ABSTRACT
Recently, it has been discovered that the transition of X-ray pulsars to the low luminosity state ($L\lesssim 10^{35}\, {\rm erg\ \rm s^{-1}}$) is accompanied by a dramatic spectral change. ...That is, the typical power-law-like spectrum with high-energy cut-off transforms into a two-component structure with a possible cyclotron absorption feature on top of it. It was proposed that these spectral characteristics can be explained qualitatively by the emission of cyclotron photons in the atmosphere of the neutron star caused by collisional excitation of electrons to upper Landau levels and further Comptonization of the photons by electron gas. The electron gas are expected to be overheated in a thin top layer of the atmosphere. In this paper, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of the radiative transfer in the atmosphere of an accreting neutron star while accounting for a resonant scattering of polarized X-ray photons by thermally distributed electrons. The spectral shape is shown to be strongly polarization-dependent in soft X-rays ($\lesssim 10\, {\rm keV}$) and near the cyclotron scattering feature. The results of our numerical simulations are tested against the observational data of the X-ray pulsar A 0535+262 in the low-luminosity state. We show that the spectral shape of the pulsar can be reproduced by the proposed theoretical model. We discuss applications of the discovery to the observational studies of accreting neutron stars.
In humans, the monocyte pool comprises three subsets (classical, intermediate, and nonclassical) that circulate in dynamic equilibrium. The kinetics underlying their generation, differentiation, and ...disappearance are critical to understanding both steady-state homeostasis and inflammatory responses. Here, using human in vivo deuterium labeling, we demonstrate that classical monocytes emerge first from marrow, after a postmitotic interval of 1.6 d, and circulate for a day. Subsequent labeling of intermediate and nonclassical monocytes is consistent with a model of sequential transition. Intermediate and nonclassical monocytes have longer circulating lifespans (∼4 and ∼7 d, respectively). In a human experimental endotoxemia model, a transient but profound monocytopenia was observed; restoration of circulating monocytes was achieved by the early release of classical monocytes from bone marrow. The sequence of repopulation recapitulated the order of maturation in healthy homeostasis. This developmental relationship between monocyte subsets was verified by fate mapping grafted human classical monocytes into humanized mice, which were able to differentiate sequentially into intermediate and nonclassical cells.
Mid-infrared spectroscopy is a widely used tool for material identification and secondary structure analysis in chemistry, biology and biochemistry. However, the diffraction limit prevents nanoscale ...protein studies. Here we introduce mapping of protein structure with 30 nm lateral resolution and sensitivity to individual protein complexes by Fourier transform infrared nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR). We present local broadband spectra of one virus, ferritin complexes, purple membranes and insulin aggregates, which can be interpreted in terms of their α-helical and/or β-sheet structure. Applying nano-FTIR for studying insulin fibrils--a model system widely used in neurodegenerative disease research--we find clear evidence that 3-nm-thin amyloid-like fibrils contain a large amount of α-helical structure. This reveals the surprisingly high level of protein organization in the fibril's periphery, which might explain why fibrils associate. We envision a wide application potential of nano-FTIR, including cellular receptor in vitro mapping and analysis of proteins within quaternary structures.

The recent discovery of pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) shows that the apparent luminosity of accreting neutron stars can exceed the Eddington luminosity by a factor of 100s. ...The relation between the actual and apparent luminosity is a key ingredient in theoretical models of ULXs, but it is still under debate. A typical feature of the discovered pulsating ULXs is a large pulsed fraction (PF). Using Monte Carlo simulations, we consider a simple geometry of accretion flow and test the possibility of simultaneous presence of a large luminosity amplification due the geometrical beaming and a high PF. We argue that these factors largely exclude each other and only a negligible fraction of strongly beamed ULX pulsars can show PF above 10 per cent. Discrepancy between this conclusion and current observations indicates that pulsating ULXs are not strongly beamed and their apparent luminosity is close to the actual one.
The phytohormone ethylene has numerous effects on plant growth and development. Its immediate precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), is a non-proteinogenic amino acid produced by ACC ...SYNTHASE (ACS). ACC is often used to induce ethylene responses. Here, we demonstrate that ACC exhibits ethylene-independent signaling in Arabidopsis thaliana reproduction. By analyzing an acs octuple mutant with reduced seed set, we find that ACC signaling in ovular sporophytic tissue is involved in pollen tube attraction, and promotes secretion of the pollen tube chemoattractant LURE1.2. influx in octuple mutant ovules rescues LURE1.2 secretion. These findings uncover a novel ACC function and provide insights for unraveling new physiological implications of ACC in plants.
Glutamate receptor-like channels (GLRs) play vital roles in various physiological processes in plants, such as wound response, stomatal aperture control, seed germination, root development, innate ...immune response, pollen tube growth, and morphogenesis. Despite the importance of GLRs, knowledge about their molecular organization is limited. Here we use X-ray crystallography and single-particle cryo-EM to solve structures of the Arabidopsis thaliana GLR3.4. Our structures reveal the tetrameric assembly of GLR3.4 subunits into a three-layer domain architecture, reminiscent of animal ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs). However, the non-swapped arrangement between layers of GLR3.4 domains, binding of glutathione through S-glutathionylation of cysteine C205 inside the amino-terminal domain clamshell, unique symmetry, inter-domain interfaces, and ligand specificity distinguish GLR3.4 from representatives of the iGluR family and suggest distinct features of the GLR gating mechanism. Our work elaborates on the principles of GLR architecture and symmetry and provides a molecular template for deciphering GLR-dependent signaling mechanisms in plants.

We consider the effect of disorder on the spectrum of quasiparticles in the point-node and nodal-line superconductors. Due to the anisotropic dispersion of quasiparticles disorder scattering may ...render the Hamiltonian describing these excitations non-Hermitian. Depending on the dimensionality of the system, we show that the nodes in the spectrum are replaced by Fermi arcs or Fermi areas bounded by exceptional points or exceptional lines, respectively. These features are illustrated by first considering a model of a proximity-induced superconductor in an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetal, where a Fermi arc in the gap bounded by exceptional points can be realized. We next show that the interplay between disorder and supercurrents can give rise to a 2D Fermi surface bounded by exceptional lines in three-dimensional (3D) nodal superconductors.
