This study was performed to test the association between Helicobacter pylori (HP) and periodontal disease (PD).
This was a case-control study in a comprehensive hospital, including all patients with ...newly diagnosed PD between 2012 and 2014 as cases and all patients without PD as controls, thorough periodontal examinations. Those who tested positive for HP were examined by means of polymerase chain reaction. Single and multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the data using SPSS 19.0 software.
This case-control study included 212 Han Chinese non-smoking adults. The results indicated that HP-positive status significantly increased the risk of PD (2.63 times higher (odds ratio OR=2.63; 95% confidence interval CI=1.48-4.67). After adjustment for age, sex, level of education, physical exercise, body mass index, and history of alcohol and diabetes mellitus, this association remained significantly (OR=2.82, 95% CI=1.55-5.13).
PD might be associated with HP infection in adults and HP infection may be a significant and independent risk factor for PD.
Objective:
To determine the safety of hepatectomy after combined lenvatinib and anti-PD-1 preoperative systemic therapy (PST) in patients with marginally resectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
...Background:
PST followed by hepatectomy (PSTH) is an emerging treatment for HCC. However, the impact of PST with lenvatinib plus anti-PD-1 antibodies on surgical safety is unknown.
Methods:
Medical records from consecutive patients with marginally resectable advanced HCC who underwent hepatectomy after PST with lenvatinib and anti-PD-1 antibodies between January 2018 and August 2021 were retrieved from a prospectively designed database. Propensity score matching (1:2) was performed with a further 2318 HCC patients who underwent upfront hepatectomy (UH) without initial antitumor treatment during the same period.
Results:
In total, 49 and 98 matched patients were included in the PSTH and UH groups, respectively. Compared to the UH group, individuals in the PSTH group experienced more intraoperative blood loss, blood transfusions, and longer postoperative hospital stays. Moreover, posthepatectomy liver failure was more common in the PSTH group, who also had worse albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) scores on postoperative days 1–7. A significantly greater amount of drainage was also required in the PSTH group. However, the 30-day morbidity and 90-day mortality were similar among the two groups. Additionally, the duration of surgery, use of hepatic inflow occlusion during surgery, and the levels of postoperative inflammation-based markers were not statistically different between the two groups.
Conclusions:
Despite more intraoperative and postoperative adverse events, PSTH had comparable 30-day morbidity and 90-day mortality as UH. Thus, PSTH appears to be a viable treatment option for marginally resectable HCC patients with careful preoperative evaluation.
The platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent oxaliplatin displays a wide range of antitumor activities. To date, no detailed data are available about the effects of oxaliplatin on hepatocellular ...carcinoma (HCC) cells. Herein, the anti-proliferation effects of oxaliplatin on HCCLM3 and Hep3B cells in vitro and in vivo are studied.
Cell viability was assessed by an MTT assay and apoptosis by flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy. Apoptosis-related proteins in HCCLM3 cells were evaluated by microarray analysis, quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR assay and western blotting. The effect of oxaliplatin was also studied in vivo using a xenograft model.
Oxaliplatin inhibited the growth of HCCLM3 and Hep3B cells. Using flow cytometry, transmission electron microscopy and the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay, we found that apoptosis was the main mechanism by which oxaliplatin inhibited tumor progression. Microarray analysis, quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR and western blot analysis further demonstrated downregulation of the anti-apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL and upregulation of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax during oxaliplatin-induced apoptosis.
The anti-proliferation effect of oxaliplatin in HCC cells is due to induction of apoptosis. Therefore, oxaliplatin may be an effective treatment for HCC and its use merits further in-depth investigation.
Purpose
– The purpose of this study is to delineate the factors influencing the use of financial derivatives by non-financial firms in managing their exchange rate exposure. In total, 219 ...non-financial firms are surveyed in regard to their financial hedging decision.
Design/methodology/approach
– This study is conducted via a survey and the questionnaires were sent to the treasurers and financial controller of the firms. Descriptive analysis is employed to assess the profiles of the respondents. Then, factor analysis is carried out to determine the factors influencing the use of financial derivatives in Malaysia.
Findings
– The results indicate that the hedging decision of non-financial firms is influenced by their assertive level toward the market and regulators and also how flexible they are for derivative instruments. The intellectual capability that firms acquire to perform hedging strategies is also vital in influencing them to make hedging decision.
Practical implications
– The insights of this survey would assist and prepare firms to hedge their exchange rate risk by employing financial derivatives. Knowing the influences of firms' adoption of currency derivatives would allow policy makers to formulate their policies in boosting the liquidity of Malaysian derivative market.
Originality/value
– This study presents findings on the factors influencing the execution of financial hedging by non-financial firms in Malaysia. Survey data are used to seek for the feedback from the market players in order to provide empirical evidence on the corporate use of financial hedging.
The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of sorafenib on tumor growth, recurrence and metastasis after curative resection of liver cancer.
SMMC-7721 and HCCLM3 liver tumors, each with ...different metastatic potential and basal phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK) levels, were orthotopically implanted into 56 nude mice. Mice were divided into a treatment sub study and a prevention sub study.
In the treatment sub study, tumor volumes in the high pERK-expressing HCCLM3 model were 2.58 ? 0.83 and 0.38 ? 0.09 cm(3) without and with sorafenib, respectively (p < 0.001). The corresponding volumes in the low pERK-expressing SMMC-7721 model were 1.36 ? 0.24 and 0.24 ? 0.14 cm(3) (p < 0.001), respectively. Sorafenib inhibited HCCLM3 cell proliferation and decreased tumor angiogenesis, but did not inhibit proliferation in the SMMC-7721 model. In the prevention sub study, intrahepatic recurrent tumor volumes were 1.96 ? 0.45 and 0.18 ? 0.24 cm(3) (p < 0.001); lung metastasis frequencies were 100 and 0% (p = 0.005); and lifespans were 36 ? 3 and 46 ? 5 days (p = 0.002) in the control and sorafenib subgroups, respectively.
Sorafenib inhibits tumor growth and prevents metastatic recurrence after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma in nude mice. The effect of sorafenib does not exclusively depend on high levels of pERK in tumors.
Purpose Immunosuppressive therapy after liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the major contributory factors for HCC recurrence and metastasis. Sirolimus, a potent ...immunosuppressant, has been reported to be an effective inhibitor in a variety of tumors. The present study is designed to explore whether sirolimus could block the growth and metastatic progression of HCC. Methods MHCC97H cells were used as targets to explore the effect of sirolimus on cell cycle progression, apoptosis, proliferation, and its antiangiogenic mechanism. LCI-D20, a highly metastatic model of human HCC in nude mice, was also used as the model tumor to explore the effect of sirolimus on tumor growth and metastatic progression. Results In vitro, sirolimus induced cell cycle arrest at the G1 checkpoint and blocked proliferation of MHCC97H cells but did not induce apoptosis. In vivo, sirolimus prevented tumor growth and metastatic progression in LCI-D20. Intratumoral microvessel density and circulating levels of VEGF in tumor-bearing mice were also significantly reduced in sirolimus treatment group. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that sirolimus down-regulated the mRNA expression of VEGF and HIF-1a, but not of bFGF, and TGF-b in MHCC97H cells. Furthermore, western blot analysis confirmed that sirolimus also decreased expression of HIF-1a at protein level, in parallel with the down-regulation of the levels of VEGF protein excretion in a time-dependent manner as compared to untreated control cells following anoxia. Conclusions The immunosuppressive macrolide sirolimus prevents the growth and metastatic progression of HCC, and suppresses VEGF synthesis and secretion by downregulating HIF-1a expression. Sirolimus may be useful for clinical application in patients who received a liver transplant for HCC.

