We report single-crystal V51 NMR studies on volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2·2H2O, which is regarded as a quasi-two-dimensional frustrated magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ...interactions. In the 1/3 magnetization plateau above 28 T, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 indicates an excitation gap with a large effective g factor in the range of 4.6–5.9, pointing to magnon bound states. Below 26 T where the gap has closed, the NMR spectra indicate small internal fields with a Gaussian-like distribution, whereas 1/T1 shows a power-law-like temperature dependence in the paramagnetic state, which resembles a slowing down of spin fluctuations associated with magnetic order. We discuss the possibility of an exotic spin state caused by the condensation of magnon bound states below the magnetization plateau.
The aim of this study was to compare the safety of tooth extraction in patients receiving direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) or warfarin without cessation of their antithrombotic treatment. This ...prospective observational study included 367 patients undergoing tooth extraction (119 receiving DOACs and 248 receiving warfarin). All extractions in DOAC patients were performed 6–7h after taking DOACs in consideration of the half-life in blood under continued antithrombotic treatment. To examine the potential postoperative bleeding risk related to the time of extraction and the drug concentration of blood, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) in dabigatran and prothrombin time (PT) in rivaroxaban were measured three times after administration. A total of 390 tooth extractions were performed: 128 in the DOAC patients and 262 in warfarin patients. Postoperative bleeding occurred in four extractions (3.1%) in the DOAC group and in 23 (8.8%) in the warfarin group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (odds ratio: 2.362, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.819–6.815, p=0.112). APTT and PT prolongation in almost all cases decreased with time after taking the medicine. Our findings suggest that interruption of DOAC therapy is not necessary for tooth extraction if the procedure is performed at least 6h after the last dose.
Through imputation of genotypes, genome‐wide association study (GWAS) and genomic prediction (GP) using whole‐genome sequencing (WGS) data are cost‐efficient and feasible in aquaculture breeding ...schemes. The objective was to dissect the genetic architecture of growth traits under chronic heat stress in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and to assess the accuracy of GP based on imputed WGS and different preselected single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays. A total of 192 and 764 fish challenged to a heat stress experiment for 62 days were genotyped using a customized 1 K and 26 K SNP panels, respectively, and then, genotype imputation was performed from a low‐density chip to WGS using 102 parents (36 males and 66 females) as the reference population. Imputed WGS data were used to perform GWAS and test GP accuracy under different preselected SNP scenarios. Heritability was estimated for body weight (BW), body length (BL) and average daily gain (ADG). Estimates using imputed WGS data ranged from 0.33 ± 0.05 to 0.55 ± 0.05 for growth traits under chronic heat stress. GWAS revealed that the top five cumulatively SNPs explained a maximum of 0.94%, 0.86% and 0.51% of genetic variance for BW, BL and ADG, respectively. Some important functional candidate genes associated with growth‐related traits were found among the most important SNPs, including signal transducer and activator of transcription 5B and 3 (STAT5B and STAT3, respectively) and cytokine‐inducible SH2‐containing protein (CISH). WGS data resulted in a slight increase in prediction accuracy compared with pedigree‐based method, whereas preselected SNPs based on the top GWAS hits improved prediction accuracies, with values ranging from 1.2 to 13.3%. Our results support the evidence of the polygenic nature of growth traits when measured under heat stress. The accuracies of GP can be improved using preselected variants from GWAS, and the use of WGS marginally increases prediction accuracy.
We report the detection of Hα trails behind three new intermediate-mass irregular galaxies in the NW outskirts of the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 1656 (Coma). Hints that these galaxies possess ...an extended component were found in earlier, deeper Hα observations carried out with the Subaru telescope. However the lack of a simultaneous r-band exposure, together with the presence of strong stellar ghosts in the Subaru images, prevented us from quantifying the detections. We therefore devoted one full night of Hα observation to each of the three galaxies using the San Pedro Martir 2.1 m telescope. One-sided tails of Hα emission of 10–20 kpc projected size were detected, suggesting an ongoing ram pressure stripping event. We added these 3 new sources of extended ionized gas to the 12 previously found, NGC 4848, and NGC 4921 whose ram pressure stripping is certified by HI asymmetry. This brings the number sources with Hα trails to 17 gaseous tails out of 27 (63%) late-type galaxies (LTG) members of the Coma cluster with direct evidence of ram pressure stripping. The 27 LTG galaxies, among these the 17 with extended Hα tails, have kinematic properties that are different from the rest of the early-type galaxy population of the core of the Coma cluster, as they deviate in the phase-space diagram |ΔV|/σ versus r/R200.

Here we report on the results of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope photo-polarimetric campaign targeting the blazar S5 0716+71, organized in 2014 March to monitor the source simultaneously in
...BVRI
and near-IR filters. The campaign resulted in an unprecedented data set spanning ∼110 hr of nearly continuous, multiband observations, including two sets of densely sampled polarimetric data mainly in the
R
filter. During the campaign, the source displayed pronounced variability with peak-to-peak variations of about 30% and “bluer-when-brighter” spectral evolution, consisting of a day-timescale modulation with superimposed hour-long microflares characterized by ∼0.1 mag flux changes. We performed an in-depth search for quasi-periodicities in the source light curve; hints for the presence of oscillations on timescales of ∼3 and ∼5 hr do not represent highly significant departures from a pure red-noise power spectrum. We observed that, at a certain configuration of the optical polarization angle (PA) relative to the PA of the innermost radio jet in the source, changes in the polarization degree (PD) led the total flux variability by about 2 hr; meanwhile, when the relative configuration of the polarization and jet angles altered, no such lag could be noted. The microflaring events, when analyzed as separate pulse emission components, were found to be characterized by a very high PD (>30%) and PAs that differed substantially from the PA of the underlying background component, or from the radio jet positional angle. We discuss the results in the general context of blazar emission and energy dissipation models.
