The influence of hydrogen on the mechanical behavior of the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) was examined through tensile and nanoindentation experiments on specimens hydrogenated via gaseous and ...electrochemical methods. Results show that the HEA's resistance to gaseous hydrogen embrittlement is better than that of two representative austenitic stainless steels, in spite of the fact that it absorbs a larger amount of hydrogen than the two steels. Reasons for this were discussed in terms of hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity mechanism and the critical amount of hydrogen required for it. These were further substantiated by additional experiments on electrochemically charged specimens.

Underlying diseases might be risk factors for poor prognosis in patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19); however, we still do not know whether these diseases are independent factors affecting ...prognosis, which type of underlying diseases are risk factors, and which type of clinical outcomes are affected. We retrospectively reviewed cohort data from 7,590 de-identified patients with COVID-19 who were diagnosed using severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 RNA polymerase chain reaction test up to May 15, 2020. We used linked-medical claims data provided by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service in South Korea. Underlying diseases were identified using the diagnostic codes in the patients' files from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. The total mortality rate was 3.0% in patients with COVID-19. After adjusting for age, sex, and concomitant chronic conditions, we found that congestive heart failure, chronic pulmonary diseases, diabetes without chronic complications, renal diseases, and malignancy were factors that significantly increased the cost of treatment. Cerebrovascular disease, chronic pulmonary disease, and paralysis were found to be independent factors significant in prolonging hospital stay. Diabetes with chronic complications was independently associated with intensive care unit admission. In addition, underlying congestive heart failure (odds ratio OR, 1.724; P = 0.003), dementia (OR, 1.598; P = 0.012), diabetes with and without chronic complications (OR, 1.821; P = 0.002 and OR, 1.518; P = 0.022, respectively), renal disease (OR, 2.299; P = 0.002), and malignancy (OR, 1.529; P = 0.039) were significant factors associated with death, even after adjustments. Underlying diseases were significant independent factors of the poor prognosis in patients with COVID-19. The effects were variable according to the type of underlying disease and clinical outcome. Therefore, patients with COVID-19 with underlying diseases should be monitored more closely because they are more at risk of a poor prognosis.
Body mass index (BMI) is known to be closely related to the prognosis and mortality of various diseases. The aim of our study was to evaluate differences in post-treatment overall survival (OS) ...according to BMI with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to understand the meaning of BMI. Among the records of 10,578 HCC patients registered at the Korean Central Cancer Registry from 2008 through 2014, we selected Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) 0, A, and B staged HCC patients (n = 4,926). HCC patients showed a good prognosis in the order of overweight, normal weight, obesity, and underweight. However, comparing normal-weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m
) to overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m
) after propensity score matching (PSM), there was no significant difference in OS (p = 0.153). Overweight males had a better prognosis than normal-weight males (p = 0.014), but, normal-weight females had a better prognosis than overweight. To determine the gender-specific OS differences, we examined the differences according to the HCC treatment type. In males, overweight patients had better OS after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) (p = 0.039) than normal-weight, but not after surgical resection (p = 0.618) nor radiofrequency ablation (p = 0.553). However, in females, all of those HCC treatments resulted in significantly better OS in normal-weight patients than overweight. In patients with HCC of BCLC stages 0-B, unlike females, overweight males had a better prognosis than normal-weight, especially among TACE-treated patients. Our results carefully suggest that the meaning of normal BMI in patients with HCC may have gender difference.
The influence of annealing on the constitutive stress-strain response of nanocrystalline (nc) CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) was investigated through a series of nanoindentation experiments ...using five different three-sided pyramidal indenters. The nc HEA, produced by high-pressure torsion (HPT), was subjected to annealing at 450 °C for 1 and 10 h. Microstructural analysis using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that three different nano-scale precipitates (NiMn-, FeCo-, and Co-rich phases) form in the primary single-phase matrix of nc HEA after annealing. The strain-dependent plastic flow response of nc HEA pre- and post-annealing was estimated using the indentation strain and constraint factor, revealing a significant strain softening in nc HEA, which becomes pronounced after annealing. TEM analysis of the deformed material underneath the indenter suggests that the plastic deformation aids in the dissolution of the annealing-induced intermetallic precipitates, which could be the mechanism for the pronounced softening. The dissolution mechanism was rationalized by the destabilization of precipitates during plastic deformation due to the increase in interface energy.

