Infestation of willow plants by the giant willow aphid Tuberolachnus salignus (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is associated with copious deposition of sugar-rich honeydew under the plant canopy. We explored ...the effect of aphid honeydew on the soil biota and biochemical indicators in a two-year field trial. Soil samples from under aphid-infested and control willow trees, as well as samples from black sooty mould spots under the aphid-infested willows were compared; soil samples before aphid inoculation were used as a baseline. The honeydew deposition had a positive effect on the total soil carbon (C), but not on the total soil nitrogen content or soil pH. Microbial biomass C, basal respiration, number of yeast colony forming units, and the geometric mean of activities for six enzymes were significantly higher in honeydew-affected soils than in the control treatment on both years. The honeydew deposition also increased soil meso-fauna abundance, especially in the black sooty mould spots. The soil biochemical properties, which differed before and after aphid infestation, showed considerable overlap between the first and second year post-infestation. The results highlight the cascading effects of T. salignus on soil biological activity and the importance of using a multitrophic approach to explore similar scenarios.
Background and Aims: Cases of Clostridioides difficile infection have been rising among the pediatric and adolescent population. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has emerged as an alternative ...therapy for recurrent C. difficile infection. We aim to perform the first systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the safety and efficacy of fecal microbiota transplantation for C. difficile infection in children and adolescents. Methods: A literature search was performed using variations of the keywords “pediatrics”, “C. difficile infection”, and “fecal microbiota transplantation” in PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Google Scholar from inception to 30 June 2022. The resulting 575 articles were independently screened by three authors. Fourteen studies that satisfied the eligibility criteria were included in the meta-analysis. Results: The pooled success rate of FMT in the overall cohort was 86% (95% confidence interval: 77−95%; p < 0.001; I2 = 70%). There were 38 serious adverse events in 36 patients with a pooled rate of 2.0% (95% confidence interval: 0.0−3.0%; p = 0.1; I2 = 0.0%) and 47 adverse events in 45 patients with a pooled rate of 15% (95% confidence interval: 5.0−25.0%; p = 0.02; I2 = 54.0%). There was no death associated with FMT. Conclusions: FMT was concluded to be an effective and safe therapy in pediatric and adolescent patients with C. difficile infection. Underlying comorbidities may impede the efficacy. A rigorous screening process of the donors is recommended prior to embarking on FMT. There is no universal and cost-effective way to monitor the long-term outcomes of FMT. While promising, metagenomic sequencing may not be available in settings with limited resources. Robust data from randomized clinical trials is warranted.
Methotrexate (MTX), which is the anchor drug in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), targets actively proliferating cells including the oocytes and granulosa cells which may impair the ovarian reserve. The ...purpose of this study was to determine the effects of MTX therapy on gonadotropic hormones, i.e. follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in female RA patients of reproductive age.
This is a cross-sectional study conducted at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC), from January 2018 to July 2018. Women with RA aged between 15 and 49 years who were on MTX therapy for at least six months, were consecutively recruited. All subjects were interviewed to gather information on their menstrual history and menopausal symptoms. The medical records were reviewed to obtain further data on the disease characteristics and RA treatment. The RA disease activity was determined using the DAS 28 scoring system. All subjects were tested for their serum FSH and LH levels.
A total of 40 patients were included in this study. The median dose of MTX used by the subjects was 12.5 mg weekly. The mean cumulative MTX dose was 1664.92 ± 738.61 mg. More than half (53.1%) of the subjects reported menopausal symptoms especially hot flushes. We found that FSH levels had a significant positive correlation with cumulative MTX dose (r = 0.86), p < 0.001 and the duration of MTX therapy (r = 0.84), p < 0.001. Besides, there was a significant relationship between disease activity based on DAS 28 and FSH levels (p < 0.01). Age, body mass index, disease duration, and weekly MTX dose showed no associations with the FSH levels. On multivariate analysis, DAS 28 was found to be the only parameter that remained significant β = 1.74 (95% CI 1.17-2.31), p < 0.001. The LH levels, on the other hand, were not associated with MTX therapy or disease activity.
Higher levels of FSH, which is an indicator of diminished ovarian reserve, have a significant positive relationship with disease activity, cumulative dose, and duration of MTX therapy in RA.
