The article discusses and analyzes approaches to translating singable texts. It presents a linguistic (prosodic, lexical and structural) analysis of the Slovenian translation of the musical Mamma ...Mia! The aim of the qualitative and quantitative study is to investigate the translation strategies used to produce a singable target text. The results of the analysis suggest that producing a prosodic match is a basic requirement, whereas the lexical, structural and/or poetic characteristics of the source text are subject to changes. Overall, the findings show that the function and the purpose of the translation play a crucial role in the prioritization of translation strategies.
Teaching (or learning) a foreign language is a complex, interdisciplinary undertaking. Teachers and students are required to tackle aspects of language that transcend its merely linguistic component. ...This article discusses the relationship between language, thought and culture, and explores some aspects of the integration of cultural content in the English classroom. To achieve these goals, a study is conducted that identifies the main stereotypes about Americans among Slovenian university students of English as a foreign language. The results of the research can be used as a means of questioning some frequent stereotypes about Americans, and thus contributing to the fulfilment of (sometimes seemingly abstract) curricular aims that emphasize the significance of intercultural communication, awareness of cultural variety, and intercultural sensitivity.

S korpusno analizo poskuša prepoznati načine tvorjenja feminativov in maskulinativov za poimenovanje poklicev ...ter obravnavati njihovo rabo. Raziskava se osredini predvsem na feminative v obeh jezikih in z vidika semantične preference in asociativnega pomena ugotavlja, do kakšne mere pri posameznih poklicih lahko govorimo o stilistični (ne)zaznamovanosti teh izrazov. S pomočjo korpusnih podatkov hkrati preverja, kako pogosto določene feminative in/ali maskulinative spremljajo stereotipne predstave o spolnih vlogah, videzu in značaju.
The study focuses on assessing the state of foreign phoneme acquisition by foreign language (FL) students at the end of their undergraduate studies. To determine whether they prioritise vowels over ...consonants, a perception experiment was devised that focuses on the phonemes in Standard Slovene and General British reported as most problematic for Slovene learners of English. Thirty-three Slovene students of English were tested, along with a positive and a negative control group (CG). A set of stimuli was tested using the AX discrimination method; the participants listened to 60 phonemic contrasts, played in a pseudo-randomised order. The results foregrounded the most problematic phonemes which act as perceptual magnets. Analysis shows that the students can discriminate foreign phonemes well, and that they consistently perform better in discriminating vocalic contrasts.
The paper discusses the testing/assessment of word-formation skills in thresholdlevel (B1) learners. To determine the suitability and use of productive gap-fill exercises at this level, an example of ...a word-formation exercise is addressed from the following perspectives: word frequency (corpus data), morphological complexity (morpheme types and wordformation processes), syntactic environments (typical sentence and/or phrase patterns), analysis of statistical data (facility values) and test-takers’ errors. The text also addresses some implications of the findings for the instruction of lexis.
Adopting
socio-cognitive validation framework, the present paper focuses on the syntactic and lexical complexity of listening comprehension subtests in three B2-level examinations: The City Guilds ...international examination in English, The First Certificate in English, and the General Matura in English. By analysing and interpreting the results obtained from different automated tools, the research aims to determine to what extent the three subtests are comparable. The results of the study suggest the unreliability of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as a sole mechanism for test comparisons.
Presented work focuses on the importance of unconformity that separates the Neogene infill from older Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks in the Croatian part of Pannonian Basin. Structure map of this ...horizon nearly represents the thickness map of the Neogene and Quaternary basin fill. Rock formations just below the unconformity are significantly weathered, which results in favourable petrophysical properties, making them interesting from the aspect of geoenergy potential. The pre-Neogene surface was constructed in 1:400,000 scale using publicly available subsurface maps of different scale and different level of detail. Harmonization and compilation of these maps enabled construction of a structured surface with near-vertical fault planes. Supplemental maps were constructed via basin modelling, showing the temperature distribution in the subsurface, potential source rock maturity near the mapped horizon, surface heat flow and geothermal gradient distribution. Constructed maps illustrate the importance of the mapped interval for regional planning of future geoenergy-related research..
