A superdeformed band has been observed for the first time in an Au isotope. The reaction used was B-11 + W-186, demonstrating that very light ions can be used to populate superdeformed (SD) bands at ...high angular momentum. The band is assigned to 191Au. The gamma-ray energies are at the quarter-point energies of the 192Hg SD band, indicating that it is ''identical'' to that of 192Hg.
The first measurement of beta decay in Zn-80, a critical N = 50 waiting- point nucleus in the evaluation of different models of r-process environments and exposure times, is reported. Using the ...TRISTAN mass separator on line to the Brookhaven high-flux beam reactor, a half-life of 0.55 + or - 0.02 was measured for the neutron-rich fission product nucleus Zn-80(50). A Q-beta value for the decay of Zn-80 of 7.15 + or - 0.15 MeV, and a decay scheme for Zn-80 comprising low-lying levels and prominent gamma rays in Ga-80, are also deduced. A mass excess of -52.28 + or - 0.46 MeV is obtained for Zn-80. (R.R.)
We present an improved measurement of the double helicity asymmetry for pi(0) production in polarized proton-proton scattering at root s=200 GeV employing the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic ...Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The improvements to our previous measurement come from two main factors: Inclusion of a new data set from the 2004 RHIC run with higher beam polarizations than the earlier run and a recalibration of the beam polarization measurements for the earlier run, which resulted in reduced uncertainties and increased beam polarizations. The results are compared to a Next to Leading Order (NLO) perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.
Half-lives of 5.60(15) and 1.58(4) ns were measured for the 0{sub 2}{sup +} levels in {sup 100}Zr and {sup 100}Mo, respectively, using a {beta}-{gamma}-{gamma} fast timing method. Analysis of the ...revised {rho}({ital E}0) systematics in the crucial {ital A}{congruent}100 region indicates that high values of {rho}({ital E}0) do not by themselves imply strong configuration mixing between two coexisting states as presently assumed.
