The Present Status and Perspectives of Research in Medieval Church Music in Croatia. The aim of this article is to summarize the results of research in the field of medieval church music in Croatia ...and to point out the possibilites and tasks of further investigation. As the greatest part of Croatia in the Middle Ages was annexed to the Western (Roman) church, the church music of medieval Croatia belongs to the western monophonic Gregorian chant and the forms based on this chant. The sources of this music have so far been only partially investigated. One of the principal problems for the scholar is the lack of modern evidence concerning the manuscripts which are kept in Croatia and abroad. There is no long any doubt about the fact that along the Adriatic coast and in northern Croatia there were several scriptoria in the Middle Ages, and that apart from imported manuscripts the greatest proportion of the codices preserved originated in those scriptoria. Several articles deal with the palaeographical and liturgical problems in single important manuscripts. Albe Vidaković has proved that the sources from the greatest part of Croatia include western types of neumatic writing, i. e. the beneventan neumes in Dalmatia and the so called "German" neumes in the northern parts of the country. In the liturgical field particular attention has been paid to the so-called "Zagreb rite" and a number of studies discuss the local and regional particularities as they are reflected in single sources. Musical studies have already led to the discovery of some melodies without parallel in the European repertoire, but it is necessary to undertake broad comparative studies in order to define the territorial traditions and the specific contribution of Croatia to the medieval music in Europe.
