The Compact Accelerator-driven Neutron Source (CANS), especially the transportable neutron source is longing for high effectiveness shielding material. For this reason, new shielding material is ...researched in this investigation. The component of shielding material is designed and many samples are manufactured. Then the attenuation detection experiments were carried out. In the detections, the dead time of the detector appeases when the proton beam is too strong. To grasp the linear range and nonlinear range of the detector, two currents of proton are employed in Pb attenuation detections. The transmission ratio of new shielding material, polyethylene (PE), PE + Pb, BPE + Pb is detected under suitable current of proton. Since the results of experimental neutrons and γ-rays appear as together, the MCNP and PHITS simulations are applied to assisting the analysis. The new shielding material could reduce of the weight and volume compared with BPE + Pb and PE + Pb.
The electron spin resonance (ESR) system which covers the magnetic field region up to 16 T, the quasicontinuous frequency region from 60 to 700 GHz, the temperature region from 1.8 to 4.2 K, and the ...hydrostatic pressure region up to 1.1 GPa has been developed. This is the first pulsed high-field and multifrequency ESR system with the pressure region over 1 GPa as far as we know. Transmission ESR spectra under hydrostatic pressure can be obtained by combining a piston-cylinder-type pressure cell and the pulsed magnetic field ESR apparatus. The pressure cell consists of a NiCrAl cylinder and sapphire or zirconia inner parts. The use of sapphire or zirconia as inner parts enables us to observe ESR under pressure because these inner parts have high transmittance for the electromagnetic wave with millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. We have successfully applied this system for the pressure dependence measurements of an isolated spin system NiSnCl(6)6H(2)O up to 1.1 GPa. It was found that the single ion anisotropy parameter D of this compound strongly depends on pressure. The parameter D is approximately proportional to the pressure up to 0.75 GPa, and the relation between D and the pressure can be used for the pressure calibration of this high-field and high-pressure ESR system.

Neutron diffraction is well known to be a useful technique for measuring a bulk texture of metallic materials taking advantage of a large penetration depth of the neutron beam. However, this ...technique has not been widely utilized for the texture measurement because large facilities like a reactor or a large accelerator are required in general. In contrast, RANS (Riken Accelerator-driven Compact Neutron Source) has been developed as a neutron source which can be used easily in laboratories. In this study, texture evolution in steel sheets with plastic deformation was successfully measured using RANS. The results show the capability of the compact neutron source for the analysis of the crystal structure of metallic materials, which leads us to a better understanding of plastic deformation behavior.

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) offers the unique capability to collide polarized protons at high energies. One of the highlights of the polarized ...proton program performed at s=500GeV is that it affords the direct measurement of sea quark contribution to the proton spin via W-boson production through the measurement of the parity violating single spin asymmetry. A new trigger electronics system for forward muons, which is especially capable of W-boson detection, was developed for the PHENIX experiment. The trigger was installed as an additional electronic circuit, and it was connected in parallel with the existing cathode readout electronics of the muon tracking chamber.
