Abstract
Eridanus II (Eri II) is an ultrafaint dwarf (UFD) galaxy (
M
V
= −7.1) located at a distance close to the Milky Way virial radius. Early shallow color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) indicated ...that it possibly hosted an intermediate-age or even young stellar population, which is unusual for a galaxy of this mass. In this paper, we present new Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys CMDs reaching the oldest main-sequence turnoff with excellent photometric precision and derive a precise star formation history (SFH) for this galaxy through CMD fitting. This SFH shows that the bulk of the stellar mass in Eri II formed in an extremely short star formation burst at the earliest possible time. The derived star formation rate profile has a width at half maximum of 500 Myr and reaches a value compatible with null star formation 13 Gyr ago. However, tests with mock stellar populations and with the CMD of the globular cluster M92 indicate that the star formation period could be shorter than 100 Myr. ) we infer the number of supernova (SN) events and the corresponding energy injected into the interstellar medium. For reasonable estimates of the Eri II virial mass and values of the coupling efficiency of the SN energy, we conclude that Eri II could be quenched by SN feedback alone, thus casting doubts on the need to invoke cosmic reionization as the preferred explanation for the early quenching of old UFD galaxies.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea and caused by upper airway obstructions. Clinically, patients with OSA characteristically experience intermittent nocturnal ...hypoxemia and impaired sleep quality. Cognitive impairments are commonly seen in patients with an OSA diagnosis. A literature search on OSA, cognitive impairments and CPAP was performed with various electronic databases including Medline, EMBASE and Google Scholar. The chosen evidence was limited to human subject studies only, and reports on either central sleep apnea or non-classified sleep apnea were excluded. Available evidence has been systemically reviewed to ascertain what types of cognitive impairments are related to OSA as well as the pathological connections. In addition, effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) was analyzed as a standard therapy for improving cognitive performance in patients with OSA. The review contributed in: (1) delineating OSA as a risk factor of cognitive impairments; (2) enumerating cognitive impairments seen in patients with OSA; (3) substantiating the relation between OSA and cognitive impairments from the pathological perspective of AD biomarkers; and (4) revealing duration of CPAP is crucial for its therapeutic effects on improving cognitive performance in patients with OSA.
ABSTRACT
We present the star formation history (SFH) of the extremely metal-poor dwarf galaxy DDO 68, based on our photometry with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. With a metallicity of only
and a ...very isolated location, DDO 68 is one of the most metal-poor galaxies known. It has been argued that DDO 68 is a young system that started forming stars only ∼0.15 Gyr ago. Our data provide a deep and uncontaminated optical color–magnitude diagram (CMD) that allows us to disprove this hypothesis since we find a population of at least ∼1 Gyr old stars. The star formation activity has been fairly continuous over all the look-back time. The current rate is quite low, and the highest activity occurred between 10 and 100 Myr ago. The average star formation rate over the whole Hubble time is ≃0.01

. Our photometry allows us to infer the distance from the tip of the red giant branch,

= 30.51, still inside the errors of the previous determination, and we adopt the latter. DDO 68 shows a very interesting and complex history, with its quite disturbed shape and a long tail, probably due to tidal interactions. The SFH of the tail differs from that of the main body mainly for enhanced activity at recent epochs likely triggered by the interaction.
Context.
In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large ...samples of Galactic stars, complementing
Gaia
astrometry. Among those surveys, the
Gaia
-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey, the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100 000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters.
Aims.
This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow.
Methods.
We made use of the information recorded and archived in the observing blocks; during the observing runs; in a number of relevant documents; in the spectra and master catalogue of spectra; in the parameters delivered by the analysis nodes and the working groups; in the final catalogue; and in the science papers. Based on these sources, we critically analyse and discuss the output and products of the Survey, including science highlights. We also determined the average metallicities of the open clusters observed as science targets and of a sample of clusters whose spectra were retrieved from the ESO archive.
Results.
The Gaia-ESO Survey has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110 000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the
Gaia
-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved.
Conclusions.
The final catalogue will be released through the ESO archive in the first half of 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. In addition to these results, the
Gaia
-ESO Survey will leave a very important legacy, for several aspects and for many years to come.
