Among many literary terms found in the Lexicon Latinum (1742) by Andrija Jambrešić and Franjo Sušnik (auctor and scriptor — book writer; impressio — printing; libellus — booklet; typographeum — print ...house; typographia — to know how to set and print letters etc.) we can also find the term libellarium — bookcase, bookshelf, for keeping different letters and papers. This descriptive definition of libellarium sums up all the three areas this journal is dedicated to — the history of the writting, the history of books, and the history of memory institutions, which is the reason why this term was selected as the name of the journal. The main aims of Libellarium are motivating and promoting the research of the history of the written word, books and heritage institutions. The Croatian written and printed heritage offers infinite possibilities of research using the most current research methodology, which has not been applied in earlier research. The editorial board of Libellarium therefore invites research papers that will throw more light on the Croatian written and printed heritage, as well as papers that will promote research in line with the prevailing and the most current research paradigms. Such a blend of source and methodology is supposed to improve research methods, increase the interest in investigating the history of the written word, books and heritage institutions, and eventually result in their establishment as modern scientific disciplines in Croatian scholarship. This especially refers to the history of books, which has, in the past 50 years (starting with the pioneering book by Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin L’Apparition du livre published in 1958) evolved as a discrete scientific discipline with a developed research methodology that leans on the achievements of the history of literature, history in the narrow sense, cultural anthropology, sociology, librarianship, and many other sciences. There is only a handful of research papers from Croatia published in the past few years which follow, but also critically examine, the authors such as Robert Darnton, Roger Chartier, Paul Saenger, and other prominent scholars, as the modern research methodology has still not been sufficiently applied in humanities and social sciences research in Croatia. The editorial board of Libellarium wishes, on the one hand, to motivate modern research such as the interaction between the book and the reader, preparation of the manuscript or the printed text for the reader, appropriation methods, etc., and on the other, motivate the examination of the whole corpus of original sources for the history of (especially Croatian) books, as well as the interplay of social, cultural, intelectual, economic, legal and political circumstances that provided the conditions for the production, distribution and appropriation of texts, i.e. work that would establish firm foundations for future research. In line with this orientation, the first issue of Libellarium brings papers devoted to two issues. The papers by Aleksandar Stipčević, Željko Vegh and Slavko Harni present some of the possible sources for the history of books: private library inventories, records of canonical visitations and bibliographies. The papers by Jelena Lakuš, Maja Krtalić, Zorka Renić and Tatjana Kreštan examine the social circumstances of reading, librarianship and periodical publishing: preconditions for reading in Dalmatian reading societies in the early 19th century, the possibilities of publishers’ advertisements in newspapers from Osijek in the late 19th century, and the context of publishing local weekly journal (Tjednik bjelovarsko-križevački) in the late 19th and early 20th century. The paper by Andy White on the modern digital environment and the return of the age-old idea of a universal library may seem to be different from the two prevailing strands in other papers in this issue, but it also focuses on the examination of the general social and technological framework that accentuates this idea in certain historical periods. In addition to publishing research papers, Libellarium will also publish reprints of sources for the history of books. In this issue, following the paper by Slavko Harni, we bring the bibliography Književnost bosanska by Ivan Franjo Jukić.Finally, following the tradition of research journals, Libellarium will also publish reviews of important works on the history of the written word, books and heritage institutions.

Inovativni doprinos rada ponajprije čini razrada svjetonazorske cenzure iz teorijske perspektive istraživanja čitateljskih navika, potom razrada pozitivnih i negativnih posljedica uključivanja IT tvrtki u proizvodnju i distribuciju knjiga i isticanje vrijednosti tradicionalne uloge nakladnika bez koje autorska kreativnost ostaje nevidljiva, ne-objavljena, doslovce ne-javna.
This paper aims to analyse the relationship between contemporary society and the publishing industry that provides a framework of possibilities of book content mediation. Four aspects are considered: the plenitude of books; censorship imposed by society or associations onto these books; the role of IT companies that started a revolution in content distribution but at the same time jeopardised intellectual property rights and, finally; the position of the publisher as the remaining sole patron of content quality. The paper is based on the content analysis of recent academic research in publishing studies as well as insights into contemporary statistics and media reports. The paper contributes to book and media research by exploring censorship imposed by certain social groups based on modern research into reading habits, observations of the positive and negative impacts of IT companies on the publishing industry and the status of authors and intellectual property and, lastly, emphasizing the role of publishers as content managers, since without them the creativity of authors remains non-public, literally invisible.
Introduction: The point of departure for this paper is the twofold analogy (analogy of content, analogy of medium) between printed and electronic books, the aim being to draw attention to the usual ...perception of their capacities and relationships, to provide a rather detailed analysis of the outcome and sustainability of such analogies and ultimately to indicate the drawbacks involved. Method: The contextual analysis of contents of the key themes is employed; in the articulation of the conclusions, analytic and synthetic approaches are used. Results: The definitions of the e-book are not consensual or sustainable, rather reflect the current developmental phase of the phenomenon. The emphasis is placed upon changes, and continuity is ignored, and it is not seen that the possibility of analogies derives from a long historical development. While the analogy of content is sustainable, for it implies the reproduction of the same discourses in different media, analogy of medium is not, for the interactive capacities permitted by the printed and the electronic medium are different. Conclusions: The e-book discourse has to be expanded by understandings drawn from cognate areas such as book history, publishing studies and in general by those from the extremely useful insights employed in the cultural-historical approach, for all the media functioning in any given period coexist and affect each other.
