This book offers a comparative analysis of three versions of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita: namely, the original novel (1955), the script written by the novelist himself and published as Lolita: A ...Screenplay (1974), and Stanley Kubrick's film based on Lolita's storyline (1962). Kubrick's final product oscillates between adaptation and interpretation, as it draws from both Nabokov's novel and script, but also uses the improvisational talents of the cast, eventually rendering the director's firm auteurial hand clearly visible throughout the film. The book analyses how various additions and subtractions made first by Nabokov as a scriptwriter, and later by Kubrick as a movie director, influence the reception of the four main characters: Lolita, Humbert Humbert, Charlotte Haze, and Clare Quilty. The original novel's multilayered web of intertextual references - among them the works of Edgar Allan Poe and the typically Nabokovian critique of Freudian theories - becomes significantly reduced in the script and the film, with Kubrick additionally enriching the film version of the story with cinematic references. While Lolita the novel has been extensively researched and commented upon, and some criticism on the two film versions (Kubrick's 1962 production, and Lyne's 1997 film) is also available, the scope of Lolita: Between Adaptation and Interpretation includes in its analysis the text of Nabokov's original screenplay, which - although ultimately not used by Kubrick - provides fascinating insights into how the writer himself envisioned his own creation rendered in a movie adaptation. Kubrick's work departs significantly from the contents of both the novel and the screenplay, being closer to an auteur's interpretation of the original piece than its adaptation.
On Nabokov, Ayn Rand and the Libertarian Mind not only conjoins two seemingly divergent authors but also takes on the larger picture of libertarian trends and ideologies. These timely topics further ...intermingle with Bell-Villada's own conflicted relationship - personal, cultural, satirical, literary - to the "odd pair" and their ways of thinking. The inclusion of Louis Begley's essay adds yet another dimension to this unique, wide-ranging meditation on art and politics, history and memory.

The purpose of scientific research – identify the problems of providing qualified personnel for agricultural enterprises of the Perm region and suggest ways to solve them. The main research methods ...used were statistical observation, comparative analysis and economic assessment. As a result of the research the problems of providing qualified personnel for agricultural enterprises were considered. It is noted that more than 60 % of Russian enterprises, including agricultural ones, are experiencing a shortage of professional personnel. It is suggested that investments in the development of human resources provoke an increase in labor productivity and ultimately the economic efficiency of enterprises. The article refers to a decrease in the share of employees with professional education in Russian agro-industrial enterprises. The analysis of the number of urban and rural population of the Perm region is carried out. The composition of the rural population by main age groups was studied. It is concluded that rural settlements are losing their working population, and agro-industrial enterprises in the absence of a surge of young professional staff face the problem of aging personnel. The analysis of the birth rate and mortality of the population of the Perm region, including in cities and rural settlements, was carried out. It is assumed that a significant decrease in the birth rate of the population is a consequence of the difficult socio-economic situation in the Perm region. The analysis of the reasons leading to the outflow of rural population to the cities of the region and beyond is also carried out. The Federal target program for rural development aimed at improving the housing conditions of agricultural workers, building schools and pre-school educational institutions, putting into operation paramedic and midwifery centers, building sports facilities and leisure centers, and developing rural infrastructure is presented as measures to address the identified problems. It is assumed that the most significant factors that can keep young professional staff in agro-industrial enterprises are their wages and housing conditions. It is concluded that to attract young people to agricultural production, it is necessary to provide employees of agro-industrial enterprises with their own housing and raise their wages to the level of the average economy of the region. The scientific novelty of the research consists in a set of measures proposed by the authors to solve the personnel problem of agro-industrial enterprises.
At the outbreak of the Second World War Vladimir Nabokov stood on the brink of losing everything all over again. The reputation he had built as the pre-eminent Russian novelist in exile was ...imperilled. In Nabokov and his Books, Duncan White shows how Nabokov went to America and not only reinvented himself as an American writer but also used the success of Lolita to rescue those Russian books that had been threatened by obscurity. Using previously unpublished and neglected material, White tells the story of Nabokov the professional writer and how he sought to balance his late modernist aesthetics with the demands of a booming American literary marketplace during the Cold War era. As Nabokov’s reputation grew so he took greater and greater control of how his books were produced, making the material form of the book—including forewords, blurbs, covers—part of the novel. In his later novels, including Pale Fire, Ada, and Transparent Things, the idea of the celebrity novelist losing control of his work became the subject of the novels themselves. These plots were replicated in Nabokov’s own biography as he discovered his inability to control the forces the market success of Lolita had unleashed. With new insights into Nabokov’s life and work, this book reconceptualizes the way we think about one of the most important and influential novelists of the twentieth century.

Appealing to a wide community of literary scholars this timely companion to Nabokov's writing offers new insights and approaches to one of the most important, and yet most elusive writers of modern literature.
