Based on the composite fibers made from polyvinylchloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS), the composite fibers obtained were further crosslinked and sulphonated with 50% oleum to produce the acidic ...cation ion exchange fibers. The optimal technology of the fibers obtained were discussed, the structures of the fibers thus obtained were investigated by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometry, thermogravimetry analysis (TG), differential thermogravimetry analysis (DTG), and scaning electron microscope (SEM) etc. Their properties were measured using chemical titration, filament mightiness instrument, etc. The absorption kinetics and the main factors affecting absorption capacity on aniline were studied, and their regenerating properties were probed. The results indicated that the cation exchange fibers with better mechanical property and higher exchange capability were obtained. The fibers had bigger hydrophilicity, better ability of acid, and alkali corrosion resistance, so they had better practical application value. This type of ion exchange fibers had faster absorption property and better working stability to aniline and could be used repeatedly, so they were applied for treatment of waste water containing aniline with a promising prospect.
Aim: Pseudolaric acid B (PAB), a diterpene acid isolated from the root bark of Pseudolarix kaempferi Gordon, has shown to exert antitumor effects via inducing cell cycle arrest followed by apoptosis ...in several cancer cell lines. Here we reported that PAB induced a mitotic catastrophe in human lung cancer A549 cells, which resulted in senescence without apoptosis or necrosis. Methods: Three human lung cancer cell lines (A549, H460 and H1299 cells) were examined. Cell growth inhibition was assessed with MTT assay. Cell cycle distribution was determined using a flow cytometer. Cell nuclear morphology was observed under a fluorescence microscope. Senescent cells were detected using SA-β-Gal staining. Apoptotic and senescent protein expression was examined using Western blot analysis. The expression of p53 and p21 in the cells was downregulated by siRNAs. Results: Treatment with PAB (5-80 pmol/L) inhibited the growth of A549 cells in dose- and time-dependent manners. Prolonged treatment with PAB (20 pmol/L) caused G2/M arrest at day i followed by mitotic catastrophe from day 2, which eventually resulted in cell senescence between days 3 and 4 without cell death (apoptosis or necrosis). Knockdown of p53 expression with siRNA significantly suppressed PAB-induced senescence in A549 cells (p53 wild). Furthermore, PAB-induced senescence was also observed in human lung cancer H460 cells (p53 wild), but not in human lung cancer H1299 cells (p53 null). Conclusion: The anti-tumor action of PAB against human lung cancer A549 cells in vitro involves the induction of senescence through activation of the p53 pathway.
A one-way coupled spatiotemporally chaotic map lattice is used to construct cryptosystem. With the combinatorial applications of both chaotic computations and conventional algebraic operations, our ...system has optimal cryptographic properties much better than the separative applications of known chaotic and conventional methods. We have realized experiments to practice duplex voice secure communications in realistic Wired Public Switched Telephone Network by applying our chaotic system and the system of Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), respectively, for cryptography. Our system can work stably against strong channel noise when AES fails to work.
To investigate the potential clinical predictors associated with the recovery of renal function in recent-onset uremia in patients with lupus nephritis.
Factors possibly influencing the recovery of ...renal function in patients with lupus nephritis were examined in a 6 month retrospective cohort study. Records of a sample of 198 consecutive inpatients of recently diagnosed renal failure with lupus nephritis admitted to the University Hospital between 1991 and 2001 were examined. Complete records to assess followup were available for 162 (81.8%). The main outcome factor was recovery of renal function, which was defined as discontinuation of dialysis and over 50% reduction of serum creatinine 3 months after discontinuation of dialysis. Collection of clinical and laboratory data and outcome variables was conducted by 2 separate, blinded groups of clinical specialists with 2 structured abstracting forms.
After 6 months of followup, 96 patients (59.3%) recovered their renal function and 18 (11.1%) had died. After adjustment with Cox proportional hazards models, sex, renal dysfunction duration, renal size, anemia, level of serum phosphate, and intravenous cyclophosphamide (i.v. CYC) therapy were found to be significantly associated with recovery of renal function. There was significant association between i.v. CYC therapy and infections. However, in logistic regression analysis, neither CYC therapy nor infections were significantly associated with mortality, and only severe edema and lower serum albumin level were associated with mortality.