A polyelectrolyte complex system of chitosan-pectin nano- and microparticles was developed to encapsulate the hormone insulin. The aim of this work was to obtain small particles for oral insulin ...delivery without chemical crosslinkers based on natural and biodegradable polysaccharides. The nano- and microparticles were developed using chitosans (with different degrees of acetylation: 15.0% and 28.8%) and pectin solutions at various charge ratios (n⁺/n
given by the chitosan/pectin mass ratio) and total charge. Nano- and microparticles were characterized regarding particle size, zeta potential, production yield, encapsulation efficiency, stability in different media, transmission electron microscopy and cytotoxicity assays using Caco-2 cells. The insulin release was evaluated in vitro in simulated gastric and intestinal media. Small-sized particles (~240-~1900 nm) with a maximum production yield of ~34.0% were obtained. The highest encapsulation efficiency (~62.0%) of the system was observed at a charge ratio (n⁺/n
) 5.00. The system was stable in various media, particularly in simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis showed spherical shape particles when insulin was added to the system. In simulated intestinal fluid (pH 6.8), controlled insulin release occurred over 2 h. In vitro tests indicated that the proposed system presents potential as a drug delivery for oral administration of bioactive peptides.
Recent schizophrenia (SCZ) studies have reported an increased burden of de novo copy number variants (CNVs) and identified specific high-risk CNVs, although with variable phenotype expressivity. ...However, the pathogenesis of SCZ has not been fully elucidated. Using array comparative genomic hybridization, we performed a high-resolution genome-wide CNV analysis on a mainly (92%) Japanese population (1699 SCZ cases and 824 controls) and identified 7066 rare CNVs, 70.0% of which were small (<100 kb). Clinically significant CNVs were significantly more frequent in cases than in controls (odds ratio=3.04, P=9.3 × 10
, 9.0% of cases). We confirmed a significant association of X-chromosome aneuploidies with SCZ and identified 11 de novo CNVs (e.g., MBD5 deletion) in cases. In patients with clinically significant CNVs, 41.7% had a history of congenital/developmental phenotypes, and the rate of treatment resistance was significantly higher (odds ratio=2.79, P=0.0036). We found more severe clinical manifestations in patients with two clinically significant CNVs. Gene set analysis replicated previous findings (e.g., synapse, calcium signaling) and identified novel biological pathways including oxidative stress response, genomic integrity, kinase and small GTPase signaling. Furthermore, involvement of multiple SCZ candidate genes and biological pathways in the pathogenesis of SCZ was suggested in established SCZ-associated CNV loci. Our study shows the high genetic heterogeneity of SCZ and its clinical features and raises the possibility that genomic instability is involved in its pathogenesis, which may be related to the increased burden of de novo CNVs and variable expressivity of CNVs.
Nitrification, a key process in the global nitrogen cycle that generates nitrate through microbial activity, may enhance losses of fertilizer nitrogen by leaching and denitrification. Certain plants ...can suppress soil-nitrification by releasing inhibitors from roots, a phenomenon termed biological nitrification inhibition (BNI). Here, we report the discovery of an effective nitrification inhibitor in the root-exudates of the tropical forage grass Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle) Schweick. Named "brachialactone," this inhibitor is a recently discovered cyclic diterpene with a unique 5-8-5-membered ring system and a γ-lactone ring. It contributed 60-90% of the inhibitory activity released from the roots of this tropical grass. Unlike nitrapyrin (a synthetic nitrification inhibitor), which affects only the ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) pathway, brachialactone appears to block both AMO and hydroxylamine oxidoreductase enzymatic pathways in NITROSOMONAS: Release of this inhibitor is a regulated plant function, triggered and sustained by the availability of ammonium (NHFormula: see text) in the root environment. Brachialactone release is restricted to those roots that are directly exposed to NHFormula: see text. Within 3 years of establishment, Brachiaria pastures have suppressed soil nitrifier populations (determined as amoA genes; ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and ammonia-oxidizing archaea), along with nitrification and nitrous oxide emissions. These findings provide direct evidence for the existence and active regulation of a nitrification inhibitor (or inhibitors) release from tropical pasture root systems. Exploiting the BNI function could become a powerful strategy toward the development of low-nitrifying agronomic systems, benefiting both agriculture and the environment.
Electron-phonon-driven charge-density waves can in some circumstances allow electronic correlations to become predominant, driving a system into a Mott insulating state. New insight into both the ...Mott state and preceding charge-density wave may result from observations of the coupled dynamics of their underlying degrees of freedom. Here, tunneling injection of single electrons into the upper Hubbard band of the Mott charge-density-wave material1T−TaS2reveals extraordinarily narrow electronic excitations which couple to amplitude mode phonons associated with the charge-density wave’s periodic lattice distortion. This gives a vivid microscopic view of the interplay between excitations of the Mott state and the lattice dynamics of its charge-density wave precursor.
