Estimates of acquiescent response bias derived from previously published, large-scale cross-cultural surveys that used Likert-type response scales are compared. Substantial evidence for convergent ...validity is found, particularly in relation to the surveys that measured value preferences. High bias in responses to personally relevant items is found in nations that are high on family collectivism and on a preference for increased uncertainty avoidance. High bias in responses to descriptions of others is found in nations low in uncertainty avoidance. These findings suggest that national indicators of acquiescence have substantive cultural meaning and should not be eliminated from nation-level analyses but rather built into analyses of cultural dynamics.
To estimate the relationship of initial pharmacotherapy with methadone or morphine and length of stay (LOS) in infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) admitted to the neonatal intensive care ...unit (NICU).
From the Pediatrix Clinical Data Warehouse database, we identified all infants born at ≥36 weeks of gestation between 2011 and 2015 who were diagnosed with NAS (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision code 779.5) and treated with methadone or morphine in the first 7 days of life. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to quantify the association between initial treatment and LOS after adjusting for maternal age, maternal race/ethnicity, maternal drug use, maternal smoking, gestational age, small for gestational age status, inborn status, and discharge year.
We identified a total of 7667 eligible infants, including 1187 treated with methadone (15%) and 6480 treated with morphine (85%). Birth weight, gestational age, and sex were similar in the 2 groups. Methadone treatment was associated with a 22% shorter median LOS (18 days IQR, 11-30 days vs 23 days IQR, 16-33; P < .001) and a 19% shorter median NICU stay (17 days IQR, 10-29 days vs 21 days IQR, 14-36 days; P < .001). After adjustment, methadone was associated with a shorter LOS (hazard ratio for discharge, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.11-1.37; P < .001)
Among infants born at ≥36 weeks of gestation with NAS, initial methadone treatment was associated with a shorter LOS compared with morphine treatment. Future prospective comparative effectiveness trials to treat infants with NAS are needed to verify this observation.
Endometriosis is a common chronic estrogen-dependent gynecological disease affecting 10% of women in their reproductive age. It is characterized by proliferation of functional endometrial glands and ...stroma outside the uterine cavity. In the present study, we used mass spectrometry-based lipidomics to investigate the alterations in serum lipid profiles of mice induced with endometriosis. We identified several dysregulated lipids such as phosphatidylcholines, sphingomyelins, phosphatidylethanolamines, and triglycerides and show that triglycerides may be due to a general inflammatory condition in the peritoneum. We also show that in addition to phosphatidylcholine alteration, there is also an effect in the ratio of phosphatidylcholine/phosphatidylethanolamine in serum of mice induced with the disease and that this change may be due to increased expression of the phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase gene. The study provides new insight into the etiology of endometriosis.
Meningitis is a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates. Clinicians frequently use the presence of positive blood cultures to determine whether neonates should undergo lumbar ...puncture. Abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) parameters are often used to predict neonatal meningitis and determine length and type of antibiotic therapy in neonates with a positive blood culture and negative CSF culture.
We evaluated the first lumbar puncture of 9111 neonates at > or =34 weeks' estimated gestational age from 150 NICUs, managed by the Pediatrix Medical Group, Inc. CSF culture results were compared with results of blood cultures and CSF parameters (white blood cells WBCs, glucose, and protein) to establish the concordance of these values in culture-proven meningitis. CSF cultures positive for coagulase-negative staphylococci and other probable contaminants, as well as fungal and viral pathogens, were excluded from analyses.
Meningitis was confirmed by culture in 95 (1.0%) neonates. Of the 95 patients with meningitis, 92 had a documented blood culture. Only 57 (62%) of 92 patients had a concomitant-positive blood culture; 35 (38%) of 92 had a negative blood culture. In neonates with both positive blood and CSF cultures, the organisms isolated were discordant in 2 (3.5%) of 57 cases. In each case, the CSF pathogen required different antimicrobial therapy than the blood pathogen. For culture-proven meningitis, CSF WBC counts of >0 cells per mm3 had sensitivity at 97% and specificity at 11%. CSF WBC counts of >21 cells per mm3 had sensitivity at 79% and specificity at 81%. Culture-proven meningitis was not diagnosed accurately by CSF glucose or by protein.
Neonatal meningitis frequently occurs in the absence of bacteremia and in the presence of normal CSF parameters. No single CSF value can reliably exclude the presence of meningitis in neonates. The CSF culture is critical to establishing the diagnosis of neonatal meningitis.
Antenatal exposure to methadone or buprenorphine often causes neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in newborns. However, comparative effects on affected infants' hospital courses are inconclusive. We ...sought to estimate the relationship of antenatal exposure with methadone or buprenorphine and infants' length of stay among hospitalized infants with NAS.
This was a retrospective cohort study of hospitalized infants with NAS with either maternal exposure. Eligible infants were singleton infants born ⩾36 weeks' gestation and diagnosed with NAS<7 days of age between 2011 and 2014 in the Pediatrix Clinical Data Warehouse. Infant with congenital anomalies and those of multiple gestation were excluded.
Of 3364 eligible infants, 2202 (65%) were exposed to methadone and 1162 (34%) to buprenorphine. Infants exposed to buprenorphine had a lower rate of pharmacologic treatment for NAS (88 vs 91%, P<0.001). Median length of hospital stay was shorter among infants exposed to buprenorphine (21 days (inter-quartile range; 13-31) vs methadone (24 days (15-38), P<0.0001)). On multivariable Cox proportional hazard analyses, buprenorphine was associated with a shorter length of stay (hazard ratio (HR)=1.47 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.32-1.62, P<0.001) after controlling for maternal age, parity, race or ethnicity, prenatal care, smoking status, use of antidepressants, use of benzodiazepines, and infant gestational age, small for gestational age status, cesarean delivery, sex, out born status, type of pharmacotherapy, breast milk use, year and center. We observed similar results in model using infants matched 1:1 with propensity scores for antenatal medication exposure (HR 1.39 for buprenorphine, CI 1.32-1.62, P<0.001).
Among infants born ⩾36 weeks' gestation with NAS, antenatal buprenorphine exposure was associated with a decreased length of stay relative to antenatal methadone exposure.

