ODP Leg 189 was designed to test the hypothesis that opening of the Tasmanian Seaway and initiation of circumpolar circulation contributed to the thermal isolation of Antarctica, leading to the ...development of initial ice-sheet and oceanic thermohaline circulation. The clay assemblages of the Tasmanian region contain the traces of two tectonic stages associated with ocean opening south of the south Tasman Rise near the Palaeocene–Eocene boundary and strike-slip activity between the western Tasmanian land-bridge and Antarctica during the Late Eocene. Earliest Oligocene clays indicate that cooling of Antarctic margins and activity of western boundary circulation progressed with the regional subsidence.
Le but du leg ODP 189 était de tester l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'ouverture océanique au sud de la Tasmanie, isolant le continent antarctique au-delà des courants circumpolaires, serait à l'origine du développement des glaces et des eaux antarctiques, moteurs importants de la circulation thermohaline actuelle. Les argiles terrigènes du secteur Tasman contiennent les traces de l'ouverture océanique au sud de la ride Sud-Tasmane vers la limite Paléocène–Éocène, ainsi que du coulissage de la bordure occidentale du pont continental tasman le long de la marge antarctique à l'Éocène supérieur. À partir de l'Oligocène inférieur, les argiles reflètent le refroidissement des marges antarctiques et le développement des circulations méridiennes de surface, en liaison avec l'accélération de la subsidence régionale.
We report herein the case of a patient with Waldenström macroglobulinemia in whom an immunoblastic sarcoma produced acute jaundice and hepatic failure. Transvenous liver biopsy, performed because of ...coagulation deficiencies, revealed massive infiltration of the liver by the sarcoma. Immunofluorescence study showed numerous portal and sinusoidal cells stained exclusively by anti-micron anti-kappa antisera. As shown by others in the literature, this study supports evidence for the same clonal origin of the two proliferations. Chromosomal abnormalities were found in marrow and blood cells (trisomy 5 and 20, 6 q-, 7 q+, and 8 p-); their role in emergence of sarcoma is discussed. This case shows that immunoblastic sarcoma emerging during the course of Waldenström macroglobulinemia may be revealed by severe hepatic manifestations.