Male sex, postponing hospital admission after onset of renal failure, atrophic renal size, and high concentrations of serum phosphate were all predictors of poor recovery of renal function. i.v. CYC therapy at higher dose had a protective effect on the recovery of renal function.
A new measurement of the θ13 mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The ...antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of θ13 measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GWth reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as sin22θ13=0.083±0.018 in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain sin22θ13=0.089±0.008 as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.
To study the stomach role in exogenous oxalate absorption.
The kinetic variation of urinary oxalate excretion (mg/min) in 10 healthy adults and 8 patients who underwent total gastrectomy was ...investigated before and after an oral spinach oxalate load. The bioavailability of the oxalate load in the healthy adults was calculated and compared with that in the patients.
The oxalate content in the oral spinach load was 2567-2670 mg. The urinary oxalate excretion (mg/min) in the 10 healthy adults increased significantly 20 minutes after loading (this increase was compared against their basic oxalate excretion level of 0.0331 +/- 0.0203). Further observations after loading include: a first peak of oxalate excretion 40 minutes after loading; an oxalate excretion level double that of the basic level after 60 minutes (0.0732 +/- 0.0294) and a second peak appearing at 3 hours (P < 0.01). A "first peak" (0.063% +/- 0.062%) was not in any of the patients who underwent a total gastrectomy. Furthermore, a bioavailability of oxalate, which was 50% lower than that in the healthy subjects, appeared 60 minutes after loading (0.098% +/- 0.071%, P < 0.01).
The stomach is a powerful oxalate absorption organ under normal physiological conditions. Further investigation on the relationship between stomach dysfunction and urinary calcium oxalate formation is needed.
A highly diverse radiolarian fauna of Anisian age has been recovered from an 11 m continuous succession of siliceous rocks with tuffs and mudstones in the Changning-Menglian belt of southwestern ...Yunnan, China. Seventy-three radiolarian species and subspecies, among which, six new species, one new subspecies and 36 unidentified species, are included in the investigation. The 6 new species and 1 new subspecies are Triassocampe goricani, Triassocampe dumitricai, Triassocampe coronata inflata, Triassocampe relica, Archaeospongoprunum muyinense, Neopaurinella deweveri and Neopaurinella kozuri. Based on morphological comparison and stratigraphical range, some possible evolutionary relations are suggested. Four radiolarian zones, namely, Triassocampe deweveri Zone (late Anisian), Triassocampe coronata coronata Zone (middle Anisian), Triassocampe coronata inflata Zone (middle Anisian), and Triassocampe dumitricai Zone (early Anisian) are established. The Early Triassic radiolarian fauna in this area has a very low diversity and mainly consists of survivors of the Permian radiolarians. The recovery of the Triassic radiolarian fauna takes place in early Anisian. In this period, the multicyrtid nassellarians are moderately diverse and characterized by having a slender shell with weak constriction among segments; the spumellarian species are characterized by having needle-like main spines. In the middle and late Anisian, the shells of the multicyrtid nassellarians became strong with developed constrictions between segments, and both the spumellarians with needle-like spines and the spumellarians with three-bladed spines are diverse.
Reliability analysis for hydro power stations for (N+M) and 2N fault tolerant modes (FTM) and their comparison from the standpoint of control and maintenance have been carried out in this paper. It ...shows that the (N+M) FTM is superior to 2N FTM in reliability and economics in most cases. So, (N+M) FTM is recommended for large power stations, especially for multi-unit plants. A simple method to choose the number of standby controllers is developed by optimizing the (N+M) FTM. The ideas and results proposed in this paper can be used not only for governing systems in hydro power stations but also for other industrial systems.
Helicobacter pylori has been suggested to be the major cause of gastric malignancy. However, the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms of gastric tumorigenesis induced by H. pylori infection are yet ...to be elucidated. In the present study, the expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which has been suggested to promote angiogenesis in gastric cancer, were found to be elevated in H. pylori-infected MKN45 cells. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the expression of VEGF was modulated by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) pathway via regulation of the cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 pathway. It was also found that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and its receptor EP2/EP4 may mediate the upregulation of VEGF in gastric cells exposed to H. pylori. In combination, these results suggest that VEGF expression is regulated by the p38 MAPK COX‑2-PGE2-EP2/EP4 pathway in gastric cancer cells induced by H. pylori. This provides a theoretical basis for the investigation of the pathogenesis of H. pylori‑induced gastric cancer.
