Based on climate extreme indices calculated from a high-resolution daily observational dataset in China during 1961–2005, the performance of 12 climate models from phase 6 of the Coupled Model ...Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), and 30 models from phase 5 of CMIP (CMIP5), are assessed in terms of spatial distribution and interannual variability. The CMIP6 multi-model ensemble mean (CMIP6-MME) can simulate well the spatial pattern of annual mean temperature, maximum daily maximum temperature, and minimum daily minimum temperature. However, CMIP6-MME has difficulties in reproducing cold nights and warm days, and has large cold biases over the Tibetan Plateau. Its performance in simulating extreme precipitation indices is generally lower than in simulating temperature indices. Compared to CMIP5, CMIP6 models show improvements in the simulation of climate indices over China. This is particularly true for precipitation indices for both the climatological pattern and the interannual variation, except for the consecutive dry days. The areal-mean bias for total precipitation has been reduced from 127% (CMIP5-MME) to 79% (CMIP6-MME). The most striking feature is that the dry biases in southern China, very persistent and general in CMIP5-MME, are largely reduced in CMIP6-MME. Stronger ascent together with more abundant moisture can explain this reduction in dry biases. Wet biases for total precipitation, heavy precipitation, and precipitation intensity in the eastern Tibetan Plateau are still present in CMIP6-MME, but smaller, compared to CMIP5-MME.
Integrating results from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) and gene expression studies through transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) has the potential to shed light on the causal ...molecular mechanisms underlying disease etiology. Here, we present a probabilistic Mendelian randomization (MR) method, PMR-Egger, for TWAS applications. PMR-Egger relies on a MR likelihood framework that unifies many existing TWAS and MR methods, accommodates multiple correlated instruments, tests the causal effect of gene on trait in the presence of horizontal pleiotropy, and is scalable to hundreds of thousands of individuals. In simulations, PMR-Egger provides calibrated type I error control for causal effect testing in the presence of horizontal pleiotropic effects, is reasonably robust under various types of model misspecifications, is more powerful than existing TWAS/MR approaches, and can directly test for horizontal pleiotropy. We illustrate the benefits of PMR-Egger in applications to 39 diseases and complex traits obtained from three GWASs including the UK Biobank.
This study examines the improvement in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase Six (CMIP6) models against the predecessor CMIP5 in simulating mean and extreme precipitation over the East Africa ...region. The study compares the climatology of the precipitation indices simulated by the CMIP models with the CHIRPS data set using robust statistical techniques for 1981–2005. The results display the varying performance of the general circulation models (GCMs) in the simulation of annual and seasonal precipitation climatology over the study domain. CMIP6 multi‐model ensemble mean (hereafter MME) shows improved performance in the local annual mean cycle simulation with a better representation of the rainfall within the two peaks, especially the MAM rainfall relative to their predecessor. Moreover, simulation of extreme indices is well captured in CMIP6 models relative to CMIP5. The CMIP6‐MME performed better than the CMIP5‐MME with lesser biases in simulating Simple Daily Intensity Index (SDII), consecutive dry days (CDD), and very heavy precipitation days >20 mm (R20mm) over East Africa. Remarkably, most CMIP6 models are unable to simulate extremely wet days (R95p). Some CMIP6 models (e.g., NorESM2‐MM and CNRM‐CM6‐1) depict robust performance in reproducing the observed indices across all analyses. OND season shows wet biases for some indices (i.e., R95p, PRCPTOT), except for SDII, CDD, and R20mm in CMIP6 models. Consistent with other studies, the mean ensemble performance for both CMIP5/6 shows better performance as compared with individual models due to the cancellation of some systematic errors in the individual models. Generally, CMIP6 depicts improved performance in the simulation of MAM rainfall compared with CMIP5 models. However, the new model generation is still marred by uncertainty, thereby depicting unsatisfactory performance over the East Africa domain. This calls for further investigation into the sources of persistent systematic biases and a methodology for identifying individual models with robust features that can accurately simulate observed patterns for future usage.

