological analysis.
The results showed that the muscular strength exercises could show a beneficial prophylactic effect in the cognitive deficiencies caused by acute neuroinflammation. Regarding oxidative stress, there was an increase in catalase enzyme activity (CAT) in the group (SE + LPS) compared to the control groups (p < 0.05). As for the cognitive alterations, there were found in the (SE + LPS) group, diminishing the mnemonic hazard of the discriminative and social memories compared to the control groups (p < 0.05).
We concluded, therefore, that the exercise performed prophylactically presents a protective effect capable of minimizing such mnemonic deficits and increasing catalase enzyme activity in rats that suffered a local neuroinflammatory process in the hippocampus.
