Family farms are the main force that promotes the direct application of new agricultural technology to production. So what are the factors that affect the adoption of new agricultural technology by ...family farms, and can the adoption of new technology increase the operating income of family farms? Using cross-sectional data from 847 family farms, this study examines the determinants and impacts of multiple new agricultural technologies adoption on family farms' income in China. To account for selection bias from both observable and unobservable factors, an endogenous switching regression model is employed to evaluate the effects of new agricultural technology on family farms' income. The empirical results show that the adoption of new agricultural technology is affected by the endowment of farmers and the characteristics of family farms. After controlling for the selection bias, the adoption of new agricultural technologies has a positive and significant impact on family farms' income. And the impact on the non-adopter family farms is much larger than adopter family farms. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that family farms with a larger area of arable land earn more from the adoption of new technologies than small farms. In all types of technology investigated, the new methods of pest control and the new chemical fertilizer technology have a relatively large impact on family farms' income, while the new mechanical technology has the least impact on family farms' income. The adoption of new technologies by family farms is more important for promoting the progress of agricultural science and technology. Therefore, it is necessary to take effective measures to overcome the obstacles to the adoption of new agricultural technologies and pay more attention to the use of new agricultural technologies to improve agricultural production efficiency.
Solid‐state batteries are hindered from practical applications, largely due to the retardant ionic transportation kinetics in solid electrolytes (SEs) and across electrode/electrolyte interfaces. ...Taking advantage of nanostructured UIO/Li‐IL SEs, fast lithium ion transportation is achieved in the bulk and across the electrode/electrolyte interfaces; in UIO/Li‐IL SEs, Li‐containing ionic liquid (Li‐IL) is absorbed in Uio‐66 metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The ionic conductivity of the UIO/Li‐IL (15/16) SE reaches 3.2 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C. Owing to the high surface tension of nanostructured UIO/Li‐IL SEs, the contact between electrodes and the SE is excellent; consequently, the interfacial resistances of Li/SE and LiFePO4/SE at 60 °C are about 44 and 206 Ω cm2, respectively. Moreover, a stable solid conductive layer is formed at the Li/SE interface, making the Li plating/stripping stable. Solid‐state batteries from the UIO/Li‐IL SEs show high discharge capacities and excellent retentions (≈130 mA h g−1 with a retention of 100% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C; 119 mA h g−1 with a retention of 94% after 380 cycles at 1 C). This new type of nanostructured UIO/Li‐IL SEs is very promising for solid‐state batteries, and will open up an avenue toward safe and long lifespan energy storage systems.
After absorbing ionic liquid Li‐IL, nanostructured MOFs of Uio‐66 become a new kind of solid electrolyte (UIO/Li‐IL). The UIO/Li‐IL solid electrolyte shows a high ionic conductivity, good stability against metallic Li electrode, and low solid electrolyte/electrode interfacial resistances. The solid‐state lithium batteries using the UIO/Li‐IL solid electrolyte exhibit a high capacity and excellent retention.
Abstract
Driven by high-throughput sequencing techniques, modern genomic and clinical studies are in a strong need of integrative machine learning models for better use of vast volumes of ...heterogeneous information in the deep understanding of biological systems and the development of predictive models. How data from multiple sources (called multi-view data) are incorporated in a learning system is a key step for successful analysis. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review on omics and clinical data integration techniques, from a machine learning perspective, for various analyses such as prediction, clustering, dimension reduction and association. We shall show that Bayesian models are able to use prior information and model measurements with various distributions; tree-based methods can either build a tree with all features or collectively make a final decision based on trees learned from each view; kernel methods fuse the similarity matrices learned from individual views together for a final similarity matrix or learning model; network-based fusion methods are capable of inferring direct and indirect associations in a heterogeneous network; matrix factorization models have potential to learn interactions among features from different views; and a range of deep neural networks can be integrated in multi-modal learning for capturing the complex mechanism of biological systems.
Given the highly increased incidence of human diseases, a better understanding of the related mechanisms regarding endogenous metabolism is urgently needed. Mass spectrometry-based metabolomics has ...been used in a variety of disease research areas. However, the deep research of metabolites remains a difficult and lengthy process. Fortunately, mass spectrometry is considered to be a universal tool with high specificity and sensitivity and is widely used around the world. Mass spectrometry technology has been applied to various basic disciplines, providing technical support for the discovery and identification of endogenous substances in living organisms. The combination of metabolomics and mass spectrometry is of great significance for the discovery and identification of metabolite biomarkers. The mass spectrometry tool could further improve and develop the exploratory research of the life sciences. This mini review discusses metabolomics biotechnology with a focus on recent applications of metabolomics as a powerful tool to elucidate metabolic disturbances and the related mechanisms of diseases.

We devise a novel colorimetric aptasensor for multiplex antibiotics based on an ss-DNA fragment coordinately controlling gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) aggregation. The multifunctional aptamer (Apt) was elaborately designed to be adsorbed on AuNPs surfaces acting as a binding element for antibiotics and a molecular switch. Chloramphenicol (CAP) and tetracycline (TET) were selected as the model antibiotics. When one kind of antibiotics was added, the specifically recognized fragment of Apt can bind to it and dissociated, and the non-specific one coordinately controls AuNPs aggregation under high-salt conditions. Hence, different color changes of AuNPs solution can be used as the signal readout. The aptasensor exhibited remarkable selectivity and sensitivity for separate detection of TET and CAP, and the detection limits are estimated to be 32.9 and 7.0 nM, respectively. The analysis with the absorption spectroscopy and the smartphone are applied to detect antibiotics in real samples with consistent results and desirable recoveries.
