Although understanding the carbon and water cycles of dryland ecosystems in terms of water use efficiency (WUE) is important, WUE and its driving mechanisms are less understood in Central Asia. This ...study calculated Central Asian WUE for 2001–2021 based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and analyzed its spatial and temporal variability using temporal information entropy. The importance of atmospheric factors, hydrological factors, and biological factors in driving WUE in Central Asia was also explored using a geographic detector. The results show the following: (1) the average WUE in Central Asia from 2001–2021 is 2.584–3.607 gCkg−1H2O, with weak inter-annual variability and significant intra-annual variability and spatial distribution changes; (2) atmospheric and hydrological factors are strong drivers, with land surface temperature (LST) being the strongest driver of WUE, explaining 54.8% of variation; (3) the interaction of the driving factors can enhance the driving effect by more than 60% for the interaction between most atmospheric factors and vegetation factors, of which the effect of the interaction of temperature (TEM) with vegetation cover (FVC) is the greatest, explaining 68.1% of the change in WUE. Furthermore, the interaction of driving factors with very low explanatory power (e.g., water pressure (VAP), aerosol optical depth over land (AOD), and groundwater (GWS)) has a significant enhancement effect. Vegetation is an important link in driving WUE, and it is important to understand the mechanisms of WUE change to guide ecological restoration projects.
The ecological quality of inland areas is an important aspect of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). The ecological environment of Northwest China is vulnerable to changes in ...climate and land use/land cover, and the changes in ecological quality in this arid region over the last two decades are not well understood. This makes it more difficult to advance the UN SDGs and develop appropriate measures at the regional level. In this study, we used the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products to generate remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to examine the relationship between ecological quality and environment in Xinjiang during the last two decades (from 2000 to 2020). We analyzed a 21-year time series of the trends and spatial characteristics of ecological quality. We further assessed the importance of different environmental factors affecting ecological quality through the random forest algorithm using data from statistical yearbooks and land use products. Our results show that the RSEI constructed using the GEE platform can accurately reflect the ecological quality information in Xinjiang because the contribution of the first principal component was higher than 90.00%. The ecological quality in Xinjiang has increased significantly over the last two decades, with the northern part of this region having a better ecological quality than the southern part. The areas with slightly improved ecological quality accounted for 31.26% of the total land area of Xinjiang, whereas only 3.55% of the land area was classified as having a slightly worsen (3.16%) or worsen (0.39%) ecological quality. The vast majority of the deterioration in ecological quality mainly occurred in the barren areas Temperature, precipitation, closed shrublands, grasslands and savannas were the top five environmental factors affecting the changes in RSEI. Environmental factors were allocated different weights for different RSEI categories. In general, the recovery of ecological quality in Xinjiang has been controlled by climate and land use/land cover during the last two decades and policy-driven ecological restoration is therefore crucial. Rapid monitoring of inland ecological quality using the GEE platform is projected to aid in the advancement of the comprehensive assessment of the UN SDGs.
A dynamic model of an L-shaped multi-beam joint structure is presented to investigate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the system. Firstly, the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of ...motion for the beams, the governing equations of the tip mass, and their matching conditions and boundary conditions are obtained. The natural frequencies and the global mode shapes of the linearized model of the system are determined, and the orthogonality relations of the global mode shapes are established. Then, the global mode shapes and their orthogonality relations are used to derive a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that govern the motion of the L-shaped multi-beam jointed structure. The accuracy of the model is verified by the comparison of the natural frequencies solved by the frequency equation and the ANSYS. Based on the nonlinear ODEs obtained in this model, the dynamic responses are worked out to investigate the effect of the tip mass and the joint on the nonlinear dynamic characteristic of the system. The results show that the inertia of the tip mass and the nonlinear stiffness of the joints have a great influence on the nonlinear response of the system.
The validation of remotely sensed evapotranspiration (ET) products is important for the development of ET estimation models and the accuracy of the scientific application of the products. In this ...study, different ET products such as HiTLL, MOD16A2, ETMonitor, and SoGAE were compared using multi-source remote sensing data and ground-based data to evaluate their applicability in the Heihe River Basin (HRB) during 2010–2019. The results of the comparison with the site observations show that ETMonitor provides a more stable and reliable estimation of ET than the other three products. The ET exhibited significant variations over the decade, characterized by a general increase in rates across the HRB. These changes were markedly influenced by variations in land use and topographical features. Specifically, the analysis showed that farmland and forested areas had higher ET rates due to greater vegetation cover and moisture availability, while grasslands and water bodies demonstrated lower ET rates, reflecting their respective land cover characteristics. This study further explored the influence of various factors on ET, including land use changes, NDVI, temperature, and precipitation. It was found that changes in land use, such as increases in agricultural areas or reforestation efforts, directly influenced ET rates. Moreover, meteorological conditions such as temperature and precipitation patterns also played crucial roles, with warmer temperatures and higher precipitation correlating with increased ET. This study highlights the significant impact of land use and climatic factors on spatiotemporal variations in ET within the HRB, underscoring its importance for optimizing water resource management and land use planning in arid regions.
