En el año 1709, en Londres, fue publicado el título The Diverting Works of the famous Miguel de Cervantes; el año siguiente, el mismo volumen fue reeditado empero presumiendo diferente título: A ...Week’s Entertainment at a Wedding. Containing Six Surprizing and Diverting Adventures… Written in Spanish by the Author of Don Quixot. Como se anuncia, son seis los relatos breves contenidos en sus páginas, mas, a pesar de lo indicado en sendos títulos, ni uno solo de los relatos incluidos en este compendio es fruto de la pluma cervantina. Por el contrario, son traducciones al inglés de textos compuestos por tres escritores, todos exponentes del Siglo de Oro español. Pese a que contamos hoy con información documental que nos permite rastrear obras de María de Zayas y Pérez de Montalbán como fuentes, se suele dar crédito exclusivamente a Pérez de Montalbán y creemos que es momento de regresarle el nombre a nuestra autora. Con esto en mente, nos adentramos en el complejo fenómeno editorial de esta traducción inglesa dieciochesca.
The main aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the active compounds from the hexane extract of the fruit peels of Citrus aurantiifolia, which showed activity against one sensitive and ...three monoresistant (isoniazid, streptomycin or ethambutol) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. The active extract was fractionated by column chromatography, yielding the following major compounds: 5-geranyloxypsoralen (1); 5-geranyloxy-7-methoxycoumarin (2); 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin (3); 5-methoxypsoralen (4); and 5,8-dimethoxypsoralen (5). The structures of these compounds were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. In addition, GC-MS analysis of the hexane extract allowed the identification of 44 volatile compounds, being 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin (15.79%), 3-methyl-1,2-cyclopentanedione (8.27%), 1-methoxy-ciclohexene (8.0%), corylone (6.93%), palmitic acid (6.89%), 5,8-dimethoxypsoralen (6.08%), a-terpineol (5.97%), and umbelliferone (4.36%), the major constituents. Four isolated coumarins and 16 commercial compounds identified by GC-MS were tested against M. tuberculosis H37Rv and three multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis strains using the Microplate Alamar Blue Assay. The constituents that showed activity against all strains were 5 (MICs = 25-50 mg/mL), 1 (MICs = 50-100 mg/mL), palmitic acid (MICs = 25-50 mg/mL), linoleic acid (MICs = 50-100 mg/mL), oleic acid (MICs = 100 mg/mL), 4-hexen-3-one (MICs = 50-100 mg/mL), and citral (MICs = 50-100 mg/mL). Compound 5 and palmitic acid were the most active ones. The antimycobacterial activity of the hexane extract of C. aurantifolia could be attributed to these compounds.
The therapeutic effect of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) following myocardial infarction (MI) is small. This may be due to differences in cellular sources and donor age, route of administration, in ...vitro cellular manipulations and the short time course of follow up in many animal studies. Here, we compared MSCs from two different sources (adult bone marrow or Wharton's jelly from umbilical cord) for their long-term therapeutic effect following MI in a rat model to evaluate the effect of donor age. MSCs (or control infusions) were given intravenously 24-48 hr after myocardial ischemia (MI) induced by coronary artery ligation. Cardiac function was assessed by ultrasound at time points starting from before MSC infusion through 68 weeks after MI. A significant improvement in ejection fraction was seen in animals that received MSCs in time points 25 to 31 wks after treatment (p < 0.01). These results support previous work that show that MSCs can cause improvement in cardiac function and extend that work by showing that the beneficial effects are durable. To investigate MSCs' cardiac differentiation potential, Wharton's jelly MSCs were co-cultured with fetal or adult bone-derived marrow MSCs. When Wharton's jelly MSCs were co-cultured with fetal MSCs, and not with adult MSCs, myotube structures were observed in two-three days and spontaneous contractions (beating) cells were observed in fiveseven days. The beating structures formed a functional syncytium indicated by coordinated contractions (beating) of independent nodes. Taken together, these results suggest that MSCs given 24-48 hr after MI have a significant and durable beneficial effect more than 25 weeks after MI and that MSC treatment can home to damaged tissue and improve heart function after intravenous infusion 24-48 hrs after MI, and that WJCs may be a useful source for off-the-shelf cellular therapy for MI.
In various disciplines, an association between surgical wait times and patient outcomes has been identified. This study is among the first to investigate whether practice setting influences wait ...times for elective surgeries in benign gynecology.
This retrospective study of patients at three New York hospitals from 10/2019-2/2020 compared surgical wait times among patients seen in federally-qualified health centers (FQHC's) and private practice settings. Emergent surgeries, oncology cases, abortions, urogynecology procedures, and cases concurrently booked with another specialty were excluded. Surgical wait time was defined as the time (days) from the decision to operate to the day of the procedure. A multivariable mixed model was used to model surgical wait time by setting of care, adjusting for age, BMI, race, ethnicity, insurance, need for medical clearance, and scheduled block time. A univariable analysis was then utilized to assess surgical wait times by clinical setting for each insurance type.
Five hundred forty patients were identified with a median age of 45.6 years (range 16-87). Average surgical wait time was 27 days (range 1-288 days). In multivariable analysis, longer surgical wait times were associated with being seen preoperatively in a FQHC compared to the private practice setting (102% longer, 59.5 days vs. 22 days, p < 0.0001), and with needing medical clearance (56.4% longer, 45 days vs. 22 days. p = 0.0001).
These results suggest that in benign gynecology, surgical wait times are significantly influenced by the practice setting in which a patient gets care, with notable delays in care among patients who are seen in a federally qualified health center preoperatively.
