When the diphthong is followed by a rhotic, specific phonetic and phonological problems arise, which is why this paper will focus on ‹-oir(e)›. After a brief overview of the metalinguistic data available on this variable, we will provide a cartographic representation of its realization in traditional rural dialects, as well as some more recent geolinguistic data on contemporary Canadian French based on crowd-sourcing surveys. The second part of the paper deals with a phonological problem. The /wɑ/ diphthong has a monophonematic status in Laurentian French. For instance, while the /ɑ/ ~ /ɔ/ opposition tends to be neutralized before /ʁ/ ('part' and 'port' becoming homophones), the second element of the diphthong in a word ending in ‹-oir(e)› never becomes ɔ and remains ɑ. But the system might be changing: the analysis of a corpus of Québécois songs, as well as recent crowdsourcing surveys, suggest that wɔʁ for ‹-oir(e)› has now become a possible realization.
L'évolution wε > wa de la diphtongue ‹oi› est un phénomène encore inabouti en français laurentien, sensible à tous les axes de la variation linguistique ainsi qu'au contexte phonétique. Cet article est consacré à ‹-oir(e)›, la position de la diphtongue devant rhotique posant des problèmes phonétiques et phonologiques particuliers. Après un bref tour d'horizon du discours métalinguistique sur cette variable, on offrira une représentation cartographique de sa réalisation dans les parlers traditionnels et quelques données aréologiques plus récentes sur le français canadien contemporain, basées sur des données d'enquêtes en ligne. La seconde partie de l'exposé sera consacrée à un problème phonologique. La diphtongue /wɑ/ a un statut monophonématique en français laurentien. En effet, on observe – entre autres – que l'opposition /ɑ/ ~ /ɔ/ tend à être neutralisée devant /ʁ/ ('part' et 'port' devenant homophones), alors que le second élément de la diphtongue d'un mot en ‹-oir(e)› ne se confond pas avec le ɔ d'un mot en ‹-or› et reste ɑ. Il se trouve toutefois que le système est peut-être en train de changer, comme l'analyse d'un corpus de chansons québécoises, ainsi que de récentes enquêtes en ligne, le suggèrent : wɔʁ pour ‹-oir(e)› est désormais une réalisation possible.
This article tackles the problem of recruiting volunteers in a world where available time is scarce. Presented here are the results of two studies conducted in sequence to understand the structural ...components of current volunteering and, subsequently, to know what motivates volunteers to get involved and their expectations toward organizations. Results show that volunteers make personal decisions to get involved and have to feel personally touched by the cause and the organizations dealing with this cause. They have expectations about the quality of their volunteering experience based on their feeling of making a difference, being useful, and having fun with others whether beneficiaries or volunteers. These results helped to frame a recruitment framework in two major phases. The first evaluates and improves an organization's internal and external ability to recruit, and retain volunteers, its perception in the community, and the desirability to be a volunteer. The second phase proposes a recruitment process.
Après un bref tour d’horizon historique de la géolinguistique du français au Canada, nous présenterons dans le détail une nouvelle technique d’enquêtes en ligne (inspirée du « crowdsourcing » ou « ...production participative ») permettant de porter un regard neuf sur la différenciation diatopique du français au Canada, envisagée du point de vue des autoreprésentations. Nous enchaÎnerons avec une réflexion épistémologique portant sur les limites inhérentes à ce type d’approche (données élicitées vs. spontanées; données de production et d’autoreprésentation; paradoxe de l’observateur; variation diasituationnelle; problèmes de syntagmatique; distinction entre signification et désignation), puis présenterons brièvement le traitement cartographique effectué, pour aboutir au coeur de l’exposé : une série de cartes et de graphes élaborés à partir de nos enquêtes et illustrant différentes distributions aréales prototypiques (aires complémentaires, types locaux, aires périphériques et effet d’âge).
Epistemological considerations on a new methodological and empirical contribution to the geolinguistic study of North-American French
. After a brief historical overview of Canadian French geolinguistic studies, we will offer a detailed presentation of a new on-line survey technique (crowdsourcing) that allows us to shed new light on dialectal differentiation in Canadian French, considered from the point of view of the speakers’ self-representations. We will be following this up with an epistemological questioning focused on the limits of this approach (elicited vs. spontaneous data; production vs. auto-representation data; observer’s paradox; diasituational variation; syntagmatic issues; distinction between signification and designation), and then go on with a presentation of the cartographic treatment of the data. The core of the talk will be dedicated to a series of maps and graphs, elaborated on the basis of our on-line inquiries, that exemplify various prototypical areal distributions (complementary areas, local types, peripheral areas and age effect).

Cet article propose un relevé systématique, comparatif et analytique des correspondances entre les régionalismes présents en Nouvelle-Calédonie, d’une part, et ceux qui caractérisent les français ...d’Amérique (laurentien, acadien et louisianais) ainsi que le continuum créole/français antillais, d’autre part. Il identifie un certain nombre d’archaïsmes, mais aussi d’innovations communes, et se penche en particulier sur les diastratismes ayant connu des processus de réallocation dans les variétés d’outre-mer. En conclusion, le français de Nouvelle-Calédonie apparaît comme la « dernière frontière » d’un ex-empire colonial peuplé d’expatriés qui se sont construit une norme à eux, bien loin du carcan normatif de la métropole.
This paper proposes a systematic, comparative and analytical survey of the correspondences between regionalisms in New Caledonia, on the one hand, and in North-America (Laurentian, Acadian and Cajun ...French) and the Antilles (French and Creole), on the other. It identifies a number of archaisms but also a set of common innovations, and specifically deals with vulgarisms that have undergone reallocation processes in overseas varieties. In conclusion, New Caledonia French appears to be the "last frontier" of a former colonial empire populated by expatriates who have built a norm of their own, far from the normative weight of the metropolis. Cet article propose un relevé systématique, comparatif et analytique des correspondances entre les régionalismes présents en Nouvelle-Calédonie, d'une part, et ceux qui caractérisent les français d'Amérique (laurentien, acadien et louisianais) ainsi que le continuum créole/français antillais, d'autre part.
