This dissertation takes the slightly unconventional form of an advocacy statement on behalf of the indigenous system of shifting cultivation as practiced by the Iban of Sarawak. It examines their ...traditional system of farming from the perspective of a bioregionalist and presents information which indicates that well-managed shifting cultivation is an appropriate agricultural technology for much of interior Sarawak. An analysis of development trends in Malaysia, from the macro to micro levels synthesizes information concerning the possible benefits as well as the social and environmental costs of such development to Iban shifting cultivators. While the defense of the indigenous system is the strategic goal, the work at the tactical level, seeks to develop three specific areas of study. First, in considering the constraints and possibilities offered by the rainforest environment the work focuses on the skeletal soils which cover much of interior Sarawak. A careful analysis of soil samples, using techniques developed by Uehata and Gillman, revealed the wisdom of the indigenous system of agriculture in working with these soils. Second, a detailed study of Rumah Imba, a longhouse community on Sungai Paku in Seventh Division Sarawak, with visits extending from 1976 to 1984, indicated that the needs of the residents are met through a variety of procurement patterns and that there is stability in spite of the problems which come their way. Third, shifting cultivation areas are viewed as bioregions and new patterns of development are suggested which should be culturally acceptable, ecologically sound, and provide a decent standard of living for the human inhabitants of the region.
