Land reclamation of previously mined regions has been incorporated in the mining process as awareness of environmental protection has grown. In this study, we used the open-pit coal mine Oslomej in ...R. N. Macedonia to demonstrate the activities related to the monitoring process of the study area.
We combined the Google Earth Engine (GEE) computing platform with the Landsat time-series data, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Random Forest (RF) algorithm, and the LandTrendr algorithm to monitor the mining impacts, land reclamation, and the solar farm growth of the coalfield region between 1984 and 2021.
The data from the sequential Landsat archive that was used to construct the spatiotemporal variability of the NDVI over the Oslomej mine site (1984-2021) and the pixel-based trajectories from the LandTrendr algorithm were used to achieve accurate measurements and analysis of vegetation disturbances.
The different land use/land cover (LULC) classes herbaceous, water, mine, bare land, and solar farm in the Oslomej coalfield area were identified, and the effects of LULC changes on the mining environment were discussed. The RF classification algorithm was capable of separating these LULC classes with accuracies exceeding 90 %. We also validated our results using random sample points, field knowledge, imagery, and Google Earth.
Our methodology, which is based on GEE, effectively captured information on mining, reclamation, and solar farm change, providing annual data (maps and change attributes) that can help local planners, policymakers, and environmentalists to better understand environmental influences connected to the ongoing conversion of the mining areas.
Reversal ventilation is one of prevention methods against fire hazard in underground mines, but it is not recommended for the mines where methane is present. The authors introduce the new method of ...reversal and by conducting numerical simulations they prove that it allows to keep methane at the acceptable level during miners escape. However, it requires connection between the subnetworks of the main ventilation fans. It was also shown, that by using the method some escape routes will be shortened. It is possible to apply this method in the mines where the fans and stoppings are fully controlled across the full range of their operating parameters. The findings are important for underground mines, as well as for surface facilities where air control or smoke control is managed by two or more fans.
As relict features of coal mines, carbonaceous spoil, waste and tailing dumps remain susceptible to coal oxidation and thermal decomposition, together with spontaneous combustion. Modern methods for ...monitoring surface thermal signatures regularly include the use of UAV's, equipped with suitably sensitive infrared cameras. Detection of sub-surface thermal anomalism includes Vegetation Index Monitoring and/or the use of in-ground probes. Research across thermally active tailings offers insights into how best apply these two techniques, and increasingly the required scheduling of UAV surveys.

Napredak u pridobivanju ugljena u mnogim je zemljama, posebice u Indiji, suočen s brojnim problemima. Postoje velike emisije plinova, njihove iznenadne eksplozije, požari, prašina, samozapaljenje te ...visoke koncentracije metana. U radu je opisano kako smanjiti ili ukloniti takve probleme, a prikazana je i nova metoda, već primijenjena u češkim rudnicima ugljena, koja je pokazala vrlo dobre rezultate.