In GWAS studies, SNP heritability measures the proportion of phenotypic variance explained by all measured SNPs. Accurate estimation of SNP heritability can help us better understand ...the degree to which measured genetic variants influence phenotypes. Over the last decade, a variety of statistical methods and software tools have been developed for SNP heritability estimation with different data types including genotype array data, imputed genotype data, whole-genome sequencing data, RNA sequencing data, and bisulfite sequencing data. However, a thorough technical review of these methods, especially from a statistical and computational viewpoint, is currently missing. To fill this knowledge gap, we present a comprehensive review on a broad category of recently developed and commonly used SNP heritability estimation methods. We focus on their modeling assumptions; their interconnected relationships; their applicability to quantitative, binary and count phenotypes; their use of individual level data versus summary statistics, as well as their utility for SNP heritability partitioning. We hope that this review will serve as a useful reference for both methodologists who develop heritability estimation methods and practitioners who perform heritability analysis.
Damaged skin cannot prevent harmful bacteria from invading tissues, causing infected wounds and even serious tissue damage. Traditional treatments can not only kill pathogenic bacteria, but also ...suppress the growth of beneficial bacteria, thus destroying the balance of the damaged skin microbial ecosystem. Here, a living bacterial hydrogel scaffold is reported that accelerates infected wound healing through beneficial bacteria secreting antibacterial substances. Lactobacillus reuteri, a common probiotic, is encapsulated in hydrogel microspheres by emulsion polymerization and further immobilized in a hydrogel network by covalent cross‐linking of methacrylate‐modified hyaluronic acid. Owing to light‐initiated crosslinking, the hydrogel dressing can be generated in situ at the wound site. This hydrogel scaffold not only protects bacteria from immune system attack, but also prevents bacteria from escaping into the local environment, thus avoiding potential threats. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments show that it has excellent ability against harmful bacteria and anti‐inflammatory capabilities, promoting infected wound closure and new tissue regeneration. This work may open up new avenues for the application of living bacteria in the clinical management of infected wounds.

The 1-(3-aminopropyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide (APMImBr) functionalized graphene oxide (APMImBr-GO) and 1-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (MImTfO) are prepared and used as fillers and proton carrier in the preparation of high temperature hybrid proton exchange membranes (PEMs), respectively. The PEMs are obtained via photo-initiated polymerization of a mixture containing polymerizable oil (styrene/acrylonitrile and divinylbenzene), protic ionic liquid (PIL, MImTfO), and different content of APMImBr-GO. The resultant membranes show good thermal stability and excellent mechanical properties. Incorporation of proper amount of APMImBr-GO significantly increases the proton conductivity of the hybrid membranes, and the membranes with 1.0 wt% APMImBr-GO shows the highest conductivity (up to 1.48 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 160 °C). Compared with the plain membrane without APMImBr-GO, the hybrid membranes with APMImBr-GO show much better PIL retention ability. These properties make this type of PIL-based hybrid membranes suitable for the application of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

The purpose of this work was to assess population vulnerability to heat-related health risks and its relationship with urbanization levels to provide essential information for the future development and policy-making for climate change adaptation. We constructed a heat vulnerability index (HVI), quantified the population heat vulnerability in each county across China by a principal component analysis (PCA) of multiple factors, and assessed urbanization levels in each county using multisource data. Then, the HVI was validated using the heat-attributable fraction (heat-AF) of nonaccidental mortality based on death monitoring data and meteorological data from 95 counties across China. The results showed that our HVI was significantly positively associated with the heat AF of nonaccidental mortality. A negative correlation was observed between the urbanization level and the HVI. The HVI was generally higher in less urbanized western China and lower in the more urbanized eastern regions. The baseline mortality occupies the top position in the importance ranking of the heat-vulnerability indicators at all three urbanization levels, but the other indicators, including the aging rate, agricultural population rate, education, ethnic structure, economic status, air conditioner ownership rate, and number of hospitals, ranked differently among different urbanization levels. This finding indicates that to reduce population heat vulnerability, the most important approach is to improve the health status of the whole population and reduce baseline mortality; additionally, regional-specific measures and emphasis should be adjusted reasonably along with the process of urbanization according to the characteristics and key factors of local heat vulnerability.