A meta-analysis of conformity studies using an Asch-type line judgment task

was conducted to investigate whether the level of conformity has changed over time and whether it is related ...cross-culturally to individualism-collectivism. The literature search produced 133 studies drawn from 17 countries. An analysis of U.S. studies found that conformity has declined since the 1950s. Results from 3 surveys were used to assess a country's individualism-collectivism, and for each survey the measures were found to be significantly related to conformity. Collectivist countries tended to show higher levels of conformity than individualist countries. Conformity research must attend more to cultural variables and to their role in the processes involved in social influence.
Evidence suggests core autism trait consistency in older children, but development of these traits is variable in early childhood. The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) measures autism‐related traits ...and broader autism phenotype, with two age‐dependent forms in childhood (preschool, 2.5–4.5 years; school age, 4–18 years). Score consistency has been observed within forms, though reliability across forms has not been evaluated. Using data from the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program (n = 853), preschool, and school‐age SRS scores were collected via maternal report when children were an average of 3.0 and 5.8 years, respectively. We compared reproducibility of SRS total scores (T‐scores) and agreement above a clinically meaningful cutoff (T‐scores ≥ 60) and examined predictors of discordance in cutoff scores across forms. Participant scores across forms were similar (mean difference: 3.3 points; standard deviation: 7), though preschool scores were on average lower than school‐age scores. Most children (88%) were classified below the cutoff on both forms, and overall concordance was high (92%). However, discordance was higher in cohorts following younger siblings of autistic children (16%). Proportions of children with an autism diagnoses were also higher among those with discordant scores (27%) than among those with concordant scores (4%). Our findings indicate SRS scores are broadly reproducible across preschool and school‐age forms, particularly for capturing broader, nonclinical traits, but also suggest that greater variability of autism‐related traits in preschool‐age children may reduce reliability with later school‐age scores for those in the clinical range.

The Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) is a questionnaire used to measure traits and behaviors related to autism. Two SRS forms exist for children, the preschool form for younger children (2.5–4.5 years) and the school‐age form for older children (4–18 years). We found that SRS scores are fairly similar within individuals across these forms, but also that traits may unfold over time among those with neurodevelopmental diagnoses.
Candida infections are common and often fatal in infants and neonates. Anidulafungin has excellent activity against Candida species, but the pharmacokinetics (PK) and safety of the drug in infants ...and neonates are unknown. The object of our study was to determine the PK and safety of anidulafungin in infants and neonates at risk for invasive candidiasis. Intravenous anidulafungin (1.5 mg/kg/day maintenance dose) was administered to 15 infants and neonates over 3 to 5 days. Plasma samples were collected after the first dose and again after the third to fifth doses. The pharmacokinetic parameters of the drug were determined by noncompartmental analysis. Safety was assessed using National Cancer Institute common toxicity criteria. The study showed that drug exposure levels were similar between neonates and infants; the median areas under the concentration–time curve (range) was 75 (30–109) µg·h/ml and 98 (55–278) µg·h/ml (P = 0.12) for neonates and infants, respectively. No drug‐related serious adverse events were observed. The study results indicate that neonates and infants receiving 1.5 mg/kg/day have anidulafungin exposure levels similar to those in children receiving similar weight‐based dosing and in adult patients receiving 100 mg/day.

Temperaments are often regarded as biologically based psychological tendencies with intrinsic paths of development. It is argued that this definition applies to the personality traits of the ...five-factor model. Evidence for the endogenous nature of traits is summarized from studies of behavior genetics, parent-child relations, personality structure, animal personality, and the longitudinal stability of individual differences. New evidence for intrinsic maturation is offered from analyses of NEO Five-Factor Inventory scores for men and women age 14 and over in German, British, Spanish, Czech, and Turkish samples (
N
= 5,085). These data support strong conceptual links to child temperament despite modest empirical associations. The intrinsic maturation of personality is complemented by the culturally conditioned development of characteristic adaptations that express personality; interventions in human development are best addressed to these.