This paper analyses book dedications in a specific genre, religious writing, in a linguistically small and peripheral region of the Habsburg Empire, endeavouring thereby to open up new comparative ...perspectives in the understanding of the system of patronage. After a review of the most frequent problems encompassed by recent research, the specific features of the concrete original research corpus are elaborated, with an emphasis on problems hitherto less investigated: the correlation of the dedication and other paratextual parts of the book; the practice of dedicating works to saints of the Catholic Church, which relativises the understanding of the dedication as a form of the exchange of authorial work for material benefits; and the functionalisation of the name of the patron, which enables the creation of the concept of the patron function. The analysis supports the understanding of patronage as a dynamic system that rested upon the human interactions possible in the given and specific spatial and temporal contexts.

Cilj.
Rezultati. Usporedba hrvatskog s razvijenim inozemnim nakladničkim tržištima u navedenom razdoblju ukazuje na goleme razlike. Hrvatski nakladnici u to doba prolaze kroz izazove pretvorbe i privatizacije, a globalni nakladnički izazovi 1990-ih, poput digitalizacije poslovanja, padaju u drugi plan.
The aim of this paper is to investigate and present concepts of the author and his/her copyright work in copyright legislation that entered into force in Croatia from 1846 to 2007. 17 legal documents ...(acts, corrigenda, amendments) were investigated using the content analysis method. The analysis of the results gives an insight into various cultural and sociological dimensions of authorship in the given time-frame. Special attention was paid to definitions of the author and his/her copyright work, examples of copyright works and exceptions related to the duration of copyright for different kinds of copyright works. As there had been no systematic overview of such legal documents in the available literature, they were briefly described in the first part of the paper, highlighting the important articles that stress the role of authors and their copyright work. In the analysis and summary we provide a systematic overview of the main concepts, with a special review of copyright laws in relation to new technologies and artistic forms: it is their relationship that testifies to the complexity of the term 'copyright work'. The paper shows that the basic perception of the author, his/her copyright works and their relations in the analysed copyright legislation has not changed significantly during this period of time. All legal documents refer to the examples of copyright work, and in 1957 a definition of copyright work was included, according to which copyright work is every spiritual (later referred to as intellectual) creation. The concept of the author is strongly linked with the concept of author's copyright work. Various examples of copyright works allow us to see the difference between works that are permanent (e.g. literary works, music works, art works) and works that are yet to be protected by copyright thanks to the development of technology and new features of artistic expression (e.g. photography, movies, computer programs). The process of getting copyright is reflected in articles that regulate the duration of copyright.
This paper gives an outline of e-book business in Croatia, another European small language market, based on surveys of seven mayor e-book distributors conducted in February 2013 and February 2014. ...The research included collecting web catalogues by various e-book distributors and an interview with their representatives, asking them to confirm the established number of e-books. After data collection, researchers analysed and presented the exact number of unique e-book titles, publisher’s participation, types of e-book formats and their prices. The findings show that there are 1.654 unique e-book titles by 55 publishers currently available on seven main platforms, the most popular e-book format is EPUB (55%), while the average retail price is EUR 5,86.
Cilj.
Purpose. This paper aims to research and analyse data about acquisition policiesof Croatian academic libraries in respect to e-books, librarians’ satisfaction regarding databases and e-book suppliers, problems they encounter, and the impact of COVID-19 pandemics on acquisition and lending policies. An additional aim is to clarify the reasons of slow integrations of e-books into collections of academic libraries. Approach/methodology/design. A questionnaire survey was conducted using theLimeSurvey application. The questionnaire was designed at the Universities of Boras and Gothenburg and used for the research of e-book impact at Swedish publishing, bookselling and librarianship. The same questionnaire was also used in Lithvania and finally in Croatia. A quantitative analysis of the results was performed, while in their interpretation a comparative method was used to compare the results of the research with the content analyses of available recent literature. Findings. Croatian academic libraries, with one single exception, do not purchasee-books. However, they have experience in e-book use and lending, either through database subscriptions or through using open access contents. As purchase for permanent ownership is the dominant or important model in comparable markets, the possible causes of such a difference are analysed in the conclusion. Research limitations/implications. Since only one academic library purchasese-books for permanent ownership, the survey results regarding acquisition policies are not highly representative. Originality/value. This is the first paper that investigates the issue of integrationof e-book in the collections of Croatian academic libraries. Among the most important contributions are the guidelines for the model of an ideal e-book lending system (e.g. one platform for all books, removal of DRM restrictions, etc.) from librarians’ point of view, and final recommendations for a more functional system of e-book acquisition and lending models based on an analysis of recent literature overview and comparable foreign experiences.
