Pravilna prehrana iznimno je važna u prevenciji šećerne bolesti i regulaciji glikemije. Šećerna bolest ubraja se u kategoriju bolesti koje se uspješno mogu prevenirati, dobro liječiti te im se može ...spriječiti ili odgoditi razvoj kroničnih komplikacija. Edukacija o pravilnoj prehrani treba biti individualno prilagođena, pri čemu treba obratiti pozornost na dob bolesnika, način života, socioekonomski status, tjelesnu aktivnost i komplikacije vezane uz šećernu bolest. Kod šećerne bolesti promjena životnih navika, što uključuje pravilnu prehranu, redovitu tjelesnu aktivnost i regulaciju tjelesne mase, može uvelike pridonijeti regulaciji glikemije, a u tipu 2 u nekim slučajevima može dovesti i do njene remisije. Smjernice su rezultat suradnje zdravstvenih stručnjaka koji sudjeluju u liječenju i edukaciji osoba koje boluju od šećerne bolesti. Utemeljene su na dokazima, prema metodologiji GRADE (engl. grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluation) koja uz snagu dokaza opisuje i razinu preporuke. Temeljni zaključci ovih smjernica odnose se na procjenu nutritivnih potreba te primjenu medicinske nutritivne terapije, individualno prilagođene osobama sa šećernom bolešću kao i onima koji imaju i neke od
vezanih komorbiditeta.
Oral mucositis (OM) occurs in more than 95% of patients irradiated in the head and neck area. This paper aims to determine the occurrence and characteristics of OM in patients with head and neck ...cancer (HNC), as well as the involvement of dentists/oral medicine specialists in treating such patients.
: This study was conducted at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Department of Oral Medicine, University Hospital Center Zagreb, from April to August 2022, on patients irradiated in the head and neck area. A unique OM questionnaire was created on the incidence, characteristics, oral care, and involvement of dentists in the overall care.
: Thirty patients filled out the questionnaire. Of the 22 patients who had developed OM, 14 had grade-three OM. Ten patients were treated for OM in line with the instructions of an oral medicine specialist, eight based on the instructions of a specialist responsible for monitoring of the underlying disease, and four were not treated at all. Sixteen patients had not been referred to a dentist before the start of RT.
: These results showed insufficient care and treatment of OM, as well as insufficient involvement of dentists in the oncology team.
Particulate matter (PM) pollution is one of the major threats to cultural heritage outdoors. It has been recently implied that organic aerosols will prevail over inorganic carbon particulates in the ...future, changing the main mechanisms of damage caused by poor air quality to calcareous heritage in particular. We studied fresh particulate deposits on marble and limestone surfaces exposed to urban air in sheltered and unsheltered configurations. Due to different air pollution sources in different seasons, the amount and composition of surface deposits varied throughout the year. The main and most constant contributor to PM2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 μm) were primary traffic emissions (30 %), followed by secondary formation of acidic inorganic aerosols, such as sulphate in summer and nitrate in winter (33 % altogether), and seasonal biomass-burning emissions (14 %). Although biomass burning is the major source of primary organic aerosols including the light-absorbing fraction that prevailed over black carbon (BC) in colder months (up to 60 % carbonaceous aerosol mass), we show that surface darkening causing the soiling effect is still governed by the minor BC fraction of atmospheric aerosols, which remained below 20 % of the carbonaceous aerosol mass throughout the year. This, however, can change in remote environments affected by biomass-burning emissions, such as winter resorts, or by rigorous BC mitigation measures in the future. In the short run, sheltered positions were less affected by different removal processes, but we show that surface deposits are not simply additive when considering longer periods of time. This must be taken into account when extrapolating surface accumulation to longer time scales.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a serious inflammation of the mucosa and occurs in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) who are being treated with radiotherapy (RT) and/or chemotherapy (CT), and in ...patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The inflammation accompanied with painful ulcerations inside the oral cavity impairs its function making the basic functions like eating and speech hard or even impossible. It usually occurs at the end of the first week of RT and lasts for several weeks after cessation. The intensity of OM can sometimes lead to discontinuation of RT. The degree of mucositis regarding chemotherapy depends on the type of antineoplastic drug, therapeutic procedure, duration of the therapy and dose, as well as previous exposure of the oral cavity to toxic agents.Prolonged or repeated administration of lower doses of chemotherapy is associated with a higher chance of developing oral mucositis comparing to a bolus, while chronomodulation of chemotherapy reduces the possibility of mucositis without affecting antineoplastic activity. The treatment of OM is symptomatic, as there is still no effective treatment. In this review paper, several contemporary options for alleviating the symptoms of oral mucositis are listed.
