Background and Objectives
COVID‐19‐related quarantine and stress have likely escalated the crisis of Internet addiction. This study aimed to determine the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on Internet ...use and related risk factors among the general public in China.
Methods
A large‐sample cross‐sectional online survey was conducted from March 24 to April 30, 2020, in China, and 20,472 participants completed the survey. We investigated the prevalence and severity of Internet addiction based on the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), and explored the risk factors related to increases in time spent on Internet use and severity of Internet addiction, as well as severe Internet addiction.
Results
The overall prevalence of Internet addiction was 36.7% among the general population during the pandemic, and that of severe Internet addiction was 2.8%, according to IAT scores. Time spent on recreational Internet use had significantly increased during the pandemic, and almost half of participants reported increases in the severity of Internet addiction. Risk factors for increases in time spent on Internet use and severity of Internet addiction and severe Internet addiction included having fewer social supporters, perceiving pressure and impact on mental health status due to COVID‐19, and being over‐engaged in playing videogames.
Discussion and Conclusions
The COVID‐19 pandemic adversely impacted Internet use and increased the prevalence and severity of Internet addiction among the general population in China, especially in vulnerable populations.
Scientific Significance
This study provides evidence for policymakers to refine public health policies to control the pandemic and make efforts to provide population‐specific prevention and interventions for people at risk of developing Internet addiction. (Am J Addict 2021;00:00–00)
In this paper, we investigate resource allocation algorithm design for multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) systems employing a full-duplex (FD) base station for serving multiple ...half-duplex (HD) downlink and uplink users simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is obtained from the solution of a non-convex optimization problem for the maximization of the weighted sum system throughput. We apply monotonic optimization to develop an optimal joint power and subcarrier allocation policy. The optimal resource allocation policy serves as a system performance benchmark due to its high computational complexity. Furthermore, a suboptimal iterative scheme based on successive convex approximation is proposed to strike a balance between computational complexity and optimality. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed suboptimal algorithm achieves a close-to-optimal performance. In addition, FD MC-NOMA systems employing the proposed resource allocation algorithms provide a substantial system throughput improvement compared with conventional HD multicarrier orthogonal multiple access (MC-OMA) systems and other baseline schemes. In addition, our results unveil that FD MC-NOMA systems enable a fairer resource allocation compared with traditional HD MC-OMA systems.
A nicked reaction: The title reaction of terminal alkynes with non‐activated secondary alkyl iodides and bromides was accomplished for the first time. This reaction provides a new and practical ...approach for the synthesis of substituted alkynes (see scheme; cod=cyclo‐1,5‐octadiene).
Pandemics have become more frequent and more complex during the twenty-first century. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following pandemics is a significant public health concern. We sought to ...provide a reliable estimate of the worldwide prevalence of PTSD after large-scale pandemics as well as associated risk factors, by a systematic review and meta-analysis. We systematically searched the MedLine, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, CNKI, WanFang, medRxiv, and bioRxiv databases to identify studies that were published from the inception up to August 23, 2020, and reported the prevalence of PTSD after pandemics including sudden acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), H1N1, Poliomyelitis, Ebola, Zika, Nipah, Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), H5N1, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A total of 88 studies were included in the analysis, with 77 having prevalence information and 70 having risk factors information. The overall pooled prevalence of post-pandemic PTSD across all populations was 22.6% (95% confidence interval (CI): 19.9-25.4%, I
: 99.7%). Healthcare workers had the highest prevalence of PTSD (26.9%; 95% CI: 20.3-33.6%), followed by infected cases (23.8%: 16.6-31.0%), and the general public (19.3%: 15.3-23.2%). However, the heterogeneity of study findings indicates that results should be interpreted cautiously. Risk factors including individual, family, and societal factors, pandemic-related factors, and specific factors in healthcare workers and patients for post-pandemic PTSD were summarized and discussed in this systematic review. Long-term monitoring and early interventions should be implemented to improve post-pandemic mental health and long-term recovery.
In conjunction with the classical functions of regulating intestinal, bone, and kidney calcium and phosphorus absorption, as well as bone mineralization of vitamin D, the population-based association ...between low vitamin D status and increased cancer risk is now generally accepted. Inflammation is causally related to oncogenesis. It is widely thought that vitamin D plays an important role in the modulation of the inflammation system by regulating the production of inflammatory cytokines and immune cells, which are crucial for the pathogenesis of many immune-related diseases. Mechanistic studies have shown that vitamin D influences inflammatory processes involved in cancer progression, including cytokines, prostaglandins, MAP kinase phosphatase 5 (MKP5), the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway, and immune cells. Multiple studies have shown that vitamin D has the potential to inhibit tumor development by interfering with the inflammation system. The present review summarizes recent studies of the mechanisms of vitamin D on regulating the inflammation system, which contributes to its potential for cancer prevention and therapy. This review helps answer whether inflammation mediates a causal relationship between vitamin D and tumorigenesis.