We present a study correlating the spatial locations of young star clusters with those of molecular clouds in NGC 5194, in order to investigate the time-scale over which clusters separate from their ...birth clouds. The star cluster catalogues are from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) and the molecular clouds from the Plateau de Bure Interefrometer Arcsecond Whirpool Survey (PAWS). We find that younger star clusters are spatially closer to molecular clouds than older star clusters. The median age for clusters associated with clouds is 4 Myr, whereas it is 50 Myr for clusters that are sufficiently separated from a molecular cloud to be considered unassociated. After ∼6 Myr, the majority of the star clusters lose association with their molecular gas. Younger star clusters are also preferentially located in stellar spiral arms where they are hierarchically distributed in kpc-size regions for 50-100 Myr before dispersing. The youngest star clusters are more strongly clustered, yielding a two-point correlation function with α = -0.28 ± 0.04, than the giant molecular cloud (GMCs) (α = -0.09 ± 0.03) within the same PAWS field. However, the clustering strength of the most massive GMCs, supposedly the progenitors of the young clusters for a star formation efficiency of a few per cent, is comparable (α = -0.35 ± 0.05) to that of the clusters. We find a galactocentric dependence for the coherence of star formation, in which clusters located in the inner region of the galaxy reside in smaller star-forming complexes and display more homogeneous distributions than clusters further from the centre. This result suggests a correlation between the survival of a cluster complex and its environment.
We evaluate the frequencies of collective modes and the anisotropic expansion rate of a harmonically trapped Fermi superfluid at varying coupling strengths across a Feshbach resonance driving a ...BCS-BEC crossover. The equations of motion for the superfluid are obtained from a microscopic mean-field expression for the compressibility and are solved within a scaling ansatz. Our results confirm nonmonotonic behavior in the crossover region and are in quantitative agreement with current measurements of the transverse breathing mode by Kinast et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150402 (2004) and of the axial breathing mode by Bartenstein et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 203201 (2004).
The pathogenesis of hypertension (HTN) in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) is complex and remains not fully understood. Chronic immune activation (IA) is postulated to be one of the culprits. This ...notion is derived from studies in HIV-uninfected populations and/or animals while data on HTN and how it relates to IA in PLHIV remains scarce. We determined the relationship between HTN and IA among antiretroviral therapy (ART) naïve PLHIV. We analysed baseline data of 365 out of 430 clinical trial participants whose main aim was to investigate the effect of low-dose aspirin on HIV disease progression in PLHIV starting ART. Soluble CD14 (sCD14), T cells co-expressing CD38 and HLA-DR, and PD-1 were the IA and exhaustion markers, respectively studied and were analysed by flow cytometry. Mann-Whitney U-test was used for comparison of the markers by HTN status. A robust Poisson regression model was used to determine the predictors for HTN. A quarter of the 365 were hypertensive (25.3%, 95% CI 20.9-29.8%), and, had higher median (IQR) body mass index (kg/m.sup.2) (23.4 (19.6, 28.0) versus 21.9 (19.3, 25.1)) and lower median (IQR) estimated glomerular filtration rate (mL/min/1.73m.sup.2) (101.2 (79.4, 126.9) versus 113.6 (92.7, 138.8)) than normotensive participants (p < 0.05). Participants with HTN had higher median frequencies of all markers of IA and exhaustion but lower sCD14 (p > 0.05). None of these markers significantly predicted the occurrence of HTN. Studied markers of IA and exhaustion were higher in PLHIV with HTN than those without but were unpredictive of HTN. Larger multicentre studies with a wider range of markers are needed to confirm the role of IA in HIV-associated HTN.
ABSTRACT
We present dynamical models of the star-forming galaxy NGC 5474 based on N-body hydrodynamical numerical simulations. We investigate the possible origin of the compact round stellar ...structure, generally interpreted as the bulge of the galaxy, but unusually off-set by ${\simeq} 1\, {\rm kpc}$ in projection from the visual and the kinematic centres of both the star and the gas discs. We argue that it is very unlikely that the putative bulge is in a coplanar orbit in the disc plane, showing that such a configuration would be hardly compatible with its smooth and regular spatial distribution, and, in case its mass is above $10^8\, \mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$, also with the regular ${\rm H\,{\small I}}$ velocity field of NGC 5474. Instead, if the putative bulge is in fact an early-type satellite galaxy orbiting around NGC 5474, not only the off-set can be easily produced by projection effects, but our simulations suggest that the gravitational interaction between the two systems can explain also the warped ${\rm H\,{\small I}}$ distribution of NGC 5474 and the formation of its loose spiral arms. As a by-product of the simulations, we find that the peculiar overdensity of old stars detected in the south-west region of NGC 5474 may be explained with the interaction between NGC 5474 and a smaller stellar system, unrelated to the putative bulge, accreted in the disc plane.