Oralni mukozitis (OM) ozbiljna je upala sluznice i javlja se u bolesnika s karcinomom glave i vrata (HNC) koji se liječe radioterapijom (RT) i/ili kemoterapijom (CT) te u bolesnika koji su podvrgnuti transplantaciji hematopoetskih matičnih stanica (HSCT). Upala praćena bolnim ulceracijama unutar usne šupljine narušava njezinu funkciju, čineći osnovne funkcije poput prehrane i govora teškim ili čak nemogućim. Obično se javlja na kraju prvog tjedna radioterapije i traje nekoliko tjedana nakon prestanka. Intenzitet oralnog mukozitisa ponekad može dovesti do prekida radioterapije. Stupanj mukozitisa kod kemoterapije ovisi o vrsti antineoplastičnog lijeka, terapijskom postupku, trajanju terapije i dozi, kao i o prethodnoj izloženosti usne šupljine toksičnim agensima. Produljena ili ponovljena primjena nižih doza kemoterapije povezana je s većom šansom za razvoj oralnog mukozitisa u usporedbi s bolusom, dok kronomodulacija kemoterapije smanjuje mogućnost mukozitisa bez utjecaja na antineoplastično djelovanje. Liječenje oralnog mukozitisa je simptomatsko jer još uvijek nema učinkovitog lijeka. U ovom preglednom radu navodi se nekoliko suvremenih opcija za ublažavanje simptoma oralnog mukozitisa.
Gene therapy holds promise for a curative mutation-independent treatment applicable to all patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The various viral vector-based clinical trials conducted in the past ...have demonstrated safety and tolerance of different vectors, but none have led to a clear and persistent clinical benefit. Recent clinical breakthroughs in recombinant adeno-associated viral vector (rAAV)-based gene therapy encouraged us to reexplore an rAAV approach for CF.
We evaluated the preclinical potential of rAAV gene therapy for CF to restore chloride and fluid secretion in two complementary models: intestinal organoids derived from subjects with CF and a CF mouse model, an important milestone toward the development of a clinical rAAV candidate for CF gene therapy.
We engineered an rAAV vector containing a truncated CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTRΔR) combined with a short promoter (CMV173) to ensure optimal gene expression. A rescue in chloride and fluid secretion after rAAV-CFTRΔR treatment was assessed by forskolin-induced swelling in CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)-deficient organoids and by nasal potential differences in ΔF508 mice.
rAAV-CFTRΔR transduction of human CFTR-deficient organoids resulted in forskolin-induced swelling, indicating a restoration of CFTR function. Nasal potential differences demonstrated a clear response to low chloride and forskolin perfusion in most rAAV-CFTRΔR-treated CF mice.
Our study provides robust evidence that rAAV-mediated gene transfer of a truncated CFTR functionally rescues the CF phenotype across the nasal mucosa of CF mice and in patient-derived organoids. These results underscore the clinical potential of rAAV-CFTRΔR in offering a cure for all patients with CF in the future.

We study the effect on trade in intermediates and final goods of the Central East European Countries’ (CEECs) accession into the European Union (EU) for the period 1999–2009. In doing so, we estimate ...a gravity model that incorporates the extensive margin of trade and accounts for firm heterogeneity. We capture the importance of production networks by including imports of intermediates as a determinant of a country’s exports of final goods. We find a positive and significant effect of the CEECs accession on EU trade in intermediate and final goods. Once the extensive margin of trade is accounted for, the effect of the CEECs accession into the EU is higher on trade in intermediate goods than on trade in final goods.
Lolium perenne (cv. AberDart) was grown at 14 locations along a latitudinal gradient across Europe (37–68°N) to study the impact of ultraviolet radiation (UV) and climate on aboveground growth and ...foliar UV‐B absorbing compounds. At each location, plants were grown outdoors for 5 weeks in a replicated UV‐B filtration experiment consisting of open, UV‐B transparent (cellulose diacetate) and UV‐B opaque (polyester) environments. Fourier transform‐infrared spectroscopy was used to compare plant metabolite profiles in relation to treatment and location. UV radiation and climatic parameters were determined for each location from online sources and the data were assessed using a combination of anova and multiple regression analyses. Most of the variation in growth between the locations was attributable to the combination of climatic parameters, with minimum temperature identified as an important growth constraint. However, no single environmental parameter could consistently account for the variability in plant growth. Concentrations of foliar UV‐B absorbing compounds showed a positive trend with solar UV across the latitudinal gradient; however, this relationship was not consistent in all treatments. The most striking experimental outcome from this study was the effect of presence or absence of filtration frames on UV‐absorbing compounds. Overall, the study demonstrates the value of an European approach in studying the impacts of natural UV across a large latitudinal gradient. We have shown the feasibility of coordinated UV filtration at multiple sites but have also highlighted the need for open controls and careful interpretation of plant responses.