This article presents a case ...report of tibia and fibula fracture patient who failed the internal fixation surgery and successfully recovered after one course of percutaneous autologous platelet lysates injection.
Case description
The patient received an internal nickelclad breakage at 9 months post-surgery but reluctant to accept a second surgery, then autologous platelet lysates (APL) injection which is a less invasive method was recommended. The injections were carried once a week for three times. Radiologic evaluation was conducted every month until recovery.
Discussion and evaluation
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of tibia delayed union with breakage of the plate resolved with APL injection. Improved clinical evidence was observed at 4 and 6 months after injection. The patient got good bony union at 8 months post-injection. The patient didn’t feel any discomfort postinjection, no complications such as infection, refracture etc. were observed.
Conclusions
APL percutaneous injection could be a new therapeutic option for the treatment of nonunion or delayed healing fractures.
The aberrant expression of methyltransferase Set7/9 plays a role in various diseases. However, the contribution of Set7/9 in ischemic stroke remains unclear. Here, we show ischemic injury results in ...a rapid elevation of Set7/9, which is accompanied by the downregulation of Sirt5, a deacetylase reported to protect against injury. Proteomic analysis identifies the decrease of chromobox homolog 1 (Cbx1) in knockdown Set7/9 neurons. Mechanistically, Set7/9 promotes the binding of Cbx1 to H3K9me2/3 and forms a transcription repressor complex at the Sirt5 promoter, ultimately repressing Sirt5 transcription. Thus, the deacetylation of Sirt5 substrate, glutaminase, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of glutamine to glutamate and ammonia, is decreased, promoting glutaminase expression and triggering excitotoxicity. Blocking Set7/9 eliminates H3K9me2/3 from the Sirt5 promoter and normalizes Sirt5 expression and Set7/9 knockout efficiently ameliorates brain ischemic injury by reducing the accumulation of ammonia and glutamate in a Sirt5-dependent manner. Collectively, the Set7/9-Sirt5 axis may be a promising epigenetic therapeutic target.

As a recent developed climate policy, Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) have renewed attention to the importance ...of exploring temperature rise levels lower than 2 °C, in particular a long-term limit of 1.5 °C, compared to the preindustrial level. Nonetheless, achieving the 2 °C target under the current INDCs depends on dynamic socioeconomic development pathways. Therefore, this study conducts an integrated assessment of INDCs by taking into account different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). To that end, the CEEP-BIT research community develops the China’s Climate Change Integrated Assessment Model (C

IAM) to assess the climate change under SSPs in the context of with and without INDCs. Three SSPs, including “a green growth strategy” (SSP1), “a more middle-of-the-road development pattern” (SSP2) and “further fragmentation between regions” (SSP3) form the focus of this study. Results show that after considering INDCs, mitigation costs become very low and they have no evident positive changes in three SSPs. In 2100, a temperature rise would occur in SSP1-3, which is 3.20, 3.48 and 3.59 °C, respectively. There are long-term difficulties to keep warming well below 2 °C and pursue efforts toward 1.5 °C target even under INDCs. A drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is needed in order to mitigate potentially catastrophic climate change impacts. This work contributes on realizing the hard link between the earth and socioeconomic systems, as well as extending the economic models by coupling the global CGE model with the economic optimum growth model.