Many evidences have demonstrated that circRNAs (circular RNA) play important roles in controlling gene expression of human, mouse and nematode. More importantly, circRNAs are also involved in many ...diseases through fine tuning of post-transcriptional gene expression by sequestering the miRNAs which associate with diseases. Therefore, identifying the circRNA-disease associations is very appealing to comprehensively understand the mechanism, treatment and diagnose of diseases, yet challenging. As the complex mechanism between circRNAs and diseases, wet-lab experiments are expensive and time-consuming to discover novel circRNA-disease associations. Therefore, it is of dire need to employ the computational methods to discover novel circRNA-disease associations.
In this study, we develop a method (DWNN-RLS) to predict circRNA-disease associations based on Regularized Least Squares of Kronecker product kernel. The similarity of circRNAs is computed from the Gaussian Interaction Profile(GIP) based on known circRNA-disease associations. In addition, the similarity of diseases is integrated by the mean of GIP similarity and sematic similarity which is computed by the direct acyclic graph (DAG) representation of diseases. The kernels of circRNA-disease pairs are constructed from the Kronecker product of the kernels of circRNAs and diseases. DWNN (decreasing weight k-nearest neighbor) method is adopted to calculate the initial relational score for new circRNAs and diseases. The Kronecker product kernel based regularised least squares approach is used to predict new circRNA-disease associations. We adopt 5-fold cross validation (5CV), 10-fold cross validation (10CV) and leave one out cross validation (LOOCV) to assess the prediction performance of our method, and compare it with other six competing methods (RLS-avg, RLS-Kron, NetLapRLS, KATZ, NBI, WP).
The experiment results show that DWNN-RLS reaches the AUC values of 0.8854, 0.9205 and 0.9701 in 5CV, 10CV and LOOCV, respectively, which illustrates that DWNN-RLS is superior to the competing methods RLS-avg, RLS-Kron, NetLapRLS, KATZ, NBI, WP. In addition, case studies also show that DWNN-RLS is an effective method to predict new circRNA-disease associations.
This paper examines the role of technological capability in product innovation. Building on the absorptive capacity perspective and organizational inertia theory, the authors propose that ...technological capability has curvilinear and dijferential effects on exploitative and explorative innovations. The findings support the proposition that though technological capability fosters exploitation at an accelerating rate, it has an inverted U-shaped relationship with exploration.That is, a high level of technological capability impedes explorative innovation. Strategic flexibility strengthens the positive effects of technological capability on exploration, such that when strategic flexibility is high, greater technological capability is associated with more explorative innovation.
Abstract
Drug repositioning can drastically decrease the cost and duration taken by traditional drug research and development while avoiding the occurrence of unforeseen adverse events. With the ...rapid advancement of high-throughput technologies and the explosion of various biological data and medical data, computational drug repositioning methods have been appealing and powerful techniques to systematically identify potential drug-target interactions and drug-disease interactions. In this review, we first summarize the available biomedical data and public databases related to drugs, diseases and targets. Then, we discuss existing drug repositioning approaches and group them based on their underlying computational models consisting of classical machine learning, network propagation, matrix factorization and completion, and deep learning based models. We also comprehensively analyze common standard data sets and evaluation metrics used in drug repositioning, and give a brief comparison of various prediction methods on the gold standard data sets. Finally, we conclude our review with a brief discussion on challenges in computational drug repositioning, which includes the problem of reducing the noise and incompleteness of biomedical data, the ensemble of various computation drug repositioning methods, the importance of designing reliable negative samples selection methods, new techniques dealing with the data sparseness problem, the construction of large-scale and comprehensive benchmark data sets and the analysis and explanation of the underlying mechanisms of predicted interactions.
The human gastrointestinal tract colonizes a large number of microbial microflora, forms a host-microbiota co-metabolism structure with the host to participate in various metabolic processes in the ...human body, and plays a major role in the host immune response. In addition, the dysbiosis of intestinal microbial homeostasis is closely related to many diseases. Thus, an in-depth understanding of the relationship between them is of importance for disease pathogenesis, prevention and treatment. The combined use of metagenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics techniques for the analysis of gut microbiota can reveal the relationship between microbiota and the host in many ways, which has become a hot topic of analysis in recent years. This review describes the mechanism of co-metabolites in host health, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and bile acid metabolism. The metabolic role of gut microbiota in obesity, liver diseases, gastrointestinal diseases and other diseases is also summarized, and the research methods for multi-omics combined application on gut microbiota are summarized. According to the studies of the interaction mechanism between gut microbiota and the host, we have a better understanding of the use of intestinal microflora in the treatment of related diseases. It is hoped that the gut microbiota can be utilized to maintain human health, providing a reference for future research.

Motivation
Protein–protein interactions (PPIs) play important roles in many biological processes. Conventional biological experiments for identifying PPI sites are costly and time-consuming. ...Thus, many computational approaches have been proposed to predict PPI sites. Existing computational methods usually use local contextual features to predict PPI sites. Actually, global features of protein sequences are critical for PPI site prediction.
Results
A new end-to-end deep learning framework, named DeepPPISP, through combining local contextual and global sequence features, is proposed for PPI site prediction. For local contextual features, we use a sliding window to capture features of neighbors of a target amino acid as in previous studies. For global sequence features, a text convolutional neural network is applied to extract features from the whole protein sequence. Then the local contextual and global sequence features are combined to predict PPI sites. By integrating local contextual and global sequence features, DeepPPISP achieves the state-of-the-art performance, which is better than the other competing methods. In order to investigate if global sequence features are helpful in our deep learning model, we remove or change some components in DeepPPISP. Detailed analyses show that global sequence features play important roles in DeepPPISP.
