ALICE at the CERN LHC will investigate the physics of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities where the formation of the Quark Gluon Plasma is expected. Its properties can be studied ...from observations like the production of mesons with charm and beauty quarks. These signals have to be studied as a function of energy density, which is determined by the centrality of collisions. One of the physics observables that is closely related with the centrality of the collision is the number of spectator nucleons that can be measured by the Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC). Having a direct geometric interpretation allows to extract the impact parameter with minimal model assumptions. This paper describes the readout system of the ZDC. The ZDC readout consists of a VME system with a ZDC Readout Card, a VME Processor, Discriminators, a ZDC Trigger Card, scalers, QDCs and TDCs. The system was successfully tested during the 2009 ALICE data taking and is currently operational at the LHC.
The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has studied $\phi$ meson production in In-In collisions at 158A GeV via both the $K^+K^-$ and the $\mu^+\mu^-$ decay channels. The yields and inverse slope ...parameters of the $m_T$ spectra observed in the two channels are compatible within errors, different from the large discrepancies seen in Pb-Pb collisions between the hadronic (NA49) and dimuon (NA50) decay channels. Possible physics implications are discussed.

Tomography of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Heavy Quarks
, which was held in October 2016 in Leiden, The Netherlands. In this contribution, we summarize identified common understandings and developed strategies for the upcoming five years, which aim at achieving a profound knowledge of the dynamical properties of the quark-gluon plasma.
Carnitine is an endogenous cofactor involved in the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria where they undergo beta-oxidation. Through another reaction, carnitine produces free ...coenzyme A and reduces the ratio of acetyl-coenzyme A to coenzyme A, thereby enhancing oxidative use of glucose, augmenting adenosine triphosphate synthesis, and reducing lactate production and acidosis. Because of its regulatory action on the energy flow from the different oxidative sources, especially under ischemic conditions, carnitine has been used in cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and chronic renal diseases with satisfactory results. A flap is also a relatively ischemic tissue and may obtain benefit from carnitine. To investigate this, 30 rats were divided into three groups of 10 animals: a control group and two carnitine-treated groups. Random dorsal skin flaps were elevated on the rats. In the control group, no pharmacologic agents were used. Of the two treated groups, group 1 was treated with 50 mg/kg/day carnitine for 1 week and group 2 was treated with 100 mg/kg/day carnitine for 1 week. The areas of flap necrosis were measured in each group. The median areas of flap necrosis of the groups were 12.55, 9.23, and 4.9 cm2, respectively. There was a statistically significant improvement of flap necrosis in carnitine-treated groups compared with the control group (group 2, p = 0.001; group 3, p = 0.000). Furthermore, there was less necrosis in the high-dose carnitine-treated group than the low-dose carnitine-treated group. As a conclusion, carnitine may have a dose-dependent effect to increase flap survival in random skin flaps.
Here we review the context, the motivations and the expected performances of a comprehensive and ambitious fixed-target programme using the multi-TeV proton and ion LHC beams. We also provide a ...detailed account of the different possible technical implementations ranging from an internal wire target to a full dedicated beam line extracted with a bent crystal. The possibilities offered by the use of the ALICE and LHCb detectors in the fixed-target mode are also reviewed.
The reasons for the decreased functional activity of prothrombin in liver diseases are still speculative. When a highly purified preparation of prothrombin from a patient with liver cirrhosis is ...available, the cause of prothrombin abnormalities may be researched on a molecular basis. In this study, prothrombin (6.7 mg) was purified from the ascites fluid (1130 mL) of a patient with liver cirrhosis by barium citrate adsorption, ammonium sulfate elution, DEAE Sephacel and Heparin Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography steps. The molecular weight of this prothrombin was the same as that of normal prothrombin purified from a normal plasma pool. The specific activities were found to be 3.36 U/mg in the one stage clotting assay and 28.9 U/mg in the staphylocoagulase/chromogenic substrate assay, while the normal prothrombin specific activities were 3.92 U/mg and 30.1 U/mg respectively. When N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis was carried out, it was seen that the first 20 residues were identical to the normal human prothrombin excepting the Gla at position #14.
