The mechanism of superconductivity in cuprates remains one of the big challenges of condensed matter physics. High-Tc
cuprates crystallize into a layered perovskite structure featuring copper oxygen ...octahedral coordination. Due to the Jahn Teller effect in combination with the strong static Coulomb interaction, the octahedra in high-Tc
cuprates are elongated along the c axis, leading to a 3dx²-y² orbital at the top of the band structure wherein the doped holes reside. This scenario gives rise to 2D characteristics in high-Tc
cuprates that favor d-wave pairing symmetry. Here, we report superconductivity in a cuprate Ba₂CuO4-y, wherein the local octahedron is in a very exceptional compressed version. The Ba₂CuO4-y compound was synthesized at high pressure at high temperatures and shows bulk superconductivity with critical temperature (Tc
) above 70 K at ambient conditions. This superconducting transition temperature is more than 30 K higher than the Tc
for the isostructural counterparts based on classical La₂CuO₄. X-ray absorption measurements indicate the heavily doped nature of the Ba₂CuO4-y superconductor. In compressed octahedron, the 3d3z²-r² orbital will be lifted above the 3dx²-y² orbital, leading to significant 3D nature in addition to the conventional 3dx²-y² orbital. This work sheds important light on advancing our comprehensive understanding of the superconducting mechanism of high Tc
in cuprate materials.

(at.%) chemically complex alloy, resulting from the controllable sluggish lattice diffusion (SLD) effect. Our diffusion kinetic simulations reveal that the Co element leads to a significant reduction in the interdiffusion coefficients of all the main elements, especially for the Al element, with a maximum of up to 5 orders of magnitude. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we further unveil the incompressibility of Al induced by the increased concentration of Co plays a critical role in controlling the SLD effect. These findings are useful for providing advances in the design of novel structural alloys with extraordinary property-microstructure stability combinations for structural applications.
We propose and experimentally realize a new kind of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in a class of systems constructed by coupling multiple identical one-dimensional chains, each with inversion ...symmetry. In such systems, a specific separation of the Hilbert space into a topological and a nontopological subspace exists. Bulk-boundary correspondence in the topological subspace guarantees the existence of a localized interface state which can lie in the continuum of extended states in the nontopological subspace, forming a BIC. Such a topological BIC is observed experimentally in a system consisting of coupled acoustic resonators.

Phase-change random-access memory (PCRAM) is one of the leading candidates for next-generation data-storage devices, but the trade-off between crystallization (writing) speed and amorphous-phase ...stability (data retention) presents a key challenge. We control the crystallization kinetics of a phase-change material by applying a constant low voltage via prestructural ordering (incubation) effects. A crystallization speed of 500 picoseconds was achieved, as well as high-speed reversible switching using 500-picosecond pulses. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal the phase-change kinetics in PCRAM devices and the structural origin of the incubation-assisted increase in crystallization speed. This paves the way for achieving a broadly applicable memory device, capable of nonvolatile operations beyond gigahertz data-transfer rates.
By using the k times p method, we propose a first-principles theory to study the linear dispersions in phononic and photonic crystals. The theory reveals that only those linear dispersions created by ...doubly degenerate states can be described by a reduced Hamiltonian that can be mapped into the Dirac Hamiltonian and possess a Berry phase of -pi. Linear dispersions created by triply degenerate states cannot be mapped into the Dirac Hamiltonian and carry no Berry phase, and, therefore should be called Dirac-like cones. Our theory is capable of predicting accurately the linear slopes of Dirac and Dirac-like cones at various symmetry points in a Brillouin zone, independent of frequency and lattice structure.
The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors challenges the existing paradigm of high-temperature superconductivity. Owing to their unusual multi-orbital band structure, magnetism and electron ...correlation, theories propose a unique sign-reversed s-wave pairing state, with the order parameter changing sign between the electron and hole Fermi pockets. However, because of the complex Fermi surface topology and materials-related issues, the predicted sign reversal remains unconfirmed. Here we report a new phase-sensitive technique for probing unconventional pairing symmetry in the polycrystalline iron pnictides. Through the observation of both integer and half-integer flux-quantum transitions in composite niobium-iron pnictide loops, we provide the first phase-sensitive evidence of the sign change of the order parameter in NdFeAsO0.88F0.12, lending strong support for microscopic models predicting unconventional s-wave pairing symmetry. These findings have important implications on the mechanism of iron pnictide superconductivity, and lay the groundwork for future studies of new physics arising from the exotic order in the FeAs-based superconductors.
Breast cancer bone micrometastases can remain asymptomatic for years before progressing into overt lesions. The biology of this process, including the microenvironment niche and supporting pathways, ...is unclear. We find that bone micrometastases predominantly reside in a niche that exhibits features of osteogenesis. Niche interactions are mediated by heterotypic adherens junctions (hAJs) involving cancer-derived E-cadherin and osteogenic N-cadherin, the disruption of which abolishes niche-conferred advantages. We elucidate that hAJ activates the mTOR pathway in cancer cells, which drives the progression from single cells to micrometastases. Human data set analyses support the roles of AJ and the mTOR pathway in bone colonization. Our study illuminates the initiation of bone colonization, and provides potential therapeutic targets to block progression toward osteolytic metastases.

Acute ischemic stroke is recognized as a common cerebral vascular disease in aging people. Accurate diagnosis and timely treatment can effectively improve the blood supply of the ischemic area and ...reduce the risk of disability or even death. Understanding the location and size of infarcts plays a critical role in the diagnosis decision. However, manual localization and quantification of stroke lesions are laborious and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose a novel automatic method to segment acute ischemic stroke from diffusion weighted images (DWIs) using deep 3-D convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our method can efficiently utilize 3-D contextual information and automatically learn very discriminative features in an end-to-end and data-driven way. To relieve the difficulty of training very deep 3-D CNN, we equip our network with dense connectivity to enable the unimpeded propagation of information and gradients throughout the network. We train our model with Dice objective function to combat the severe class imbalance problem in data. A DWI data set containing 242 subjects (90 for training, 62 for validation, and 90 for testing) with various types of acute ischemic stroke was constructed to evaluate our method. Our model achieved high performance on various metrics (Dice similarity coefficient: 79.13%, lesionwise precision: 92.67%, and lesionwise F1 score: 89.25%), outperforming the other state-of-the-art CNN methods by a large margin. We also evaluated the model on ISLES2015-SSIS data set and achieved very competitive performance, which further demonstrated its generalization capacity. The proposed method is fast and accurate, demonstrating a good potential in clinical routines.
Based on the concept of complementary media, we propose an invisibility cloak operating at a finite frequency that can cloak an object with a prespecified shape and size within a certain distance ...outside the shell. The cloak is comprised of a dielectric core and an "antiobject" embedded inside a negative index shell. The cloaked object is not blinded by the cloaking shell since it lies outside the cloak. Full-wave simulations in two dimensions have been performed to verify the cloaking effect.
