Few observers of Mexico and Brazil in the 1930s, or South Korea and Taiwan in the mid-1950s, would have predicted that these nations would become economic "miracles" several decades later. These ...newly industrializing countries (NICs) challenge much of our conventional wisdom about economic development and raise important questions about international competitiveness and export success in manufacturing industries. In this volume economists, sociologists, and political scientists seek to explain the growth of the NICs in Latin America and East Asia and to reformulate contemporary development theory through an in-depth analysis of these two dynamic regions. Currently, major biofuel crops are also food crops that demand fertile soils and good‐quality water. Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus, Asteraceae) produces high tonnage of tubers that are ...rich in sugars, mainly in the form of inulin. In this study, plants of the cultivar “White Fuseau” grown under five salinity levels were evaluated for tuber yield. Results indicated that this cultivar is moderately salt‐tolerant if the goal is tuber production. Hydraulic pressings of the tubers produced juice that contained 15% (wet weight) or 55% (dry weight) free sugars, with 70% of these in the form of inulin and the rest as fructose, sucrose, and glucose. Importantly, salinity did not affect the total free sugar or inulin content of the tubers. Tubers were composed of about 12% dry washed bagasse (wet weight) or 44% (dry matter basis) and bagasse retained such high quantities of free sugars after pressing that washing was required for complete sugar recovery. Chemical composition analysis of tuber bagasse suggested that it had low lignin content (11–13 wt%), and its structural sugar composition was similar to chicory root bagasse. Because of the high hemicellulose and pectin content of the bagasse, adding xylanase and pectinase to cellulase substantially improved sugar yields from enzymatic hydrolysis compared to at the same protein loading as cellulase alone. In addition to the high total sugar yield of tuber, these first findings on the sugar and lignin content and enzymatic hydrolysis of tuber bagasse can lead to low‐cost production of ethanol for transportation fuels.
The high free sugars and bagasse yields measured after hydraulic pressings of tubers of Jerusalem artichoke irrigated with low to high salinity water show Jerusalem artichoke to be very promising for biofuels production. The structural sugar composition of tuber bagasse was similar to that of chicory root bagasse. Application of a mixture of cellulase, xylanase, and pectinase proved to release more sugars by enzymatic hydrolysis of tuber bagasse than when cellulase alone was used at the same mass protein loading.
Fish in the South American genus Arapaima Müller, 1843 (hereafter referred to as arapaimas) have attracted interest for commercial aquaculture development thanks to their rapid growth rate and high ...market value. However, management agencies in the United States have expressed concerns about importing and culturing arapaimas due to records of non-native establishment in certain other countries where arapaimas were released or escaped from captivity. We used the Freshwater Fish Injurious Species Risk Assessment Model (FISRAM) to estimate the probability that arapaimas would be injurious (able to cause harm) to native ecosystems, humans, or the economy of the contiguous United States. Risk assessment model inputs were elicited from arapaima experts around the world. Model results were sensitive to the estimation of climate suitability for arapaimas within the contiguous United States, with predicted probability of injuriousness ranging from 0.784 down to 0.321 with different climate suitability inputs. Expert assessors predicted that competition and predation on native species would be the most likely mechanism of impact and expressed a high degree of uncertainty about potential for impacts from pathogens and parasites. We concluded that due to the cold sensitivity of these tropically adapted fish, establishment within the contiguous United States would be highly restricted geographically, limiting potential impacts if introduced outside climatically suitable areas. Existing regulations already mitigate risk of escape from aquaculture in areas where establishment is plausible, but further research into arapaima parasites and pathogens would help reduce uncertainties and suggest opportunities to enhance biosecurity measures if needed.
To examine the test-retest reliability and the validity of a voiding diary designed to assess the symptoms of frequency, urgency, and urge urinary incontinence (UI).Voiding diaries serve as the ...primary tool to assess symptoms of overactive bladder in clinical settings and in clinical trials of treatment for overactive bladder. Despite the widespread use of these instruments, few studies have documented their measurement properties or investigated the number of days required to assess symptoms accurately.
Study participants included 21 men and 133 women at least 20 years of age recruited from urogynecology and urology clinics. All had a history of urge incontinence or mixed incontinence with urge as the primary component. Participants completed a 7-day voiding diary on two occasions, separated by at least 1 week.
Men and women reported a daily average of approximately 10 micturitions, 7 occurrences of strong urge, and 2 episodes of urge urinary incontinence. The diary exhibited good to excellent reliability, with estimated intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranging from 0.81 to 0.86 for the symptoms of strong urge, diurnal and nocturnal micturitions, total incontinence, and urge incontinence episodes. Estimates did not differ appreciably between men and women. Moderate correlations with global questions on micturition frequency and UI episodes supported the validity of the diary. Diaries completed for 3 and 4 days were similar, with only slightly lower estimates of reliability (ICC 0.79 to 0.84).
The voiding diary completed for 7 days, following detailed instruction, is reliable and appears to be valid for documenting the change in symptoms of overactive bladder in men and women with predominantly urge incontinence. Because of comparable reliability and reduced patient burden, diaries of shorter duration may also be acceptable to assess the symptoms of overactive bladder, depending on the degree of precision required.
