Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a unique and significant photophysical phenomenon that differs greatly from the commonly acknowledged aggregation-caused emission quenching observed for many ...π-conjugated planar chromophores. The mechanistic decipherment of the AIE phenomenon is of high importance for the advance of new AIE systems and exploitation of their potential applications. Propeller-like 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylsiloles are archetypal AIE-active luminogens, and have been adopted as a core part in the design of numerous luminescent materials with diverse functionalities. In this review article, we elucidate the impacts of substituents on the AIE activity and shed light on the structure-property relationship of siloles, with the aim of promoting the judicious design of AIE-active functional materials in the future. Recent representative advances of new silole-based functional materials and their potential applications are reviewed as well.
Recent advances in the structure-property relationship decipherment and luminescent functional materials development of AIE-active siloles are reviewed.
As promising luminescent materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials are booming vigorously in recent years, but robust blue ones still ...remain challenging. Herein, we report three highly efficient blue and deep-blue delayed fluorescence materials comprised of a weak electron acceptor chromeno3,2-ccarbazol-8(5H)-one with a rigid polycyclic structure and a weak electron donor spiroacridine-9,9'-xanthene. They hold distinguished merits of excellent photoluminescence quantum yields (99%), ultrahigh horizontal transition dipole ratios (93.6%), and fast radiative transition and reverse intersystem crossing, which furnish superb blue and deep-blue electroluminescence with Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinates (CIE
) of (0.14, 0.18) and (0.14, 0.15) and record-beating external quantum efficiencies (η
s) of 43.4% and 41.3%, respectively. Their efficiency roll-offs are successfully reduced by suppressing triplet-triplet and singlet-singlet annihilations. Moreover, high-performance deep-blue and green hyperfluorescence OLEDs are achieved by utilizing these materials as sensitizers for multi-resonance delayed fluorescence dopants, providing state-of-the-art η
s of 32.5% (CIE
= 0.14, 0.10) and 37.6% (CIE
= 0.32, 0.64), respectively, as well as greatly advanced operational lifetimes. These splendid results can surely inspire the development of blue and deep-blue luminescent materials and devices.
Organic emitters with persistent phosphorescence have shown potential application in optoelectronic devices. However, rational design and phosphorescence tuning are still challenging. Here, a series ...of metal-free luminophores without heavy atoms and carbonyl groups from commercial/lab-synthesized carbazole and benzene were synthesized to realize tunable molecular emission from fluorescence to phosphorescence by simply substituent variation. All the molecules emit blue fluorescence in both solution and solid state. Upon removal of excitation source, the fluorinated luminophores show obvious phosphorescence. The lab-synthesized carbazole based molecules exhibit a huge lifetime difference to the commercially purchased ones due to the existence of isomer in the latter samples. The small energy gap between singlet and triplet state and low reorganization energy help enhance intersystem crossing to contribute to a more competitive radiative process from triplet to ground state. Blue and white organic light-emitting devices are fabricated by using fluorinated luminophore as emitting layer.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is considered a pioneering and effective modality for cancer treatment, but it is still facing challenges of hypoxic tumors. Recently, Type I PDT, as an effective strategy ...to address this issue, has drawn considerable attention. Few reports are available on the capability for Type I reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation of purely organic photosensitizers (PSs). Herein, we report two new Type I PSs,
α
-TPA-PIO and
β
-TPA-PIO, from phosphindole oxide-based isomers with efficient Type I ROS generation abilities. A detailed study on photophysical and photochemical mechanisms is conducted to shed light on the molecular design of PSs based on the Type I mechanism. The
in vitro
results demonstrate that these two PSs can selectively accumulate in a neutral lipid region, particularly in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), of cells and efficiently induce ER-stress mediated apoptosis and autophagy in PDT.
In vivo
models indicate that
β
-TPA-PIO successfully achieves remarkable tumor ablation. The ROS-based ER stress triggered by
β
-TPA-PIO-mediated PDT has high potential as a precursor of the immunostimulatory effect for immunotherapy. This work presents a comprehensive protocol for Type I-based purely organic PSs and highlights the significance of considering the working mechanism in the design of PSs for the optimization of cancer treatment protocols.
Phosphindole oxide-based photosensitizers with Type I reactive oxygen species generation ability are developed and used for endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated photodynamic therapy of tumors.
Abstract
Improving power efficiency (
PE
) and reducing roll-off are of significant importance for the commercialization of white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) in consideration of energy ...conservation. Herein, record-beating
PE
of 130.7 lm W
−1
and outstanding external quantum efficiency (
EQE
) of 31.1% are achieved in all-fluorescence two-color WOLEDs based on a simple sandwich configuration of emitting layer consisting of sky-blue and orange delayed fluorescence materials. By introducing a red fluorescence dopant, all-fluorescence three-color WOLEDs with high color rendering index are constructed based on an interlayer sensitization configuration, furnishing ultrahigh
PE
of 110.7 lm W
−1
and
EQE
of 30.8%. More importantly, both two-color and three-color WOLEDs maintain excellent
PE
s at operating luminance with smaller roll-offs than the reported state-of-the-art WOLEDs, and further device optimization realizes outstanding comprehensive performances of low driving voltages, large luminance, high
PE
s and long operational lifetimes. The underlying mechanisms of the impressive device performances are elucidated by host-tuning effect and electron-trapping effect, providing useful guidance for the development of energy-conserving all-fluorescence WOLEDs.