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a dominant inherited disease caused mainly by low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene mutations. To different extents, both heterozygous and homozygous FH ...patients develop premature coronary heart disease (CHD). However, most of the experimental animal models with LDLR deficiency could not fully recapitulate FH because they develop hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis only in homozygous, but not in heterozygous, form. In the current study, we investigated the responsiveness of the LDLR+/- hamster to dietary cholesterol and whether plasma cholesterol levels were positively associated with the severity of atherosclerosis. Approach and Methods: wild type WT and LDLR+/- hamsters were fed a high fat diet with different cholesterol contents (HCHF) for 12 or 16 weeks. Plasma lipids, (apo)lipoproteins, and atherosclerosis in both the aorta and coronary arteries were analyzed. After a HCHF diet challenge, the levels of total cholesterol (TC) in WT and LDLR+/- hamsters were significantly elevated, but the latter showed a more pronounced lipoprotein profile, with higher cholesterol levels that were positively correlated with dietary cholesterol contents. The LDLR+/- hamsters also showed accelerated atherosclerotic lesions in the aorta and coronary arteries, whereas only mild aortic lesions were observed in WT hamsters.
Our findings demonstrate that, unlike other rodent animals, the levels of plasma cholesterol in hamsters can be significantly modulated by the intervention of dietary cholesterol, which were closely associated with severity of atherosclerosis in LDLR+/- hamsters, suggesting that the LDLR+/- hamster is an ideal animal model for FH and has great potential in the study of FH and atherosclerosis-related CHD.
The Chang 7 reservoir in Changqing oilfield is rich in tight oil. However, due to the low formation permeability, it is very difficult to obtain economical oil production without stimulation ...treatments. Volume fracturing seems to be a more efficient tight oil recovery enhancement (EOR) method in Chang 7 pilot tests compared with conventional hydraulic fracturing. In this study, Chang 7 tight oil reservoir was first characterized by its geological property, hydrocarbon source rock distribution, and formation physiochemical property. Tight core flooding tests were then conducted to experimentally investigate the EOR ability of the volume fracturing technique. The field-scale practice was also demonstrated and analyzed. The results show that Chang 7 reservoir is favorable for the generation of a large amount of tight oil. Fractures created in tight cores can significantly improve the fluid flow conductivity and enhance the imbibition of displacing water, resulting in a greater tight oil recovery increment. Volume fracturing is an effective way to generate a larger number of fractures. Field application indicates that volume fracturing treatment can form a much greater reservoir stimulation volume. Daily oil production in the volume-fracturing-treated wells can be more than twice as high as that in the conventional-fracturing-treated wells.
Osteoarthritis impairs the functions of various joints, such as knees, hips, hands and spine, which causes pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced mobility in joints. Multiple factors, including age, ...joint injuries, obesity, and mechanical stress, could contribute to osteoarthritis development and progression. Evidence has demonstrated that genetics and epigenetics play a critical role in osteoarthritis initiation and progression. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been revealed to participate in osteoarthritis development. In this review, we describe the pivotal functions and molecular mechanisms of numerous lncRNAs in osteoarthritis progression. We mention that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) could be biomarkers for osteoarthritis diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic targets. Moreover, we highlight the several compounds that alleviate osteoarthritis progression in part via targeting lncRNAs. Furthermore, we provide the future perspectives regarding the potential application of lncRNAs in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of osteoarthritis.
Interleukin 34 (IL-34), an additional ligand of the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF-1R), promotes the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and stimulates NF-κB and JNK-related signaling ...pathways. However, the potential mechanism and prognostic value of IL-34 in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remain obscure. In this study, IL-34 was found to be downregulated in LUAD tissues compared with para-carcinoma tissues, and loss of IL-34 expression was correlated with shorter overall survival (OS), which was validated by bioinformatics\ analysis in TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) cohort and immunohistochemical analysis in the NTU (Nantong University) cohort, respectively. Subsequently, loss of IL-34 promotes negative regulation of the immune system and inhibits the infiltration of immune cells. Moreover, IL-34 deficiency was shown to be an independent adverse prognostic factor for patients with LUAD, and subgroup analysis indicated that IL-34 might contribute to the stratified management of patients with LUAD. IL-34-based nomogram model significantly improved the accuracy of prognostic predictions for OS of patients with LUAD, both in the TCGA cohort and the NTU cohort. Taken together, our data suggested that loss of IL-34 expression is associated with poor prognosis and negative regulation of the immune system of patients with LUAD, contributing to the stratified management of patients with LUAD.

However, there are only limited rodent models, with a functional low-density ...lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) pathway and cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) to evaluate the drug candidates targeting the PCSK9/LDLR pathway, that are translatable to humans. Here, by using our recently generated LDLR heterozygote (
) hamster model with functional LDLR pathway and CETP function, we seek to evaluate the effect of a PCSK9 antibody, evolocumab, on dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis compared with ezetimibe, an effective inhibitor of cholesterol absorption, as a positive therapeutic control. We show that the plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) were significantly increased in
hamsters fed a high-fat high-cholesterol (HFHC) diet; therefore, areas of atherosclerotic lesion in the aorta were obviously increased and positively correlated with plasma LDL-C and TC. Circulating free PCSK9 was downregulated by the HFHC diet and was undetectable in the evolocumab treated group, as expected. Most importantly, either evolocumab or ezetimibe treatment prevented HFHC diet-induced hyperlipidemia and subsequent atherosclerotic plaque formation. The results indicate that
+/- hamsters fed an HFHC diet represent an ideal rodent model to evaluate drug candidates that affect LDLR pathways.