Climate change has made disastrous heatwaves more frequent. Heatwave-related health impacts are much more devastating for more intense heatwaves. In the summer of 2017, exceptional heatwaves occurred ...in many regions, including China. This study aims to evaluate the cardiovascular mortality risk associated with the 2017 exceptional heatwaves and compare the mortality risk of the severe heatwaves with those in other years. Using daily data for a spectrum of cardiovascular mortality and temperature for 102 Chinese counties (2014–2017), we estimated the association between heatwave and mortality by generalized linear mixed-effects models. Compared with matched non-heatwave days, mortality risks on heatwaves days in 2017 increased 27.8% (95% CI, 14.8–42.3%), 26.7% (8.0–48.5%), 30.1% (10.2–53.7%), 27.3% (1.4–59.9%), 32.2% (3.4–68.4%), and 25.2% (1.0–57.7%) for total circulatory diseases, cerebrovascular disease, ischemic heart disease (IHD), acute IHD, chronic IHD, and myocardial infarction. The 2017 exceptional heatwaves impacted ischemic heart disease mortality and myocardial infarction mortality more than heatwaves in 2014–2016. Here we show that the severe heatwaves in 2017 posed catastrophic death threats for those under-studied cardiovascular diseases.

Developing lightweight and broadband microwave absorbers for dealing with serious electromagnetic radiation pollution is a great challenge. Here, a novel Fe–Co/N-doped carbon/reduced graphene oxide (Fe–Co/NC/rGO) composite with hierarchically porous structure was designed and synthetized by in situ growth of Fe-doped Co-based metal organic frameworks (Co-MOF) on the sheets of porous cocoon-like rGO followed by calcination. The Fe–Co/NC composites are homogeneously distributed on the sheets of porous rGO. The Fe–Co/NC/rGO composite with multiple components (Fe/Co/NC/rGO) causes magnetic loss, dielectric loss, resistance loss, interfacial polarization, and good impedance matching. The hierarchically porous structure of the Fe–Co/NC/rGO enhances the multiple reflections and scattering of microwaves. Compared with the Co/NC and Fe–Co/NC, the hierarchically porous Fe–Co/NC/rGO composite exhibits much better microwave absorption performances due to the rational composition and porous structural design. Its minimum reflection loss (RL
min
) reaches − 43.26 dB at 11.28 GHz with a thickness of 2.5 mm, and the effective absorption frequency (RL ≤ − 10 dB) is up to 9.12 GHz (8.88–18 GHz) with the same thickness of 2.5 mm. Moreover, the widest effective bandwidth of 9.29 GHz occurs at a thickness of 2.63 mm. This work provides a lightweight and broadband microwave absorbing material while offering a new idea to design excellent microwave absorbers with multicomponent and hierarchically porous structures.
Prunus mume is an early spring flower of Rosaceae, which owns high application value in gardens. Being an excellent ornamental trait, the double flower trait has always been one of the important ...breeding goals of plant breeders. However, the key regulatory genes of double flower traits of P. mume are still unclear at present. The floral organs' morphological differences of 20 single and 20 double flower cultivars of P. mume were compared firstly. And it was found that double flower trait of P. mume were often accompanied by petaloid stamen, multiple carpels and an increase in the total number of floral organs. Then, transcriptome sequencing of two representative cultivars P. mume 'Danban Lve' and P. mume 'Xiao Lve' were conducted at 3 Stage of flower bud development with distinct morphological differentiation. 3256 differentially expression genes (DEGs) were detected, and 20 candidate genes for double flower trait of P. mume were screened out including hub genes PmAP1-1 and PmAG-2 based on DEGs function analysis and WGCNA analysis. And it was found that epigenetic and hormone related genes may also play an important role in the process of double flower. This study suggested that the double flower trait of P.mume is more like accumulation origin based on morphological observation. 20 genes and co-expression network related to the formation of double flower P. mume were preliminarily screened through transcriptomics analysis. The results provided a reference for further understanding of the molecular mechanism of double flower trait in P. mume.
