In both abrasive water jet (AWJ) and high pressure abrasive slurry jet (HASJ) machining, garnet abrasive particles are mixed with water and the resulting jet can contain particles travelling with a ...wide range of velocities. Previous investigations have suggested that a dual disc anemometer (DDA) can be used to provide an assessment of the average particle velocity within the jets. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the DDA test by considering the distribution and size of impact craters on the recording disc, and by modeling the size of the slurry slug incident to it. Procedures are presented to assess the accuracy of the determined average velocity, and to determine the histogram of particle velocities within the jet. A modification to the anemometer is introduced which also allows determination of the particle size-velocity correlation. Results are presented for both HASJ and AWJ under typical process conditions, and compared to existing analytical models of abrasive particle velocity from the literature, with good agreement.
The proliferation of mobile technology has prompted the use of tablet devices in the cockpit and during ground operations in general aviation. Due to the increase in affordable and reliable hardware ...(i.e. iPads etc.), the development of pilot-specific software has led to the creation of a commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS), electronic flight bag (EFB) market. EFBs have many advantages, such as reducing the space requirements for flight documents, enabling faster searching and indexing of files, providing useful tools for flight planning, and providing automatic updates. The increase in availability of mobile technology and flight applications has allowed general aviation enthusiast and ab-initio pilots to utilize EFBs. This paper examines the usability of three of the most popular commercial EFB software programs: Foreflight mobile, Garmin Pilot, FltPlan Go. The usability study was developed for the ab-initio demographic (time), which primarily constitutes pilots who have completed their cross country training. The study assessed 30 ab-initio collegiate flight students on a series of tasks during each flight application. The usability of the applications was based on task success, time to complete the task, efficiency of the application, and learnability. The students also completed a pre survey, the NASA Task Load Index (TLX), System Usability Survey (SUS), and post survey, respectively. An Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to compare the scores of the three applications. The results of the study show that Foreflight had the best scores across all metrics.
This paper proposes and explores new attribute correlations and combined effort of multiple instances of microcluster-based anomaly detection on port scans, distributed denial of service and botnet ...attacks. To this end, the proposed system for micro-clustering based anomaly detection is compared against the state-of-the-art technique on three different network datasets, namely CTU-IoT, CTU-13 and UNSW-NB15. Evaluations not only show the effectiveness and high performance of the proposed system on all three datasets but also demonstrate the generalizability of the newly proposed attribute correlations and combination strategies.
One of the resources used in anomaly detection on log data is graph based approaches. Connections between adjacent log entries, co-occurrence of attributes, and other relations can be easily ...represented using graphs. In this paper, using a state-of-the-art (SOTA) graph based anomaly detection method, we reproduce and show the limitations on publicly available log data. Then we introduce a novel method, MIMC, that improves on the detection rates without causing a considerable loss in the overall performance. In order to evaluate the performance of MIMC, we perform experiments over the same datasets used in SOTA. The results indicate that MIMC has merit as a graph-based anomaly detection system over different types of log data. We believe that this is an important achievement on the road to building an unsupervised and online approach.
There is a perceived disconnect between how ad hoc industry solutions and academic research solutions in cyber security are developed and applied. Why is that? Is there a difference in philosophy in ...how solutions to cyber security problems are developed by industry and by academia? What could academia and industry do to bridge this gap and speed up the development and use of effective cybersecurity solutions? This position paper provides an overview of the most critical gaps and solutions identified by an interdisciplinary expert exchange on the topic. The discussion was held in the form of the webinar "Bridging the Bubbles: Connecting Academia and Industry in Cybersecurity Research" in November 2022 as part of the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst webinar series. Panelists included researchers from academia and industry as well as experts from industry and business development. The key findings and recommendations of this exchange are supported by the relevant scientific literature on the topic within this paper. Different approaches and time frames in development and lifecycle management, challenges in knowledge transfer and communication as well as heterogeneous metrics for success in projects are examples of the evaluated subject areas.

Background: Proteus syndrome is a rare, sporadic disorder consisting of disproportionate overgrowth of multiple tissues, vascular malformations, and connective tissue or epidermal nevi. Patients with ...Proteus syndrome present with diverse and variable phenotypes because of the syndrome's mosaic pattern of distribution. Methods: Eighty patients with Proteus syndrome, satisfying published diagnostic criteria, and 51 patients with overgrowth not meeting Proteus criteria were identified from the literature. Three additional patients, one patient with Proteus syndrome and 2 patients with overgrowth, were treated at the author's institutions and are discussed in detail. All nonorthopedic and noncutaneous surgical interventions were reviewed. Results: Fourteen genitourinary, 9 gastrointestinal, and 5 otolaryngologic operations were performed on patients with Proteus syndrome. Six genitourinary, 5 gastrointestinal, and 2 otolaryngologic operations were performed on patients with overgrowth not meeting Proteus criteria. Eight patients with Proteus syndrome and 4 patients with overgrowth experienced thoracic manifestations, generally diffuse cystic pulmonary lesions, but only 1 of 12 underwent surgical treatment. Conclusions: Patients with visceral manifestations of either Proteus syndrome or overgrowth not meeting Proteus criteria should be treated in a similar manner. Lesions involving the ovaries and testes, because of the high incidence of neoplasm, should be managed aggressively. Gastrointestinal and renal lesions may be managed conservatively with frequent follow-up to minimize abdominal explorations. All patients undergoing surgery should have a thorough preoperative assessment of their airway and pulmonary reserve because of the relatively high frequency of tonsillar hypertrophy and pulmonary cystic involvement.
