This research was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the based 5E learning cycle model (LCM) and Gardner's multiple intelligence theory instructions (MIT) on students’ achievement, retention ...level on the unit of chemical properties concepts, their attitude towards chemistry, and constructs of motivation to learn chemistry when compared with traditional instruction method (TIM). A total number of 151 ninth graders (69 male and 82 female) participated in the study. The research design was non-equivalent control group design as a type of quasi-experimental design. The chemical properties achievement test, attitude scale toward chemistry, and chemistry motivation questionnaire were applied to all groups before and after the application process. The descriptive and inferential statistics analysis was conducted to analyze the data of this investigation. The findings of the study depicted that the 5E LCM and MIT were positively effective than TIM regarding students’ achievement and retention level on unit of chemical properties concepts and their attitude toward chemistry and some constructs of motivation to learn chemistry. However, there were no differences between groups about mean of students’ self-efficacy and anxiety. Results and implications of the study were discussed.
Bu çalışmanın amacı 5E öğrenme döngüsü modeli ve çoklu zekâ kuramını temelli öğretimlerin öğrencilerin kimyasal özellikler ünitesinin kavramları üzerindeki başarılarına, hatırlama düzeylerine, kimya dersine karşı tutumlarına ve kimya öğrenmeye yönelik motivasyon bileşenlerine etkisini geleneksel öğretim metodu ile karşılaştırmalı olarak araştırmaktır. Araştırma 151 (69 erkek, 82 kız) dokuzuncu sınıf öğrencisi ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada eşit olmayan kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada veri toplama araçları olarak, uygulama öncesi ve sonrasında öğrencilere kimyasal özellikler başarı testi, kimyaya yönelik tutum ölçeği ve kimya motivasyon ölçeği uygulanmıştır. Tanımlayıcı ve çıkarımsal istatistiksel analiz ile araştırmanın verileri çözümlenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonuçları, 5E öğrenme döngüsü ve çoklu zekâ teoremi temelli öğretimin öğrencilerin kimyasal özellikler ünitesi kavramları üzerine başarına, hatırlama düzeylerine, kendilerinin kimyaya olan tutum ve kimyayı öğrenmeye yönelik bazı motivasyon bileşenlerini bakımından geleneksel öğretim metoduna kıyasla daha etkili olduğunu göstermiştir. Öğrencilerin kaygı ve öz-yeterlilik ortalamaları bakımından ise gruplar arasında herhangi bir farklılık yoktur. Çalışmanın bulguları ve önerileri tartışılmıştır.
The purpose of this research was twofold. The first was to investigate the development of preservice teachers' knowledge base for science teaching on the rate of reaction topic within the 14-week ...content representation (CoRe)-based mentoring-enriched practicum course. In this course, CoRe design was used as a form of lesson planning and intensive educative mentoring was provided by teaching assistants. The second purpose was to identify which aspects of the practicum course contributed to preservice teachers' development. Three preservice chemistry teachers voluntarily participated in the study. Qualitative data sources included CoRe, semistructured interviews, and reflection papers. Both inductive and deductive analyses were applied by triangulating findings from multiple data sources. Results revealed that at the end of the practicum, participants were able to successfully link content with teaching to promote student learning. Their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) developed with its all components coherently integrated with each other. They also started to view the PCK construct as professional pedagogical knowledge. Educative mentoring with the use of an explicit and shared PCK language supported by CoRes, teaching experiences, and the observation of peers were reported as the most valuable aspects in stimulating teacher development. Implications for teachers' professional growth and research are discussed.
This study investigated pre-service chemistry teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of the nature of science (NOS) in the content of the particle nature of matter. Qualitative research design was ...utilized. Data were collected from seven pre-service chemistry teachers (PCTs) by using open-ended questions, interviews, observations, lesson plans, and reflection papers. The results indicated that while most of the PCTs showed improvement in terms of understanding of the target aspects of NOS, knowledge of learners and instructional strategies, the majority of PCTs did not make progress regarding knowledge of assessment during the study. Implications for science teacher education are also presented.
Akademik olarak özel yetenekli öğrenciler akranlarına göre bilişsel olarak daha hızlı gelişim gösterirler ve kendileri gibi hızlı öğrenen akranlarıyla özel eğitime gereksinim duyarlar. Bu ...araştırmanın amacı argümantasyon öğrenme yaklaşımı temelli astronomi-kimya düşünce deneylerinin özel yetenekli öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünme becerileri üzerine etkisini belirlemektir. Araştırma 2017-2018 öğretim yılında Ankara’da özel yetenekli öğrencilerle öğretim yapan bir okulda 18 özel yetenekli öğrenciyle 16 ders saati süreyle nitel araştırma desenlerinden durum çalışması temelinde yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak yedi adet astronomi-kimya düşünce deneyini argüman olarak yeniden kurgulatan öğretim dizini çalışma yaprakları ve öğrencilerin yapılandırdıkları düşünce deneyleri kullanılmıştır. Veri toplama sürecinde özel yetenekli öğrenciler yedi adet astronomi-kimya düşünce deneyini küçük gruplarda tartıştıktan sonra her birini bireysel olarak argüman biçiminde yapılandırmışlardır. Daha sonra ise özel yetenekli öğrenciler düşünce deneylerinin kazanımlarıyla paralel olacak biçimde kendi düşünce deneylerini yapılandırmışlardır. Veriler içerik analiziyle ve betimlemelerle çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda özel yetenekli öğrencilerin düşünce deneylerini argüman olarak yapılandırabildikleri ve kendi düşünce deneylerini üretebildikleri, bu sayede eleştirel düşünme becerilerinin geliştirilebildiği bulunmuştur.
The academically gifted students could learn knowledge much more rapidly than their peers, so they need special education with their peers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of astronomy-chemistry thought experiments based on argumentation on gifted students’ critical thinking skills. The research was conducted with 18 gifted students at a school for gifted students in Ankara in the 2017-2018 academic year on the basis of a case study as one of the qualitative research designs through 16 lesson hours. As data collection tools, worksheets making students reconstruct each of the seven astronomy-chemistry thought experiments as arguments, and student-constructed thought experiments were used. During the application process, first, the gifted students reconstructed the seven astronomy-chemistry thought experiments as arguments individually after small group discussions, and then they constructed their own thought experiments on the basis of the previous thought experiments targets. As a result of the study, it was found that the gifted students could reconstruct the thought experiments as arguments, and they could construct their own thought experiments. Hence, it could be said that their critical thinking skills were improved too.