Multimodal therapy is attracting increasing attention to improve tumor treatment efficacy, but generally requires various complicated ingredients combined within one theranostic system to achieve ...multiple functions. Herein, a multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform based on a single aggregation‐induced‐emission luminogen (AIEgen), DDTB, is designed to integrate near‐infrared (NIR) fluorescence, photothermal, photodynamic, and immunological effects. Intravenously injected AIEgen‐based nanoparticles can efficiently accumulate in tumors with NIR fluorescence to provide preoperative diagnosis. Most of the tumors are excised under intraoperative fluorescence navigation, whereafter, some microscopic residual tumors are completely ablated by photodynamic and photothermal therapies for maximally killing the tumor cells and tissues. Up to 90% of the survival rate can be achieved by this synergistic image‐guided surgery and photodynamic and photothermal therapies. Importantly, the nanoparticles‐mediated photothermal/photodynamic therapy plus programmed death‐ligand 1 antibody significantly induce tumor elimination by enhancing the effect of immunotherapy. This theranostic strategy on the basis of a single AIEgen significantly improves the survival of cancer mice with maximized therapeutic outcomes, and holds great promise for clinical cancer treatment.
Integrated surgery and phototheranostics employing nanoparticles based on a near‐infrared aggregation‐induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) for image‐guided synergistic tumor therapy are explored to overcome respective limitations and realize maximized therapeutic outcomes and minimized recurrences. Moreover, the combined treatment of AIEgen‐nanoparticle‐mediated phototheranostics and programmed death‐ligand 1 antibody significantly induces tumor elimination by enhancing the effect of immunotherapy.
Sequence-controlled polymers, including biopolymers such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, have attracted much attention recently because of their sequence-dependent functionalities. The development of an ...efficient synthetic approach for non-natural sequence-controlled polymers is hence of great importance. Multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) as a powerful and popular synthetic approach for functional polymers with great structural diversity have been demonstrated to be a promising tool for the synthesis of sequence-controlled polymers. In this work, we developed a facile metal-free one-pot multicomponent tandem polymerization (MCTP) of activated internal alkynes, aromatic diamines, and formaldehyde to successfully synthesize structural-regulated and sequence-controlled polyheterocycles with high molecular weights (up to 69 800 g/mol) in high yields (up to 99%). Through such MCTP, polymers with the in situ generated multisubstituted tetrahydropyrimidines or dihydropyrrolones in the backbone and inherent luminescence can be easily obtained with high atom economy and environmental benefit, which is inaccessible by other synthetic approaches.
Sulfur-containing polymers have been widely studied because of their high refractivity and low dispersion, but the efficient synthetic approach of them is quite limited. In this work, we use the ...abundantly existed elemental sulfur as monomer to prepare polythioamide directly and efficiently through a facile multicomponent polymerization (MCP) of aromatic diynes, sulfur, and aliphatic diamines. This MCP can proceed smoothly in a catalyst-free manner with high atom utilization to afford polythioamide with well-defined structure, high molecular weight, and high yield. It demonstrates a convenient approach to convert elemental sulfur into functional polythioamide. Fluorescence is observed from the polythioamide, despite the absence of typical fluorophores, owing to the “heterodox clusters” composed of a large number of lone-pair-containing electron-rich heteroatoms. The emission maxima and efficiencies of the polymers depend on the formation of molecular aggregates through intrachain and intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding and n → π* interaction between thioamides. This polymerization is anticipated to accelerate the development of efficient and economic MCPs toward functional polymer materials.
During the past two decades, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have been intensively exploited for biological and biomedical applications. Although a series of investigations have ...been performed in non-primate animal models, there is few pilot studies in non-human primate animal models, strongly hindering the clinical translation of AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Herein, we present a systemic and multifaceted demonstration of an optical imaging-guided surgical operation via AIEgens from small animals (e.g., mice and rabbits) to rhesus macaque, the typical non-human primate animal model. Specifically, the folic conjugated-AIE luminogen (folic-AIEgen) generates strong and stable fluorescence for the detection and surgical excision of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs). Moreover, with the superior tumor/normal tissue ratio and rapid tumor accumulation, folic-AIEgen successfully images and guides the precise resection of invisible cancerous metastases. Taken together, the presented strategies of folic-AIEgen based fluorescence intraoperative imaging and visualization-guided surgery show potential for clinical applications.
Molecular potentiometers that can indicate displacement-conductance relationship, and predict and control molecular conductance are of significant importance but rarely developed. Herein, ...single-molecule potentiometers are designed based on ortho-pentaphenylene. The ortho-pentaphenylene derivatives with anchoring groups adopt multiple folded conformers and undergo conformational interconversion in solutions. Solvent-sensitive multiple conductance originating from different conformers is recorded by scanning tunneling microscopy break junction technique. These pseudo-elastic folded molecules can be stretched and compressed by mechanical force along with a variable conductance by up to two orders of magnitude, providing an impressively higher switching factor (114) than the reported values (ca. 1~25). The multichannel conductance governed by through-space and through-bond conducting pathways is rationalized as the charge transport mechanism for the folded ortho-pentaphenylene derivatives. These findings shed light on exploring robust single-molecule potentiometers based on helical structures, and are conducive to fundamental understanding of charge transport in higher-order helical molecules.
