Background and Aims
Aristolochic acid (AA) exposure has been statistically associated with human liver cancers. However, direct evidence of AA exposure–induced liver cancer is absent. This study aims ...to establish a direct causal relationship between AA exposure and liver cancers based on a mouse model and then explores the AA‐mediated genomic alterations that could be implicated in human cancers with AA‐associated mutational signature.
Approach and Results
We subjected mice, including phosphatase and tensin homolog (Pten)‐deficient ones, to aristolochic acid I (AAI) alone or a combination of AAI and CCl4. Significantly, AAI exposure induced mouse liver cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and combined HCC and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, in a dose‐dependent manner. Moreover, AAI exposure also enhanced tumorigenesis in these CCl4‐treated or Pten‐deficient mice. AAI led to DNA damage and AAI‐DNA adduct that could initiate liver cancers through characteristic adenine‐to‐thymine transversions, as indicated by comprehensive genomic analysis, which revealed recurrent mutations in Harvey rat sarcoma virus oncogene. Interestingly, an AA‐associated mutational signature was mainly implicated in human liver cancers, especially from China. Moreover, we detected the AAI‐DNA adduct in 25.8% (16/62) of paratumor liver tissues from randomly selected Chinese patients with HCC. Furthermore, based on phylogenetic analysis, the characteristic mutations were found in the initiating malignant clones in the AA‐implicated mouse and human liver cancers where the mutations of tumor protein p53 and Janus kinase 1 were prone to be significantly enriched in the AA‐affected human tumors.
Conclusions
This study provides evidence for AA‐induced liver cancer with the featured mutational processes during malignant clonal evolution, laying a solid foundation for the prevention and diagnosis of AA‐associated human cancers, especially liver cancers.

Mycotoxin contamination in food products may cause serious health hazards and economic losses. The effective control and accurate detection of mycotoxins have become a global concern. Even though a ...variety of methods have been developed for mycotoxin detection, most conventional methods suffer from complicated operation procedures, low sensitivity, high cost, and long assay time. Therefore, the development of simple and sensitive methods for mycotoxin assay is highly needed. The introduction of nucleic acid signal amplification technology (NASAT) into aptasensors significantly improves the sensitivity and facilitates the detection of mycotoxins. Herein, we give a comprehensive review of the recent advances in NASAT-based aptasensors for assaying mycotoxins and summarize the principles, features, and applications of NASAT-based aptasensors. Moreover, we highlight the challenges and prospects in the field, including the simultaneous detection of multiple mycotoxins and the development of portable devices for field detection.
Tea is widely consumed all over the world. Generally, tea is divided into six categories: White, green, yellow, oolong, black, and dark teas, based on the fermentation degree. Tea contains abundant ...phytochemicals, such as polyphenols, pigments, polysaccharides, alkaloids, free amino acids, and saponins. However, the bioavailability of tea phytochemicals is relatively low. Thus, some novel technologies like nanotechnology have been developed to improve the bioavailability of tea bioactive components and consequently enhance the bioactivity. So far, many studies have demonstrated that tea shows various health functions, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immuno-regulatory, anticancer, cardiovascular-protective, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, and hepato-protective effects. Moreover, it is also considered that drinking tea is safe to humans, since reports about the severe adverse effects of tea consumption are rare. In order to provide a better understanding of tea and its health potential, this review summarizes and discusses recent literature on the bioactive components, bioavailability, health functions, and safety issues of tea, with special attention paid to the related molecular mechanisms of tea health functions.

This article reviews the progress made in CO2 capture, storage, and utilization in Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). New concepts such as adsorption using dry regenerable solid sorbents as well as functional ionic liquids (ILs) for CO2 capture are thoroughly discussed. Carbon sequestration, such as geological sequestration, mineral carbonation and ocean storage are also covered. The utilization of CO2 as a raw material in the synthesis of chemicals and liquid energy carriers which offers a way to mitigate the increasing CO2 buildup is introduced.

Furthermore, enterprise innovation and enterprise-specialized production play a mediating role in the impact of enterprise digital transformation on capacity utilization. Based on these baseline findings, heterogenous analysis reveals that the impact of digital transformation on capacity utilization is significant for firms with larger capital scales or poor governance and manufacturing abilities. However, it is less important for enterprises with small- and medium-sized capital scales or with more standardized governance, as well as non-manufacturing (service) enterprises.
We demonstrate that target-activated cascade transcription amplification lights up RNA aptamers for label-free detection of metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity with zero background. This assay ...exhibits good specificity and high sensitivity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.6 fM. Moreover, it can analyze enzyme kinetic parameters, screen inhibitors, and accurately quantify MMP-2 in cancer cells and clinical serums.
Development of special organic materials that are able to absorb light energy in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) is significantly important for treating deep-tissue-buried diseases or ...supplying power to implantable electronic devices. Herein, a narrow bandgap donor–acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymer with thiophene-fused benzodifurandione-based oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) (TBDOPV) as acceptor part and 2,2′-bithiophene (DT) as donor part was developed and exploited as a photothermal conversion material with high extinction coefficient and robust photostability in the NIR-II window. According to transient absorption analysis results, the photothermal conversion ability of this polymer is attributed to the fast internal conversion (IC) process. The high photothermal conversion efficiency makes this polymer a promising NIR-II adsorbing antenna to remotely actuate thermo-dependent devices, e.g., high-performance photothermal–electrical and photothermal–mechanical converters.
Metabolic diseases are serious threats to public health and related to gut microbiota. Probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics (PPSP) are powerful regulators of gut microbiota, thus ...possessing prospects for preventing metabolic diseases. Therefore, the effects and mechanisms of PPSP on metabolic diseases targeting gut microbiota are worth discussing and clarifying. Generally, PPSP benefit metabolic diseases management, especially obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The underlying gut microbial-related mechanisms are mainly the modulation of gut microbiota composition, regulation of gut microbial metabolites, and improvement of intestinal barrier function. Moreover, clinical trials showed the benefits of PPSP on patients with metabolic diseases, while the clinical strategies for gestational diabetes mellitus, optimal formula of synbiotics and health benefits of postbiotics need further study. This review fully summarizes the relationship between probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, and metabolic diseases, presents promising results and the one in dispute, and especially attention is paid to illustrates potential mechanisms and clinical effects, which could contribute to the next research and development of PPSP.
Tea is a traditional and popular beverage worldwide, and the consumption of tea has been demonstrated to possess many health benefits, such as cardiovascular protection, anti-obesity, anti-diabetes, ...and anticancer. Epidemiological studies have shown that the consumption of tea is inversely associated with the risk of several cancers. In addition, experimental studies have revealed that the anticancer actions of tea are mainly attributed to tea polyphenols, such as epigallocatechin-3-gallate and theaflavins. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that the possible anticancer mechanisms are the inhibition on proliferation, anti-angiogenesis, induction of apoptosis, suppression on metastasis, inhibition on cancer stem cells, and modulation on gut microbiota. Its synergetic anticancer effects with drugs or other compounds could promote anticancer therapies. Furthermore, clinical trials have elucidated that intervention of tea phytochemicals is effective in the prevention of several cancers. This paper is an updated review for the prevention and management of cancers by tea based on the findings from epidemiological, experimental and clinical studies, and special attention is paid on the mechanisms of action.
