Control over chemo- and regioselectivity is a critical issue in the heterobiaryl synthesis
C-H oxidative coupling. To address this challenge, a strategy to invert the normal polarity of indoles in ...the heterobiaryl coupling was developed. With
-carboxyindoles as umpoled indoles, an exclusively
-selective coupling with phenols has been realized, employing a Brønsted acid- or Cu(i)-catalyst (as low as 0.01 mol%). A range of phenols and
-carboxyindoles coupled with exceptional efficiency and selectivity at ambient temperature and the substrates bearing redox-active aryl halides (-Br and -I) smoothly coupled in an orthogonal manner. Notably, preliminary examples of atropselective heterobiaryl coupling have been demonstrated, based on a chiral disulfonimide or a Cu(i)/chiral bisphosphine catalytic system. The reaction was proposed to occur through S
2' substitution or a Cu(i)-Cu(iii) cycle, with Brønsted acid or Cu(i) catalysts, respectively.
The human gut microbiome has been associated with many health factors but variability between studies limits exploration of effects between them. Gut microbiota profiles are available for >2700 ...members of the deeply phenotyped TwinsUK cohort, providing a uniform platform for such comparisons. Here, we present gut microbiota association analyses for 38 common diseases and 51 medications within the cohort. We describe several novel associations, highlight associations common across multiple diseases, and determine which diseases and medications have the greatest association with the gut microbiota. These results provide a reference for future studies of the gut microbiome and its role in human health.

Among the various generative adversarial network (GAN)-based image inpainting methods, a coarse-to-fine network with a contextual attention module (CAM) has shown remarkable performance. However, due ...to two stacked generative networks, the coarse-to-fine network needs numerous computational resources, such as convolution operations and network parameters, which result in low speed. To address this problem, we propose a novel network architecture called parallel extended-decoder path for semantic inpainting (PEPSI) network, which aims at reducing the hardware costs and improving the inpainting performance. PEPSI consists of a single shared encoding network and parallel decoding networks called coarse and inpainting paths. The coarse path produces a preliminary inpainting result to train the encoding network for the prediction of features for the CAM. Simultaneously, the inpainting path generates higher inpainting quality using the refined features reconstructed via the CAM. In addition, we propose Diet-PEPSI that significantly reduces the network parameters while maintaining the performance. In Diet-PEPSI, to capture the global contextual information with low hardware costs, we propose novel rate-adaptive dilated convolutional layers that employ the common weights but produce dynamic features depending on the given dilation rates. Extensive experiments comparing the performance with state-of-the-art image inpainting methods demonstrate that both PEPSI and Diet-PEPSI improve the qualitative scores, i.e., the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM), as well as significantly reduce hardware costs, such as computational time and the number of network parameters.
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium, and it is found in many foods. Acrylamide (AA) can be produced in foods treated at high temperatures. In this study, we ...investigated the combined toxicity of OTA and AA against human renal and hepatic cells in vitro. The concentration at which the synergistic effect of OTA and AA occurs was determined using the combination index obtained from the cell viability results for OTA and AA individually or in combination. The synergistic toxicity of both substances was evaluated by cell viability and the production of reactive oxygen species. In addition, apoptosis-related markers were significantly upregulated by OTA and AA individually or in combination. To determine the combined toxic effects of OTA and AA on the cells, the levels of enzymes involved in the phase I reaction and apoptosis-related markers were determined using quantitative (q)PCR and Western blot. The expression levels of CYP enzymes CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 involved in the phase I reaction significantly increased when the cells were treated with OTA and AA in combination. The expression of apoptosis-related markers, Bcl2-associated X protein (Bax) and caspase 3, also increased when the cells were treated with OTA and AA in combination. Therefore, the synergistic toxicity of OTA and AA suggests that such effects may contribute to nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity.
The present study examined whether adult height was associated with all site-combined or site-specific cancers.
We used a nationwide claim data of 22,809,722 Korean participants including both men ...and women (2009-2012). The deciles of height from different age and sex groups were merged into a new quintile. We used Cox proportional hazards model to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals.
During a 5-year follow-up period, 765,651 patients were diagnosed with cancer. Height was positively associated with risk of all site-combined cancers and with malignancy in the oral cavity, larynx, lung, stomach, colorectum, liver, pancreas, biliary tract and gallbladder, breast, ovary, cervix and corpus uteri, prostate, testes, kidney, bladder, central nervous system, thyroid, skin, and lymphatic and haematopoietic systems. The HRs for all-site cancers per 5 cm increment in height was 1.09 and that of each site was the highest in thyroid, breast, lymphoma, testicular, and renal cancers. This association was more prominent in women and male non-smokers than in other counterparts.
Taller adult height was significantly related to an increased risk of most cancers including neoplasm in the gallbladder or biliary tract and testes, but except for oesophagus.
An optical phased array (OPA) in silicon nitride (SiN) is conspicuously highlighted as a vital alternative to its counterpart in silicon. However, a limited number of studies have been conducted on ...this array in terms of wavelength-tuned beam steering. A SiN OPA has been proposed and implemented with a grating antenna that incorporated an array of shallow-etched waveguides, rendering wavelength-tuned beam steering along the longitudinal direction. To accomplish a superior directionality on a wavelength-tuned beam steering, the spectral beam emission characteristics of the antenna have been explored from the viewpoint of a planar structure that entails a buried oxide (BOX), a SiN waveguide core, and an upper cladding. Two OPA devices having substantially different thicknesses of the resonant cavities, established by combining the BOX and SiN core, were considered theoretically and experimentally to scrutinize the spectral emission characteristics of the antenna on beam steering. Both of the fabricated OPA devices steered light by an angle of 7.4° along the longitudinal direction for a wavelength ranging from 1530 to 1630 nm, while they maintained a divergence angle of 0.2°×0.6° in the longitudinal and lateral directions. Meanwhile, the OPA fabricated on a substantially thick BOX layer featured a limited steering performance to attain a stabilized response over a broad spectral region. We examined the influence of the cavity thickness on the spectral response of the antenna in terms of optical thickness. Based on the two antenna characteristics, it was confirmed that the grating antenna emitted the beam with a higher efficiency when the optical thickness of the cavity corresponded to odd integer multiples of the quarter wavelength. This work is a considerable strategy for designing a stabilized SiN OPA over a desired spectral region.