The present study aimed to investigate the prognostic importance of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Among 322 patients diagnosed as ...having definite, probable, or possible ALS at a single tertiary hospital, 194 patients were included in the final analysis. Patients were divided into three groups (T1, T2, and T3) according to the tertile of their NLR. Survival rate was significantly lower in T3 compared to the other groups (log-rank test; T1 vs. T3, p = 0.009; T2 vs. T3, p = 0.008). Median survival duration was 37.0 (24.0-56.0), 32.5 (19.5-51.2), and 22.0 (17.0-38.0) months in T1, T2, and T3, respectively. In a multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, the hazard ratio of age at onset, bulbar-onset, and NLR (T3/T1) was 1.04 (1.02-1.06, p < 0.001), 1.68 (1.10-2.57, p = 0.015), and 1.60 (1.01-2.51, p = 0.041), respectively. A high baseline NLR may serve as a useful indicator for short survival duration in patients with ALS.
Ultrathin crystalline silicon is widely used as an active material for high-performance, flexible, and stretchable electronics, from simple passive and active components to complex integrated ...circuits, due to its excellent electrical and mechanical properties. However, in contrast to conventional silicon wafer-based devices, ultrathin crystalline silicon-based electronics require an expensive and rather complicated fabrication process. Although silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers are commonly used to obtain a single layer of crystalline silicon, they are costly and difficult to process. Therefore, as an alternative to SOI wafers-based thin layers, here, a simple transfer method is proposed for printing ultrathin multiple crystalline silicon sheets with thicknesses between 300 nm to 13 µm and high areal density (>90%) from a single mother wafer. Theoretically, the silicon nano/micro membrane can be generated until the mother wafer is completely consumed. In addition, the electronic applications of silicon membranes are successfully demonstrated through the fabrication of a flexible solar cell and flexible NMOS transistor arrays.
Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide health issue especially in women. Serum vitamin D concentrations vary depending on the weather. However, the ideal vitamin D supplementation strategy related to ...weather remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the relationship between climate factors and serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D 25(OH)D concentrations. This study included 11,272 women aged 20-79 who visited a health promotion center for annual checkups between January 2013 and December 2015. We reviewed medical records and collected daily meteorological data. We analyzed the association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and climate factors using simple and multiple regression models and then predicted serum 25(OH)D concentration using multiple fractional polynomial models. The median age of the participants was 51 years (20-79 years), and the mean serum 25(OH)D level was 17.4 ± 8.6 ng/mL. The serum 25(OH)D concentration was lower in young women than in older women. The proportions of women with adequate 25(OH)D levels were 14.9% and 47.0% in the age groups 20-29 and 70-79, respectively. The maximum level of predicted log 25(OH)D was found in September, and the minimum was found in January. In multiple regression analysis, age and monthly mean temperature were associated with 25(OH)D concentrations. Serum 25(OH)D level was predicted using the following formula: log (25(OH)D) = 2.144 + 0.009 × age + 0.018 × ((temperature + 12.4)/10)2 (P < 0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.091). Serum 25(OH)D concentrations changed according to air temperature. An adequate strategy for vitamin D supplementation, based on air temperature, is necessary to maintain healthy serum 25(OH)D levels.

The study included 7590 de-identified patients, who were confirmed to have COVID-19 using the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 RNA-PCR tests conducted up to May 15, 2020; we used the linked-medical claims data provided by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. Asthma and asthma severity (steps suggested by the Global Initiative for Asthma) were defined using the diagnostic code and history of asthma medication usage.
Among 7590 COVID-19 patients, 218 (2.9%) had underlying asthma. The total medical cost associated with COVID-19 patients with underlying asthma was significantly higher than that of other patients. Mortality rate for COVID-19 patients with underlying asthma (7.8%) was significantly higher than that of other patients (2.8%; p<0.001). However, asthma was not an independent risk factor for the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 after adjustment, nor did asthma medication use and asthma severity affect the clinical outcomes of COVID-19. However, use of oral short-acting β
-agonists was an independent factor to increase the total medical cost burden. Patients with step 5 asthma showed significant prolonged duration of admission compared to those with step 1 asthma in both univariate and multivariate analysis.
Asthma led to poor outcomes of COVID-19; however, underlying asthma, use of asthma medication and asthma severity were not independent factors for poor clinical outcomes of COVID-19, generally.
The effect of pre-strain on the resistance to gaseous hydrogen embrittlement of CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) was investigated through mechanical testing and thermal desorption analysis. The ...results reveal that prior plastic deformation does not affect either the hydrogen contents or the excellent hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the HEA.
