We systematically study different scenarios of collision between Dirac solitons and Jackiw-Rebbi (JR) states, which have been found recently in a system consisting of two interfaced binary waveguide ...arrays with opposite propagation mismatches. This collision has the resonance features for the reflected and transmitted signals. The trapping effect of Dirac solitons between two JR-states is analyzed.
This paper designs a 1 × 2 switchable dual-mode optical 90° hybrid device on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform for the mode division multiplexing hybridized coherent transmission systems in ...optical communication. Our proposed hybrid uses various 2 × 2 multimode interference (MMI) couplers, symmetric Y-junctions, and thermo-optic phase shifters. The suggested hybrid device working principle is proved on theoretical analysis about the multimode interference and the transfer matrix relation. The optimization of geometrical parameters and metallic micro-heaters is executed through the numerical simulation method. The proposed hybrid coupler expresses lots of optical performance advantages, with an insertion loss lower than 2.5 dB, a common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) better than −24 dB, and phase error smaller than 4° in the 50-nm wavelength bandwidth of the third telecom window for both two TE modes. Besides, the device is proven large geometrical tolerances in terms of width and height tolerances larger than ±50 nm and ±6 nm in the 1.5-dB variation limit of transmission, respectively. In addition, the proposed device attains relatively low power consumption under 75 mW and an ultrafast switching time below 10 μs. Such advantages of good performances make the device a promising potential for broadband and intra-chip MDM-hybridized coherent optical communication systems and photonic integrated circuits.
We study optical analogues of higher-order Dirac solitons (HODSs) in binary waveguide arrays. Like higher-order solitons obtained from the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger equation governing the ...pulse propagation in an optical fiber, these HODSs have amplitude profiles which are numerically shown to be periodic over large propagation distances. At the same time, HODSs possess some unique features. Firstly, the period of a HODS depends on its order parameter. Secondly, the discrete nature in binary waveguide arrays imposes the upper limit on the order parameter of HODSs. Thirdly, the order parameter of HODSs can vary continuously in a certain range.
•Higher-order Dirac solitons in nonlinear binary waveguide arrays are numerically demonstrated.•Amplitude profiles of higher-order Dirac solitons are periodic during propagation.•The period of higher-order Dirac solitons decreases when the soliton order increases.

In a world where leaders and organizations face conflicts and complexity at an alarming rate, where human cruelty sometimes dominates kindness in individuals and families, and where nations hover in ...the shadow of moral and financial collapse, how do we find courage to forge a strong and enduring path into the future? In a fresh and profound approach to the personal, organizational, and global dynamic, discerning leaders consider the role of leadership and forgiveness in the midst of political and social upheaval. The epicenter of Servant-Leadership and Forgiveness speaks to leadership, the heart of the leader, and the power of forgiveness. It is a compilation of insightful, life- transformative, and significant essays on the nexus of servant-leadership and forgiveness in everyday life, the organizational world, and international contexts. The hope of the book is that people of all ages and creeds will engage in a deeper conversation around forgiveness and leadership, specifically servant-leadership, and reach greater personal and collective responsibility for leadership that helps heal the heart of the world through forgiveness.
Abstract Childhood diabetes care may be suboptimal in resource-poor countries. A cross-sectional study of youths with diabetes aged ≤19 years attending the three major paediatric centres in Vietnam ...was performed. Diabetes management was documented by questionnaire. Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) was measured with a fingerprick blood sample. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to examine factors associated with glycaemic control. In total, 105 patients participated, comprising 93 with type 1 diabetes and 12 with neonatal diabetes. The median age was 11.5 years interquartile range (IQR) 6.4–14.5 years and the median duration of diabetes was 2.6 years (IQR 1.5–6.1 years). Patients with type 1 diabetes performed few blood glucose tests per month (median 8, IQR 4–30). Mean HbA1c was higher in patients with type 1 diabetes compared with neonatal diabetes (9.9% vs. 7.5%; P = 0.01). In type 1 diabetes using multivariate analysis, higher HbA1c was associated with older age (β = 0.3, 95% CI 0.2–0.4; P < 0.001), lower frequency of blood glucose monitoring (β = –0.06, 95% CI –0.10 to 0.12; P = 0.01) and use of pre-mixed insulin (β = −1.7, 95% CI −3.4 to 0.0; P = 0.05). In conclusion, international glycaemic control targets for childhood diabetes (HbA1c <7.5%) are not being achieved in Vietnam, and intensive diabetes management is rare. There is an urgent need to address barriers to achieving optimal control in this population.