Since their discovery, topological insulators are expected to be ideal spintronic materials owing to the spin currents carried by surface states with spin-momentum locking. However, the bulk doping ...problem remains an obstacle that hinders such an application. In this work, we predict that a newly discovered family of topological materials, the Weyl semimetals, exhibits a large intrinsic spin Hall effect that can be utilized to generate and detect spin currents. Our ab initio calculations reveal a large spin Hall conductivity in the TaAs family of Weyl materials. Considering the low charge conductivity of semimetals, Weyl semimetals are believed to present a larger spin Hall angle (the ratio of the spin Hall conductivity over the charge conductivity) than that of conventional spin Hall systems such as the 4d and 5d transition metals. The spin Hall effect originates intrinsically from the bulk band structure of Weyl semimetals, which exhibit a large Berry curvature and spin-orbit coupling, so the bulk carrier problem in the topological insulators is naturally avoided. Our work not only paves the way for employing Weyl semimetals in spintronics, but also proposes a new guideline for searching for the spin Hall effect in various topological materials.

Itch, in particular chronic forms, has been widely recognized as an important clinical problem, but much less is known about the mechanisms of itch in comparison with other sensory modalities such as ...pain. Recently, considerable progress has been made in dissecting the circuit mechanisms of itch at both the spinal and supraspinal levels. Major components of the spinal neural circuit underlying both chemical and mechanical itch have now been identified, along with the circuits relaying ascending transmission and the descending modulation of itch. In this review, we summarize the progress in elucidating the neural circuit mechanism of itch at spinal and supraspinal levels.
In this study, the author focuses on modeling and optimizing a freight routing problem in a road-rail intermodal transportation network that combines the hub-and-spoke and point-to-point structures. ...The operations of road transportation are time flexible, while rail transportation has fixed departure times. The reliability of the routing is improved by modeling the uncertainty of the road-rail intermodal transportation network. Parameters that are influenced by the real-time status of the network, including capacities, travel times, loading and unloading times, and container trains’ fixed departure times, are considered uncertain in the routing decision-making. Based on fuzzy set theory, triangular fuzzy numbers are employed to formulate the uncertain parameters as well as resulting uncertain variables. Green routing is also discussed by treating the minimization of carbon dioxide emissions as an objective. First of all, a multiobjective fuzzy mixed integer nonlinear programming model is established for the specific reliable and green routing problem. Then, defuzzification, linearization, and weighted sum method are implemented to present a crisp linear model whose global optimum solutions can be effectively obtained by the exact solution algorithm run by mathematical programming software. Finally, a numerical case is given to demonstrate how the proposed methods work. In the case, sensitivity analysis is adopted to reveal the effects of uncertainty on the routing optimization. Fuzzy simulation is then performed to help decision makers to select the best crisp route plan by determining the best confidence level shown in the fuzzy chance constraints.
This study proposes an optimization-based weather-yield model to reduce the basis risk of weather-based index insurance. This weather-yield model helps us capture the growing season's monthly ...variation as it involves monthly explanatory weather indices. In addition, it can capture additional extreme weather effects by including extreme cooling or heating weather indices. This study presents an innovative machine learning framework incorporating optimization approaches to ensure the parsimony of weather index models and the accuracy of crop yield predictions, which can be integrated into the conventional policy design and pricing process. The advantages of this modeling approach and the effectiveness of weather index-based insurance based on this approach in reducing basis risk and revenue risk are demonstrated by applying county-level yield data for mid-season rice in the Anhui province, China.
Osteosarcoma is highly malignant. The migration, invasion, and chemoresistance contribute to poor prognosis of osteosarcoma. Research reported that endogenous bornavirus-like nucleoprotein 3 ...pseudogene (EBLN3P) promotes the progression of osteosarcoma.
In this study, the expression of EBLN3P in osteosarcoma tissue with different methotrexate (MTX) treatment responses was measured. Osteosarcoma cell lines with MTX resistance were constructed, and bioinformatic analysis was performed to explore the potential involved targets and pathways.
Higher EBLN3P was associated with MTX resistance. Downregulation of LncEBLN3P decreased the MTX resistance of osteosarcoma cells by sponging miR-200a-3p, an important microRNA that affects epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The decreased miR-200a-3p resulted in the upregulation of its target gene O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT), which in turn promoted the EMT process of osteosarcoma cells. Further analysis confirmed that the loss of OGT and over-expression of miR-200a-3p could partly abolish the MTX resistance induced by LncEBLN3P.
LncEBLN3P is upregulated in osteosarcoma and increases the MTX resistance in osteosarcoma cells through downregulating miR-200a-3p, which in turn promoted the EMT process of osteosarcoma cells by increasing the OGT.
