The CP-violation experiment NA48 at CERN aims at measuring direct CP-violation in the decays of neutral kaons into π+π− and π0π0. The experiment uses simultaneous, almost collinear beams of neutral ...KL0 and KS0 mesons, which are produced on two different targets. KS0 events are “tagged” by measuring the times of the protons that fly towards the KS0 production target. In order to sustain the high rate of 107protons/s in this beam without suffering from too many pile-up events, the detector consists of 24 separate scintillators (12 horizontal and 12 vertical), each of which sees only a small fraction of the beam. Their signals are digitized by specially developed 1GHz FADCs. The exact time of a pulse is established offline by a fit procedure. The detector and its electronics have been successfully used during test beams in 1994–1996 and during the first physics run of NA48 in 1997. The inefficiency of the detector has been measured to 2×10−4. Sources of background have been identified to allow for off-line correction. The mechanical setup of the detector, the 1GHz FADC and results from the test and data runs are presented.
The direct CP violation parameter Re(ϵ′/ϵ) has been measured from the decay rates of neutral kaons into two pions using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. The 2001 running period was devoted to ...collecting additional data under varied conditions compared to earlier years (1997–1999). The new data yield the result: Re(ϵ′/ϵ)=(13.7±3.1)×10−4. Combining this result with that published from the 1997, 98 and 99 data, an overall value of Re(ϵ′/ϵ)=(14.7±2.2)×10−4 is obtained from the NA48 experiment.
We present a measurement of the ratio of the decay rates Γ(KL→π+π−)/Γ(KL→π±e∓ν), denoted as ΓK2π/ΓKe3. The analysis is based on data taken during a dedicated run in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at the ...CERN SPS. Using a sample of 47 000 K2π and five million Ke3 decays, we find ΓK2π/ΓKe3=(4.835±0.022stat.±0.016syst.)×10−3. From this we derive the branching ratio of the CP violating decay KL→π+π− and the CP violation parameter |η+−|. Excluding the CP conserving direct photon emission component KL→π+π−γ, we obtain the results BR(KL→π+π−)=(1.941±0.019)×10−3 and |η+−|=(2.223±0.012)×10−3.
This paper reports on a new high precision measurement of the form factors of the K_{L}\to \pi^{\pm} \mu^{\mp} \nu_{\mu} decay. The data sample of about 2.3$\times 10^{6}$ events was recorded in 1999 ...by the NA48 experiment at CERN. Studying the Dalitz plot density we measured a linear, $\lambda^{'}_{+} = (20.5\pm 2.2_{stat} \pm 2.4_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$, and a quadratic, $\lambda^{''}_{+} = (2.6\pm 0.9_{stat} \pm 1.0_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ term in the power expansion of the vector form factor. No evidence was found for a second order term for the scalar form factor; the linear slope was determined to be $\lambda_{0} = (9.5\pm 1.1_{stat} \pm 0.8_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$. Using a linear fit our results were: $\lambda_{+} = (26.7\pm 0.6_{stat} \pm 0.8_{syst} )\times 10^{-3}$ and, $\lambda_{0} = (11.7\pm 0.7_{stat} \pm 1.0_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$. A pole fit of the form factors yields: $m_V = (905 \pm 9_{stat} \pm 17_{syst})$ MeV/c$^2$ and $m_S = (1400 \pm 46_{stat} \pm 53_{syst})$ MeV/c$^2$.
In data taken with the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS in 1999, 730 candidates of the weak radiative hyperon decay Xi0 -> Lambda gamma have been found with an estimated background of 58+-8 events. ...From these events the Xi0 -> Lambda gamma decay asymmetry has been determined to alpha(Xi0 -> Lambda gamma) = -0.78 +- 0.18_stat +- 0.06_syst, which is the first evidence of a decay asymmetry in Xi0 -> Lambda gamma. The branching fraction of the decay has been measured to be Br(Xi0 -> Lambda gamma) = (1.16 +- 0.05_stat +- 0.06_syst) x 10^-3.
The decay rate of $\klpgg$ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of $2558$ $\klpgg$ candidates have been observed with a residual background of $3.2\%$. The branching ...ratio is determined to be $(1.36 \pm0.03_{(stat)} \pm0.03_{(syst)}\pm 0.03_{(norm)})\times10^{-6}$ and the vector coupling constant $a_v = -0.46 \pm0.03_{(stat)} \pm0.04_{(syst)}$. This result suggests that the CP-violation effects are dominating in the $\klpee$ decay. An upper limit for the $\klpgg$ decay rate in the two photon mass region $m_{\gamma\gamma} m_{\pi^0}$ is also given
New measurements of the $\eta$ and $K^0$ masses have been performed using decays to 3$\pi^0$ with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using symmetric decays to reduce systematic effects, the results ...$M(\eta) = 547.843\pm0.051$~MeV/c$^2$ and $M(K^0) = 497.625\pm0.031$~MeV/c$^2$ were obtained.
A search for the decay K_S -> pi0gammagamma has been made using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using data collected in 1999 during a 40-hour run with a high-intensity K_S, an upper limit for the ...branching ratio BR (K_S -> pi0gammagamma,z = 0.2) 3.3 x 10-7 has been obtained at 90% confidence level, where z = m^2_gammagamma/m^2_K_0.
